When You Feel Depressed, What Cheers You Up?

For me, it's the arts: Music/singing/dancing, acting, comedy, writing/reading, etc. What about you?

EDIT: And the sound clip I have installed for EVERY sound on my computer; James Marsters saying, "Hello, cutie." ;) :fluffle: :p

Food, either good salty stuff like 'tater chips, or sugary, candy or chocholate...that just melts my sorrows away

Also, anytime i talk with my GF, it does the trick too

Sometimes, I just wanna go where everybody knows my name. And they're always glad I came.

Unfortunately, said place does not exist, so I settle for hitting on young ladies in clubs. And failing, so I really settle for rejection, as long as copious supplies of beer and a few friends are present.

you, sir, have gotten a point for that.

What I do when I feel depressed is precisely squat. It's ineffective, but it dominates whatever I'm doing at any one time, so I just work it through my system ASAP. I have no way of dealing with depression. Might as well just get it over with.

I love to go practice martial arts with friends when i'm depressed. It really helps when I have to concentrate on the technique alone rather than have a load of thoughts swirling around in my head

Oh, yeah. I know what you mean. I used to take karate class. I wasn't very good at it, but it helped me a lot with some of the drama/trauma in my early years.

Does it really? I was thinking about taking up martial arts to help me focus and teach self-discipline, but I don't know anyone who practices it... So I don't have any first-hand info, and I'm kinda reluctant to just barge in and have a go at it.

Even if you just start off by learning a few katas (forms) and then run through them over and over building up the speed as you go. Thats always a good start. My favourite is a bokken kata i was taught a few years ago. Although i wouldnt recommend weapons kata straight away

Say, ChuChullain... You Irish? Your name kinda sounds like the hero from that old folk tale, can't seem to remember his name though... The one that went on a pilgrimage of sorts, or something... Studied it once for Medieval Literature... Anyways, nevermind, it's late where I'm at, so that makes the mind trolley of ;)

Martial Arts are great for focus and discipline. I practice Tae Kwon Do myself, but any MA will be good for you. If you do take it up, try to find a serious instructor, not some random guy who can get you a black belt in a year. It's better to do everything slowly and correctly rather than quickly and in a rush.

Agreed with the martial arts.

The best place i know where i can do them was a hilltop near my home, which is surrounded by trees so no one can see you, i used to go there occasionally in the summer, i can have a view of the cheshire plain and walk through my german longsword stances and forms.

Either that or simple meditation, just clear my mind and relax, focus.

The two together work really well.

Longswords aren't too heavy in fact, inch for inch they weigh less than a proper katana (between 2 to 4 lbs). Of course it all depends on balance points etc, but there we go :D

If you want more info look at www.swordforum.com there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there.

Yeah, I know that one. It's like, if the songwriter was actually feeling that at the time of writing the lyrics, then there must have been a point at which someone was feeling lower than me. Alternately, sometimes I just dentify with the singer and wallow in self-pity and excess beer.

I usually set up a playlist of songs in Winamp. Just picking songs usually helps somewhat. Then I listen to them for some time, skipping songs that don't fit.

Agreed. If the song is something I can relate to, then the author of it must have gone through it at some point, meaning that I'm not alone in having those feelings.

If I can't find a song that can fully match my emotions, I usually play video games, and eat ice cream. :p

There was that guy who built a bicycle that he could type on his computer while he was riding, with a small display. The 'keyboard' was integrated into the handlebars so he wouldn't have to move his hands off the controls. It was for some crazy cross the US kinda thing, a while ago. I don't have enough to go on to make a google search not a pain in the ass. But with a bike like that you could indeed do all three.

MXC does, Monty Python does, one or another of my 80's compilation discs does, getting on here and arguing with a few of the other posters sometimes is fun .... sometimes just getting out and enjoying the vast beauty of my state is enough to do it. Sometimes it's just a matter of getting away from myself and/or my immediate surroundings.

It's on Spike TV (channel 32 on Time Warner Cable). It's a Japanese-produced game show where contestants are forced to go through obstacle courses and perform outrageous stunts. It's gloriously excellent.

Takeshis castle. That's also amusing. Does MXC have rather lax safety rules? There's been multiple broken ribs, legs, teeth knocked out (into the several thousand by now) in Takeshis castle.

if you like MXC, it's a fairly safe bet that you'd be amused by Takeshis castle.

EDIT the Second: And, it seems, I'm adding info you already added in another post...so RIF to me...

They don't translate what is being said, rather write new words to put over it as if thats whats being said. So they give the contestants joke names and set up joke themes.

The only time that it has struck me as really funny is when they did it in Orlando with American college students but still dubbed it giving the contestants joke names and joke teams and making them say ridiculous things. I laughed my ass off all the way through that episode.

You live in Cheshire? Hardcore, neighbour! Or is it just a really big hill? :p

I just think rationally about whatever's depressing me. If I can fix it, I do, and if I can't I see no reason to wallow in misery, and just get on with my life. Although sometimes I enjoy being sad....it can be a great source of inspiration. And without the bitter, the sweet wouldn't taste so good.
