Any Magic players around?
Yes, I admit that I play Magic and no I do not also dress up like a wizard and run around the woods throwing balls at "trolls" and screaming "FIREBALL! FIREBALL!"
Now, I live in Japan and so am a bit behind the times so only recently I bought some new boosters. And I am disappointed to say the least. What the hell happened to the card design? Artifacts now look like white cards, the pictures are bigger and the colors barely outline the edges. The art sucks, plain and simple, sucks.
I looks like the designers of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh hijacked the damn company.

Yeah, 8th edition sucks cock. They're going for the Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh crowd. Every respectable person I know refuses to use 8th edition.
That being said, I haven't played Magic in a year or two, and I'm actually looking to sell most of my cards.

Oh God, NO!!! I play magic though, and yes and the art is truly sucky on the new cards. I miss the old cards with elaborate pictures. There is no shame in magic, because I play it too..... and occasionally run around in the woods chasing a pretend cave troll and casting spells on it- BUT ONLY SOMETIMES, I SWEAR! Anyways the 8th edition sucks, they need to fire those artists!
Yeah, I seperated the 8ths that I bought. They are in a speciall pile, down in a corner of the box. To be looked upon with scorn and shame. Maybe they will be useful in classic duels. . ."Hey, that's odd, everytime you ante it is one of those 8th edition cards." . . ."Yeah, funny that. Any way, I only have one land so. . ."

It's really too bad about the artwork, because I was wicked excited when I'd heard that the first expansion block would be artifacts. I wanted to make an artifact o' doom deck. But, then I saw the cards, and weeped.

I love artifacts! I made a deck with no creatures. It was a few land, tons of mana producing artifacts and black cards killers, red damage givers, white protections and green life givers. It looked so great! It never won a single game! oh well, back to the drawing board.

I used to be a regular player, but since all myfriends went off to uni I've got sorely out of practice. I'm going to the Saviours prerelease later this month; anyone got any tips for strategies within the Kamigawa block?
I doubt you can find any Orlando Magic players on this board :p
But seriously, I've always wanted to play but I keep forgetting to buy the cards!

It is easy to forget things. It is a pretty fun game, the endless possibilities of combinations make it very challenging. I am truely a mediocre player but it is still very fun.

I had a pretty kickass artifact that just let me sit back and draw life from it (something like tap one land for a life). Of course, I was misusing it, but that didn't stop me from having fun until someone pointed out that I was, in effect, cheating them.

What card game is it comparable to? I have no clue what the rules or how to play in the slightest.

Hard to say, as it's probably the oldest successful CCG ever. Most games are similar to IT.
Battletech CCG is similar.

The only card games I've ever played are Star Trek: The Collectible Card Game and Poke'mon(don't ask). Is it anything like those? Or rather are they anything like Magic?

That is really difficult to answer. What have you played? It is nothing like any card game you would play with a 52 card deck. Each player has 20 life and they play cards in sequence in an attempt to reduce everyone else's life to 0 while having at least one life left.
You use creatures, spells and enchanments to do this. These are paid for with land cards or certain other mana producing cards. Get yourself a starter pack, they are green and big and have two small decks and some playing pieces. A simplified rule book. It can intro you to the game and tell you if you would be interested or not. I love it!

Yeah, I used to have a beautiful deck that relied on green insects that were immune to spells or abilities. I would use Wrath of God, wipe out the opposition and they would be immune. Then somebody pointed out to me that they in fact were not immune and the deck collapsed. Before that it had a perfect record and I was seriously thinking of going to one of the big tournaments.

Ah, you do have some experience then. Pokemon, my mother has collected every Pokemon card both Japanese and English. She has books and books of them and is known as The Pokemon Lady by many children in the town. All the cardshop guys know her.

I have quite a few myself, I haven't played in YEARS though. I love my Star Trek card games though *hugs my cards*
If you guys are seriously disappointed in the quality of the work on 8th edition, contact WotC. Tell them. My husband used to work for them, and stopped getting contracts a couple of years ago when they "decided to take the art in a new direction." The new direction seemed to be "drawn by rabid chimpanzees." If you like the "old school" look, let them know. Maybe it'd get back some of the good artists.

I have an artifact deck I like. Aside from artifacts, it only has nonbasic lands that can't produce colored mana. I need to adjust it, though. It has far too many cards that cost 4 or 6 mana, and barely any at all that cost 1, 2, or 3.

Trekkie!! Trekkie!! *points finger and skips in a circle*
sorry I had to. I like Trek to but I usually hide my like. Played a great miniatures Trek campaign once with my miniatures club back home. They ahd a great great house rule for the Feds, called The Kirk Manuever. Once per game, if the Enterprise was present in the battle, the Feds could state one event they wanted to happen, it could be anything reasonable like, all opposing ships shields turn off for the rest of the game, or their two biggest ships explode. Then they would roll a die and if they got a 6 it worked. It made the game pretty funny when it happened which was a couple of times.
Kirk scores!!

here here, the old art was usually beautiful! It seemed to have a depth to it and a detail lacking in these new, drawn for kids cards. I swear I thought Mickey Mouse would be on the next card I looked at.

Damn straight I'm a Trekkie! I tell everybody that when I first meet them so if they act all assholey about it I just say "fuck you" and they get to miss out on the great person that I am :D . Kirk is THE man. What other captain do you know who kicked GODS(yes he really did do this) ass!?!? None.

Perhaps Barbie? The change happened 1 year and 1 day after Hasbro did the buy-out. Why? Merger contract stated that Hasbro couldn't make any staffing changes for the first year.

There was an organized mailing campaign by players upset with the new artwork. Basically, the response from WotC was, "Too bad; we don't care."
As a personal law, I don't use any cards above 7th edition because they suck so much.
On another note...I have the most kick-ass angel/enchantment/wall deck you would ever have the pleasure of losing to.

Just, just, seems so wrong it cannot be put into words. I really someday want to meet the assholes at these companies who make these choices. I can just imagine. It is some forty year old guy who has never played in his life who thinks to himself. . .him this is some kids game and kids like colorful pretty pictures. Then he looks at the art and thinks, My god, this isn't fluffy colorful and cute, it has got to change!!
I would enjoy hurting him very much. Sorry, I am angry.

Time to stop buying new edition cards and avoid all company sponsored events.

aaaaaaah, Legacy Weapon. :) My favorite card is Worship.
I once made a deck with just Mana and a two dozen 1/1 dwarves and goblin with no abilities.
It didn't fare to well.
I used to play Standard but gave up after Onslaught block. Pretty much everything I liked died out after invasion block and the killing off of the old world to replace it with Otaria, and then Mirrodin, and then Kamigawa. Combine this with the terrible new card design and the lack of continuity and I can see why I went to Extended.
Urza Block, Masques Block, and Invasion are mostly what I use, and sometimes go type 1 to use my favorite set, Mirage.

You have no idea how annoying that is. I was playing a Fires deck, got my opponent down to 1 in four turns, and then he dropped a Worship.
Unfortunately, I didn't side in Hull Breaches, so I died from exhausting my library.

I love winning by library death!! Love it!! It makes my fellow player seeth and curse my name but I can't resist a good victory by library death. I am evil, I know.

Yep, that was in it. I liked it in my defensive white deck as a shutdown for the Dragon Legends in invasion.
I admit, I was also sucked in to the Rebel decks at the time. ($40 Lin Sivvi!?)

Boo! Decking is so lame.
What're even worse are the pre-banning Tolarian Academy decks. I played against one and lost turn three; it took half an hour for his turn to end and kill me.
I hope that doesn't mean a Counter-Millstone deck....
heh heh, yep. I have a green/white deck. Wurms and spiders for creatures with one elf. Green cards to bring back from the graveyard, two Tormuds Crypt (spl?) to reshuffle my graveyard into my library. A couple other cards to bring back all creatures from the graveyard. A couple of Emerald Medallions to decrease creatures cost and a Millstone. It works quite nicely. I hope I remembered the card names right.
And now I have to go to work. See ya all later.

And 8th Edition annoys me greatly.

I play Magic almost obsessively. I completely agree with you all: the new format sucks serious ass. When Eighth Edition and Mirroden came out I started a ban in protest of the new format. I think at one point I had about 7 people. Then it crashed. Since I play professionally, I had no choice and had to play with the new sets. Kamigawa is fine, but the Mirroden block sucked. However, there was one good aspect to 8th ed.; you could use old cards. Fortunately, if you had the older version of the card then in 8th, then you could use the older card instead in a tournament. Which was great, it meant I could bring my old 4th ed. Birds of Paradise to tournaments. I hope they change the format back. They have the opportunity coming up: Ninth Edition is coming out this summer, along with a new block called Ravinca.
Too bad Otaria and Dominaria are gone. I liked them. They just had to blow themselves to hell, didn't they? Each block is set on a different land in a different universe. (Mirroden, Kamigawa, Ravinca, ect...)

I liked Dominaria the best, but Kamigawa is decent, and could be pretty good if they build on it (which it appears they aren't). The Japanese theme is different, like Mirage was, and so I like it.
When you say professional, do you mean the Pro Tour?

I got into magic about 2 or 3 years ago when my friend showed me the game. I just started really getting into it last year when i bought my own deck and boosters. I have a modified sky slam deck with some boosters and some cards i got from a friend who is obseesed with Magic.

I agree, Dominaria was cool. The idea behind Kamigawa is also cool, but the reality of it could be better.
I wish I was on the Pro Tour. I try occassionally to win tournaments. I consider myself an Amataur Proffessional. Sounds way cooler than what it actually is. I recently won a Tournament with a Green/black deck that grants me a seat in the championship in Philidelphia. I wonder how I'm gonna get there, I live in Texas... and I don't have much money. Yeah, I play. I used to have an enormous collection and then I sold everything except my decks for money and weed. About all I've got left at present is the best blue counter/control deck I've ever seen. All I have for creatures is 4 palinchrons, 4 [!]Vesuvian Dopplegangers, 4 Clones, and maybe one or two little ones that I can't remember. Everything else is counters and land pretty much; there's an enchantment or two in there.
I didn't build it for this, but it plays really well teamed with a red deck, but only if they have a mana flare. If a mana flare is on the board and I have a palinchron [or 12 :p] and 4 untapped lands, I've got infinite mana on my turn. This, coupled with an Equilibrium [pay one colorless when you cast a creature to return target creature to its owners hand] means all your creatures go back to your hand, and usually it means you die too. I love my blue deck.
Yeah, I used to be really into magic, though I was never terribly good, as I never spent any money on it, and only had Urza's Saga, Portal, Portal II and Portuguese cards, excepting a few i bought to make an elf deck.
