Besides embarrassing hotel managers and leaving guests itchy and squeamish, bed bugs can trigger lawsuits.

Even upscale hotels are not immune to litigation
I would wager that it's the upscale hotels that are most likely to be hit with a lawsuit, as they're the ones most likely to offer a big fat out-of-court settlement to stop it going public.
Nice if you are of little morals and looking for a quick easy buck.
'Ouch! I've been bitten! Oh, no! This is terrible! I can't face going to work with a tiny bite mark on my back! In fact I'm so upset, I don't think I'll ever be able to sleep in a hotel again - and I'm a travelling salesman. Oh no! My life is ruined! The hotel had best give lots of money to comfort me in my hardship and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder."

Ugh...........splendid. Right as I'm about to stay in hotels all across the country. God I hate bugs. Maybe we should just sleep in the mini-van. :(
