The Party of Whatever Works!

Since everyone ( well, a few ) is starting a new "political party," I thought I'd give my own ideas about one.
The Party of Whatever Works will use statistics and intensive data analysis to determine, not only what people truly want, but what they obviously need in terms of freedom of action, food, clothing, shelter, water, power generation, clean environment, health care, safety, etc.
After the list of public needs is completed by our "issues teams" of scientific advisors, statisticians and accountants, it will be submitted to every media outlet across the country for two months of public debate. Every community will be encouraged to hold a town meeting to discuss the list. Any areas of obvious disagreement will be resubmitted to the issues teams for reassessment, then to the various state legislators and congress for one month of debate, after which they will be put in permanent session with no breaks until a legislative program is complete and ready for the President's signature.
All of this will be paid for by a streamlining of the tax code: no deductions, no exemptions, every dollar of income from whatever source is subject to taxation, and every citizen will pay the same percentage of their total income, regardless.
Lawyers will be prohibited from seeking public office!

Well, you had me up till flat-tax ;) But hey, we all make compramises in life.
Actually, its probably because I dispise political parties in general. I personally find them no better than a street gang. Just a crowd of people who band together to cover their personal flaws and weakness and dominate those not part of their group.

That is how an ideal government should work. I think it would take a lot of flak for 'flip-flopping' in real life, though.

LOL! Well, hate 'em or love 'em, they're a fact of life and can be as easily ignored as a turd in a swimmingpool. Any form of government which doesn't take them into account is doomed.
BTW ... what's wrong with the tax system I proposed? Perhaps you should read it again? :)

Just have to make sure everyone is on board before the legislation is drafted. If people have an opportunity to comment and "buy in" to the process, they have no leg to stand on if they decide later on they don't like the result. :)
Eutrusca, I would normally put a link to your party from the original thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=418608), but it's been locked so I can't, sorry. :(

I'm thinking about getting elected in the first place...I can't really picture a successful party whose platform is "we'll decide what everyone wants once we get into power".
Also, you'd have to watch out for biased issues teams. It would be tempting for people to bias questionnaires towards their own viewpoint.

I love your party! Reaserch into what people really need and want, instead of just ideology. My only problem is the flat tax preposal. Mebbe we should leave that to the issues teams and town meetings, as well.

They don't want the party threads to multiply, I think.

Sounds like a good party, but I'm not convinced the flat tax will work out well.

Government should not be in the business of determining needs, even if they do it fairly.

Well, the Parliamental procedure has been passed, and the floor is open for bills to be presented.
I figure the PM's of our illustrious party ought to discuss what issues, if any, the party might like to bring up in Parliament.
It might be prudent to have such discussions in the POWW forum.
Just passing the word along. :)

That's nice. I think perhaps you're looking for another party thread. This party focuses on solutions to issues.
I'm not sure if there's an empty-insult elitist party, but you're welcome to look for one. :)

There are a few problems that I can see with this.
1) The flat tax. Been mentioned before.
2) Corrupt politicians. Been mentioned before.
3) Information available. While I wholly support the idea of direct democracy, it can only work if people are properly informed. How would you ensure that only correct information is disseminated?

Funny that you claim to be pragmatic, yet you want a flat tax. History shows that a progressive tax rate is the most practical.
You say that you use statistics and such to determine policy, rather than ideology or emotion. Yet you use your arbitrary, irrational dislike for lawyers influence you!

WTF? Been grave-digging again? This thread is as old as the hills, and the Party itself is defunct. Give it a rest. :p
