Today is the infamous Friday the 13th!

Be careful out there today! You never know when you might step on a crack and give your mother acute scoliosis!

Yeah, I almost forgot.

And, nothing's happened so far, and it's late at night, so I should be safe.

In NYC on Thursday the 12th, a 150-yard section of a retaining wall collapsed, sending a landslide of dirt, rocks and trees tumbling onto the Henry Hudson Parkway, which is now closed northbound.

Then a railroad bridge over which both NJ Transit and Amtrak travel in order to get to and from the city caught fire.

;) I think today will be trouble free -- except for commuters into Manhattan.

This morning, abandoning all common sense I thought I had I downloaded and installed an application of which I knew pretty much nothing about. The subsequent few hours I've spent cleaning my hard drive of adware and viruses that came with it.

Normally I'd curse my stupidity, but this is a perfect day to just blame the date.

13 is a lucky number to the Chinese (8 is even luckier). 14 is the number they fear. So Friday the 13th is no biggy here.

FYI:
8 in Cantonese sounds similar to 'wealth', or 'money', which is why nearly everything for sale here costs $8 or $88 or $888 etc etc.
13 in Cantonese sounds similar to 'must live'
14 in Cantonese sounds similar to 'must die'. So at Weddings, there are always 8 or 13 seats at a table and never 14. 23 is also lucky, but I can't remember what the '2' sounds like in Cantonese. Maybe 'long life'.

Today, I overslept until 9:30, leading to my being invited to a very small conference (just my boss and me) where he did most of the talking, and I did most of the nodding and apologizing.

So I guess there's a point to superstition. O_o

Is 4 an unlucky number in China? Or did I mix that up with Japan?

I thought I was sick XD

Well, me too thinks it's pretty funny when people get their pants wet just because it's Friday the 13th. What's so special about it anyways? Why don't we declare Monday the 2th to be a lucky day? Or actually, let's say that every day exept Sunday the 32th is a lucky day.

Oh well, my popcorn pin DID collapse today, but then again, we got from school at 1330 (wow, almost 1337) instead of the normal 1500. Or we were supposed to get out 1330, but we got around 1315. And of course, I had to wait 30 mins for the goddamn bus.

I think Friday the 13th is thought of as unlucky to our culture because on a Friday Jesus sat down to the last supper of twelve deciples and one leader making a total of thirteen on a Friday. Thirteen has been unlucky since.

No, 4 is unlucky in China. It sounds similar to 'die', whereas 10 sounds similar to 'must'. That's why I said in my post 14 sounds like 'must die'.
I think it might be the same in Japan as well. Quite a few characters are the same, and pronounciation of simple words are likewise similar. Best ask the NS'er who lives in Japan - can't remember his name, but I know he lives in Osaka.

You sure this wasn't meant for the 'weird names' thread?

Or are you just trying to win 'most random post-er' award off TIN?

I don't live in Japan, but I can tell you that "4" in Japanese is "Shi" which is also the word for death. it's definitely considered unlucky.

Unless Dan Brown has been talking bull in his book, the original Friday the Thirteenth was in October some time during the thirteenth/fourteenth century, when apparently the then pope excommunicated all the Templar knights. Or something.

Well there we go - I was right about the Chinese and Japanese languages! "shi' is exactly how you pronounce 4 in Chinese as well, and 'shi' also means 'die' or 'death'. Depending on how you say it (rising or lowering the intonation).
That makes me happy - that I got something right!

Maybe this is further proof that Friday 13th is unlucky...

Yep, 4 is unlucky here, and for the same reason.

Most Japanese characters have a "native" reading (kun) and a Chinese "reading" (on). The on readings approximate the Chinese pronunciation (in different dialects, resulting in various readings) as best as can be in Japanese.

Today I forgot to put the marmite in my sandwiches, cut myself, stained my jeans with blood, broke a glass pipette, and tried to open a toxic waste bin thinking it was an ice box.

My friend Becky accidently squirted me, accidently squirted herself in the face (with disposable pipettes) and tried to walk into the mens loos (wrong floor, dearie.)

The curse of friday 13th or two accident prone, forgetful individuals? (Our frog dissection and experimentation did go rather well though.)

The first unlucky Friday the 13th resulted from a computer glitch that accidentally deleted 50,000 people, sometimes known as the Battle of Gallipoli. (And don't say that didn't happen on Friday the 13th, because it was Friday the 13th on Callisto.) Today, by an odd coincidence, is Friday the 13th both on Earth and in Callisto. Therefore, feel certain that something very unlucky is going to happen today. I planned to end the world today, but unfortunately I had to put it off till Monday. :(
