Computer Problems..

Ok. So for the past several months I've had numerous computer problems. For the past 6 months, my computer has been amazingly slow and amazingly loud. When I would do a ctrl + alt + del, it would show that the CPU usage was at 100%.. .constantly.

Then, it wouldn't let me format my hard drive. Nor move files from one point to another. Nor would it let me install anything, as Windows Installer was absolutely fubared. Hell, I had to go to ctrl + alt + del and change the Priority to High or Realtime just to get any applications like FireFox to work!

I finally ended up switching over to Linux and having the anaconda partition manager delete my windows partition, and I"m just going to do a clean install. But holy hell... I had my network admin buddy here with me, and he was trying to help me figure out a way to port some of my files over to his laptop.. but nothing would work.. and when he saw the CPU usage he bought damn near had a heart attack, he sat there and watched it stay at 100% unwavering for about 10 minutes.. and he said that he has NEVER seen anything like that before.

Then, his laptop started fucking up (the virus got over I guess?) I couldn't move his icons, nor would the internet work anymore. So he did a system restore and said "Fuck your computer, I'll just buy you a new hard drive!!!" lol. He's not going to though, because hes sleeping now and doesn't know that I've already gotten rid of the Windows menace.

I've never had this problem with Linux, nor do I ever expect to.

Linux is the shit. Go Linus Torvalds!

It was a virus. Or many viruses.

Stuff like that usually causes problems. Do Ctrl Alt Delete and check whether or not any unusual processes are running.

Or boot into safe mode and start cleaning out all that crap.

I use windows xp and linux mandrake 10.
I am glad that I have linux because when I installed a virus scanner it stopped my computer from booting up and linux saved my files so I could format the windows partition.
though apart from that I have not had any issues with my windows xp, but I don't go to porn sites or allow any virus or other scumware (spyware, adware and the rest) to be installed.
If you use windows just keep your antivirus updated, get a firewall and use something like adaware to keep things clean.

It was a virus, or many viruses, that managed to modify my SVCHOST.EXE - because that was taking up ALL of my CPU. Not even safe mode changed that.

Viruses? Blasphemy! It's demonic possession of the CPU! :P

Get rid of the computer quickly, before it eats you and your loved ones!

My CPU usage regularly hits 100% for periods of a minute or more, and sometimes for up to 10 like you said. I just keep ending processes in order of memory usage until it stops, usually....or just reboot. Complaining that M$ware sucks is like complaining that the moon is too far away ^_~

Using linux solves most problems with software.

Plus you're not lining the pockets of Bill Gates, with his highly dubious record.

Well, see the thing is, my computer was ALWAYS running at 100% CPU usage... not just for 10 minutes, but for 24 + hours at a time.

I just finished formatting. I have linux.

Seen this before ... what we did was a format while running a harddrive hash util like autoclave

It was a viruii that got itself into the boot sector and stayed through a format... but was fine after we hashed the drive and reinstalled

Well, right now my CPU usage spikes between 10% and 70% (I did a clean reinstal of Windows).

Now I just need to find a good anti virus program.. that is free.

Yup. Run antivirus scans, and defrag. That should clean up the problem, most of the time.

If you want the best free scan on the market get sysclean by trendmicro

The free scan is the most powerfull util I have ever used (the problem is the scan is not "full featured" for free meaning no active checking and no scheduled scans but it is one of the most amazing scans I have ever used
