Post-Chernobyl Pictures

I have been searching with no avail for pictures of deformities and plants, animals and people, due to the Chernobyl nuclear powerplant disaster. I need this for a project. Does anyone know of such links? I am an engineering student working on a project related to human factors resulting in engineering failures. I just need to present a few pictures to emphasize the sheer scale of Chernobyl as a GAFU (God Almighty f*ckup).

C'mon! Roll in the freak show!

I don't think you'll get too many new pictures as it was so radioactive all they could do was dump tonnes of cement on top of it.

Apparently, I found more pictures of mutated children in Altavista than with Google. The world's most popular search engine only gave pictures of sealed reactor, and some examples of radiological spread.

There is actually suprisingly little mutation in the species around Chernobyl. (No extra ears or anything like that)
The biggest problem is leukaemia and cancers from impure water.

A couple of years ago I went to Chernobyl, inside the exclusion zone where the radiation is still very high - highest on earth I think.

There were no animal mutations to see (though that's not to say there weren't internal problems, cancer etc). In fact the animal population was thriving because there were no humans alowed in the zone. There were wild boar. The air was full of birds.
The plant mutation was small - for example unusual leaf growth, extra leaves on clusters - nothing that an untrained eye would have picked out.

Lots of smashed up tanks and helicopters though.

There was severe mutation amongst the species (usually upon closer inspection), with cleft lips and missing eyes, plants had asymmetrical leaves. Although the human exodus from the area has left it as a strange 'radiological reserve' with an abundance of traditional wildlife (e.g. bears, boars and wolves), it is suspected they were born with cancer.

Does nobody else find the idea of a radioactive nature reserve sound really fascinating? No? That'd just be me then. But seriously they have voles in the exclusion zone that are genetically more different from other voles than mice are to rats and albino swallows and all sorts. http://www.guardian.co.uk/saturday_review/story/0,3605,257708,00.html

C'mon! Roll in the freak show!I really hope that was a honest slip up on your part, and you don't always sound like such a callous bastard. Because when you start to talk about victims of the worst civilian nuclear disaster in human history, their children, and their childrens children in a cycle for the next just who knows how many generations, you're the abhorent thing on show then, get it ?

If you're really doing a project, I hope you've covered the horrific thyroid cancer rates they have now, especially in teen-agers, of all people. If you're lucky, you'll have it found early on, and keep your vocal-cords. If you're not, you may not keep your vocal-cords at all. If of course it is a benign one in the first place. Or the " Chernobyl Heart " syndrome, that is killing more children ( And I mean - children - here ) every year because they can't get the life-saving surgery for it. Because the medi-patch thinger to be placed into their heart, plus operating time + materials, cost several hundred / thousand US dollars each operation, which can be more then the yearly wage of the average " nuclear " family there, with both parents working. If they can get work, of course. Now and again American doctors and surgical teams volunteer to fly over and preform the surgery, but they can only just about put a small dint in the over-all figure of those suffering from the condition.

I wonder if you'll be able to find the pictures that they wouldn't even show on the late-night aired documentaries made in the past 5 years, one of which won a rather important award, I think ... of kids so badly messed up by birth defects they wouldn't be shown on camera when they visited one of the few special hospitals operating for their care. And if you've found the picture of the toddler living with their brain out-side and on the back of their skull ? That is just a really weak taster of what you can see, for you, I'm so very sad to say. Or maybe you'll see it mentioned that those with mental defects ( Common thing, you know. ) end up being eventually sent to sanitoriums with dangerous / criminal patients, often quite un-supervised, when they're older and it is " legal " if not ethical, to do so. not that the doctors get all that much of a choice. If they do live that long, of course. Quite a lot of " of course "'s to fill to get that far.

Still, enjoy your " freak show ".

If you are serious about Chernobyl, go to this link:

the empty land (http://kiddofspeed.com/chapter1.html)

She doesn't have all of her photos up, or I'd post one in particular. One in particular, but they all stagger you, and wrap your mind around what happened, and the silent subtle aftermath the way little else can. The last one in chapter 27 especially. Prometheus indeed

What happened to the people and the land around about - they are NOT freaks and never ever should be called such.

That you Sino refer to those people in such a way speaks very poorly for you and makes me very disinclined to have any respect for you.

I don't mind the occassional Jew or Black joke, I even enjoy telling them. That doesn't mean that I'm a racist, as these jokes are based on exaggerated stereotypes.

Yesterday I saw this billboard in the street, it had the picture of a very skinny dark girl, struggling to carry a metal bucket of water. The caption reads "Suwala has to walk 9km a day for water. Please donate to World Vision."

I kept on driving, the vivid image of that poster fresh in my mind. Suddenly a thought came into mind. "I think she should move!"

The world needs starving, improverished people so that the population can be kept down efficiently. If they can't help to sort themselves out (unlike the Chinese), then they're forever screwed.

CG -haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I intend to though, for if it is half as powerful as the Chrenobyl shoots it will be awesome. I wish she had all the pictures up. I first found a couple of years ago when she first put them on the web. The set up was rather disorganized, and the captions were just a line or two for each picture but some of them reached out and compelled as nothing else could. To see a place where the bank clock didn't tell the time, but the rads...to see from a high balcony, a city that looked like the people had just stepped away for a moment, but would be back...and know that they not only never would, but NEVER could... and to think of the glowing, the shining radioactive cloud that the people had such a fine view of...

Can you call yourself human and NOT be touched by that?

There's nothing in the world so serious you can't laugh at it.

Edit: for instance, this quote from the KIDDofSPEED site, where a girl takes a motorcycle ride through the exclusion zone:

"It was quite boring to participate in an election with one candidate from one party, so the turnout was very low. That is, until the local officials hit upon the idea of offering free drinks in return for a vote. This inspired the electorate to become very interested in politics. The door on the right is free drink room and door on left is the election room. I don't know if the authorities came up with idea of making the day after the elections a holiday so the voters had time to sober up before returning to work. Old man who told me this story could not recall."
