Just got my wisdom teeth out
About three and a half hours ago I got my wisdom teeth removed. I really didn't think it was all that bad. But does anyone know when the swelling will go down or when I can feel my tongue again? It's really hard to eat without spilling all over myself because I can't tell whether or not the food is in my mouth.

Depends if you get an infection or not. A friend of mine got her tooths removed befor christmas and couldn't eat anything for the whole week-end, and then she got an infection, so it took 3-4 weeks before her pain went away.

I had my wisdom teeth removed in mid-december last winter, and the swelling lasted for about a week, and the pain was easily handled by the painkillers.

I've had four wisdom teeth removed, but in all cases I was mostly recovered by the first night. My drugged face did prove to be a source of amusement for my friends. I don't think I ever took any painkillers after leaving the dentist. I did take something to prevent infection though.

:D Depending on the job your dentist did wait until the anesthesia wears off before saying "I really didn't think it was all that bad." Each person has a different reaction depending on whether the teeth were impacted or not.
Buy the way you may find yourself wanting those pain killers any time now... :D

Excellent advice. And not just when dealing with dentistry. *nod*
My mom made me take a painkiller when I was too doped up to say no. That was the only one I took.
I did have antibiotics
I got my wisdom teeth out on a thursday morning and I was back in school the following monday and didn't miss band, so I must have been well enough to play the flute by the next thursday at the latest.

If your wisdom teeth were so wise they'd have known they were going to be removed and decided to grow(develope) properly...unless the rumors about the tooth-fairy's short skirt are true then the teeth truely are wise

Well, I've never had my wisdom teeth pulled, but I'd say use mouth wash to help prevent infection. (this may be painful, but it works, I had a really bad cut in my mouth once)

I pulled one of my wisdom teeth myself with a pair of needle nose vice grip pliers. 1/2 Peroxide,1/2 water rinses help to keep it clean.

Don't believe your dentist if he says your wisdom teeth have to come out unless they are causing you pain. All four of my wisdom teeth are impacted under the gums, but they have never caused me any problems.

The gross part is the bone chips you'll be spitting out for about a week.
The numbness depends on whether he hit a nerve or not, too. There is an area the size of a pencil eraser on my left side of my lip that was totally anesthetized for weeks... and still has only about 95% feeling back. (Feels a little like when your foot is asleep.)
Then again, I had a monster abscess and they had to open my gum from molars to canines. ;)
