A judge in Washington might not let you!

AP) A judge has refused to grant a divorce to a pregnant woman trying to leave her husband two years after he was jailed for beating her, ruling instead that she must wait until the child is born.

Shawnna Hughes' husband was convicted of abuse in 2002. She separated from him after the attack and filed for divorce last April. She later became pregnant by another man and is due in March.

Her husband, Carlos, never contested the divorce, and the court commissioner approved it in October. But the divorce papers failed to note that Hughes was pregnant, and when the judge found out, he rescinded the divorce.

Yes, yes, let's force a woman to stay married to her abusive husband. Great idea!!!

The radio program I was listening to this morning said that Washington state has a monetary interest in all this. They want to collect child support from the father. Don't we all think it is a wonderful idea to force a child to know her abusive father just so WA has a couple hundred more dollars every month?

Yet another example of why government should not have anything to do with marriage.

Yes I heard about this on NPR this morning on my way to work.
Another crazy law that should be repealed.
I have to say this is worse then the car dismantling law still on the Iowa law books. Stating if you spook a horse driving down the street you mst carry a tarp & camouflage your vehicle. if this does not help then you must dismantle your vehicle so the horse can pass.
This Judge needs to get off the starbucks & use his brain.

I don't think it is a set law so much as something out of case law. It's goofy one way or another.

They do have laws that assume the paternity of a child when a couple is married, however.

Surely this won't stick. I cannot imagine any reasonable person supporting this.

Dumb Washington Law: "It is mandatory for a motorist with criminal intentions to stop at the city limits and telephone the chief of police as he is entering the town."

I can only imagine that whoever created these laws was either psychotic or under influence when they proposed it. Not to mention those who ratified it.
