What's with all these "Why do Americans...?" threads?

Living in the US, I am one of the "far left" who would likely be considered moderate were I in Scandinavia. I am one of the few "anti-American" liberals who actually exist, though many conservatives would have us believe that all liberals are anti-American.
But I can't help wondering, what's with all this grouping? Just because some Americans think or act or say one thing, doesn't mean we all do. In fact, regarding most of these threads that I have seen popping up recently, I would be on the "European" side of the fence.
But this is what surprises me the most. The people whose political views I side with are the people who don't seem to realize that they are putting us all in one group, when Americans are quite diverse.
I am anti-American because I want policies to change, so I don't feel I should move. I feel I should try to help people here understand where I'm coming from, and why I have my views. To constantly group us as "Americans" and assume we are all the same is obviously a fallacy.
I would be happy if these titles were "Why do conservative Americans...?" or "Why do some Americans...?". It would make more sense.
In fact, this is the first time I think I've ever stuck up for America. ;)

I can see why that would be annoying, I don't like being lumped into a "European" group either.
Although, often we genuinely don't understand how a lot of US citizens think, and where some of the attitudes come from. So sometimes I think those threads are genuine inquiries. A lot of the steroptyping is actually lazyness. People can't be bothered to type "Why do a seemingly large majority of US citizens..." :p
I don't know. Why do Americans keep making them? :p ;) :D

Um... the ways of Americans are alien to outsiders, who therefore seek to understand them?
Um... the ways of Americans are alien to outsiders, who therefore seek to understand them?Perhaps, but I don't understand Americans and yet I've never posted in any of the "Why do Americans..." threads. In fact, I don't understand humans in general. Yet there's never been a "Why do humans..." thread.

Well... That really doesn't make much sense. If you wanted to learn what "Americans" think about something, wouldn't you ask "What do Americans think about...?" instead of "Why do Americans think...?" ?
But, I can understand what you're saying Sonho Real. :)

How does wanting policy changes make you anti-American? Being anti-American means that one hates America; you merely want to change it for the better.

You'd think. Apparently disagreeing with the current government is unpatriotic.

Ah, Sonho Real got to it first. ;)
I am not anti-American in that sense, I am anti-American because that's what fellow Americans would label me.

dude i was just thinking that exact same thing. i'm anti american too but sheez, seems like everybody's picking on every little thing like the way americans pronounce letters and stuff.
you're right, you can't change things by pointing fingers and running. we need to change it because we are the ones here.
thanks for a rather good post.

That right there is the essence of America-wanting change for the better.

That's because your nation is just so dang annoying. We try to be nice, but sometimes we just can help ourselves. :p
Actually, I think you "anti-American Americans" (for want of a better phrase), have probably got the worst deal on here. You take all the put downs delivered to the US by the frustrated ROW, yet you simultaneously get screwed over and insulted by your own people. I think you rock, and you're the main reason I keep a lid on my general dislike of many US policies and attitudes.
Bravo for all the AAAs (what? It's quicker to type! Lazy, remember? :p ) Three cheers! Hip hip and all that. Don't let anyone get you down, unless of course you deserve it. :p
(And if I sound crazy, it's because I am. Going on new hormones, getting depressed while your body adjusts to them, then coming out of the depression whilst coming up to your end of year exams and having to spend all day in your room working will do that to a person. Go figure. :p )
P.S. maybe you should start an AAAA support group? Anti-American Americans Anonymous.

Yeah, and other countries are little saints with bows around their necks.
As I have stated in another thread, America is picked on because it is a massive place. It is also a melting pot of the rest of the world, so it is really a moot point to even argue the lameness of the US. The US is the easiest target for anything. If anyone should be allowed to call Americans a bunch of idiots, it is other Americans.
The fact remains that the US is still one of THE best nations in the world due to rights, organizations, employment, education, etc. Those who refute, well... that's too bad. Tons of people flee here yearly for a BETTER way of life.
What I find hilarious is that those who make fun of "stupid" Americans, are the same people that believe what they read or see in the media. Now, isn't that the pot calling the kettle black... Let me not forget to mention the use of "USians". Sheesh. For those that complain about the racism and hatred in the US, well I must ask... What do you think you are spreading with your "anti-attitudes"?
