R.I.P. Dalek-kind

I've just finished watching the 6th episode of the new Doctor Who series, and it saddens me to report to you the end - yes the end of the line for one of the singlemost psychotically deranged species ever to grace any screen, large or small, in living memory.

The Dalek race has finally been rendered extinct. The Doctor's greatest foe, in the end...exterminated itself. I feel...kinda choked up about it, really. Of all the opponents the Doctor ever faced - from papier-mache sea monsters and people capering around in bug suits, to villainous video superimpositions and stagehands shoving branches through windows at him - none surpassed the Daleks.

Heavily armored. Heavily armed. Engineered to be perfect little lumps of pure unadulterated evil by the late Davros of Skaro. Conquerors of most if not all of the known Universe; the agents of Doom to millions of species, including the Time Lords of Gallifrey. And still for all that, I will miss those cyclopean salt-shakers with the suction-cup hands.

Damn. They say change is good, but I dunno here. Doctor Who without Daleks? It's like having an entire organ missing. Might still go on functioning, but won't feel quite the same and there's going to be a lot of tedious coping involved.

No more Daleks. Damn.

So what are they going to replace them with?

Gangsta Cybermen? Impossible for obvious reasons. :D

Of course, there's now no other Time Lords, either...just a sorta shell-shocked Doctor and his Tardis. They've never lacked a boogeyman-of-the-week on Doctor Who, but you could always count on the Daleks showing up every so often to shriek histrionically and flash their lightbulbs at people. That somehow made it all worth it - the rubber masks, the plywood sets, the styrofoam tentacles - but eventually getting to watch those psycho cyborgs do their crazy thing and try to conquer and destroy the Universe, for whatever reason, though it's usually because the Universe isn't sufficiently populated by Daleks to the exclusion of all living things.

I wish I had a Dalek. I'd feed it and pet it and, after it exterminated me for daring to pet it, it'd go on to subjugate and destroy everything on the planet that wasn't a Dalek. Kinda like owning Black-Masked Lovebirds. And they're so cuuuute...!

I will miss the Daleks (and the time lords too since you say Gallifrey was wiped out). There's a funny advert here in Australia with Daleks and the robot from "Lost in Space"

I'll ask again, very nicely (and I'll keep my Dalek on a leash) do you have a link?

-Actually, I just wanted to bump the thread, but I suddenly felt self-conscious for doing so. Hence asking the question again. Please don't think I've been sitting here waiting for an answer all this time...

They'll be back. They always are.

*Supposidly. Wait for the end of the series, though it's yet to be confirmed, as far as I know...*

Who said Davros was dead? When'd that happen?

Do you not remember that Davros escaped when his ship was destroyed in his last encounter with the Doctor? I gurentee you he shall return.

It gets worse. I've just seen a photo of Janet Fielding either wearing an ill advised bustier or alternatively just covering her modesty with a viscous liquid of some kind :-/

It's the only "Doctor Who" episode I've ever seen, but even I was sad when the Dalek exterminated itself. :( It was a good episode, and I felt really sorry for the Dalek. Lost and alone, the last of its kind, captured and tortured... The scene where the Doctor and the Dalek come face to face is excellent, from the moment he realises what it is, all through their conversation, to when he tries to murder it while it's helpless and screaming in pain. It makes them both more complex and interesting characters than they might otherwise have been.

I haven't seen the new series yet. But as far as I'm concerned, it's still Doctor Who as long as he's being accompanied by a tart. If they do away with that, then I'd stop watching it.

I orginally thought that Billie Piper would be awful, but I think she's a great actor now! She is a really good companion, and I hope she goes on to the next season. I'm sad that Ecclestone is leaving though :(

I doubt we've seen the last of them. They'll be back. They get everywhere, those pesky Daleks. When you least expect it, you'll hear the word 'EXTERMINATE!' echo around the room. And it won't just be me doing a bad impression this time. Not that I'm in your room... um... bye...

You forget that the TARDIS travels through time. Dalek-kind might be eliminated in the 2010 timeline, but if htye go back to 5 zillion BC or whatever, they might still find the Dalek's cruising about in their million strong uberfleet.

I remember earlier doctors fighting Daleks further into the future than 2010...

they'll be back...I believe that the final two episodes (a two-parter) of the series feature an army of Daleks. I hope that this is true, cos it was sad to see the Dalek die :( I'll do a search and see if I can find any information to verify this. Presumably, as someone already said, their return is possible due to the time travel capabilities of the TARDIS.

From what I understand he finds himself back at the time when the war occured. I think he gets the chance to alter history, and prevent the death of the Time Lords.

Looking forward to it.

Doctor Who is a major exercise in handwaving. If you need a plot twist, you just have to tug on the scarf and mumble something. Your compatriots will suddenly exclaim that you have a good idea, and it's off to the races to solve any problem.

I thought they were coming back later in the series?

Anyway, the daleks could time-travel, the Gallifreiians could time travel, but I thought most of them had actually been 'erased' from history i.e. they no longer exist, never existed and never will exist, even in their own time.

Well, I don't know what's in store for the rest of the series, but I have to hand it to Russell T. Davies - he's done a phenomenal job bringing the Doctor into the 21st century of broadcasting.

I hope that if the Daleks do indeed somehow return, that such a return be somewhat more credibly than say, having the Doctor step out from a shower, and his companion Rose complain of having a terrible dream a la 'Dallas', only to have a squad of salt-shakers burst in through the closest broom-cupboard.

Actually, come to think of it that might just work, lol. And btw, I once worked on a contract basis for Russell T. Davies, and he's a pretty intense guy. I don't know if I'd've wanted a full-time gig working with him, but he cares pretty passionately about his work, and it shows.

The Doctor hasn't worn a scarf for 24 years. Do try and keep up...

I think the idea is that the Daleks and Time Lords had a 'final ultimate' battle in which they both wiped each other from ever having existed... Time in the Dr Who Universe works funny like that (like the Doctor and companion walking in on himself and being told off for being there, not even including the ‘Three, Five and Two Doctor’ episodes and similar cross-Regenerational literature... ;)

i.e., while the Doctor may indeed have already travelled to both ends of the Universe and many points inbetween, it isn't a 'single immutable timeline' and we have seen instances where he has to work to keep the future intact, and the trailors for the next episode indicate that there is something special about the way the timeline is able to flex in some respects but not others (which may be leading up to explaining the whole "Can't even go back to before the Last Battle" thing...). If the writers and Russel T. Davis in particular are any good, I expect some of the still open questions to be answered by the end of the series (but not all of them, because there may well be more series, or perhaps they will intruduce further questions... ;)).

Another opinion I’d like to convey is that I bet the Daleks aren’t extinct. There’ll be some kludge. (After all, we know one managed to slip through a knot in time and land on vaguely-contemporary Earth, so why not others?)

Lastly, did this Dalek say “And what about the traitor?” Was that a reference to Davros? I can never remember the difference between the Imperial Daleks and the other lot, and which ones think of Davros as leader and which think of him as an imperfect predecessor (at best) that should also be exterminated. Sounds like both lots teamed up against Gallifrey, though, unless there was also internecine conflict as well…
