The importance of Occam's razor

We all live on the inside surface of a hollow earth that contains the entire universe. Sounds like an absurd statement, right? But with some complex math one can invert the laws of physics and make it work well on paper. It can't be experimentally disproven, since travel through the center of the hollow planet would be impossible. As you approach the center you slow down and shrink. The journey takes as long as it would to cross the actual universe. That's where Occam's razor comes in. The extra complexity in describing a hollow earth makes it very unlikely.

Of course, the problem with the razor is that you accept as reality what ever is currently conceived of as being the simplest explanation of a data set irrespective of whether or not it is really the correct explanation of the data set.

That's quite funny. One question though - couldn't you just take a tangent along the surface of the Earth? A truly flat, inflexible rod about a mile long would show whether the Surface was convex or concave, surely?

Laws of physics are altered by the hollow earth model. Light doesn't travel straight lines, but rather arcs. In practice it would mimic our universe exactly. An Egyptian mathematcian who's name escapes me right now worked it out perfectly.

That would work over the ocean, but imagine trying that in the Rockies.

How about a massive bit of string? You pin it to the ground at one point then walk around the Earth. Concave= String 'descends' from the sky, bisects stars and wraps around the moon. Eh? Eh? Ah, sod it.

I thought Occams razor was to do with discarding plurality when it is not needed. As far as i know it doenst say anything like "the simplest explanation is the best".

I bet I could disprove it, but I just drank 2 PBRs and my brain is a little mushy.

In that case I stand corrected, but I hope I did share an interesting concept.
Oh, and the Egyptian's name was Mostafa Abdelkader. He worked out the math that makes the hollow earth universe function identically to our universe.
I bet I could disprove it, but I just drank 2 PBRs and my brain is a little mushy.
ugh...PBR. why would you do that to yourself?
The real issue is:
THE IMPORTANCE OF MY BUTT
I mean, think about all the methane it provides to to...those....people..who..um..use.methane. for stuff.
If you are a dead-serious person don't complain about my insanity. It's entirly not my fault.

Practicallity, gentlepeople, practicallity.
When you have two models that both explain your data equally well, you may as well use the simplest one to base your predictions on, because it will be easier to remember. If later observations show that the more complex model is more usefull, change.
