...I recommend looking at a map of Yorkshire. You will find silly place names occur remarkably frequently. The classic to mention would be "Ramsbottom", so I'll contribute that for now.
However, in Co. Durham, just North of Durham city itself, I believe, there is a suburb called "Pity Me", which I've always wanted to know the etymology of.

...that bad? Me and me best mate nearly ended up living there next year when we have to live out. Fortunately, we managed to get somewhere the nearer side of Neville's Cross. Which, if you took it one way, could be another amusing name really, couldn't it? ;)

I gather every infantryman who went there thought it was very original to do so. I imagine the locals found it somewhat wearing after a while, all the posing under street signs.

Some time ago, officials decided to rename it to the slightly less offensive 'Grope Lane', but this still caused a few problems. Finally, by some amazing stretch of the imagination, Oxford city council renamed it 'Magpie Lane', but we locals all know what it used to be.
In London there's an area called the Vale of Health, which seemed a bit of an impossibility in such a hugely polluted city as our beloved capital...
