Best Late 80's/Early 90's Band?
Yes, I left out R.E.M, Alice in Chains and Tool (even though I like them). There are only 10 options on the poll, see. And I know Metallica and Sonic Youth started in the early 80's, but whatever. :p
There's probably some others I forgot too. Ah well.

I would say. . .The Corn and Whiskey All Jug Band. They were big in the Nashville area until 93, then they faded out when lead steel guitarist Brad Chesserby was killed in a drunk driving accident.
well there is a poll now.

It's not!? When did it change!? OMG...*stares off into distance* I have been in Japan toooo long.
But Soundgarden was my favorite. Nirvana close behind. I didn't care for Bad Motor Finger but SuperUnknown was amazing.

Yeah, pretty much. I almost left Metallica off the poll, but I figured too many people would bitch. I did think of Gn'R, but i'm not really into hair metal. They're OK, I guess, but I never really got into them. Always preferred the alt. rock stuff more, (generally. Except for Kyuss, who I rate as my equal favourite on the list, along with Nirvana. RATM too. I like all of the bands on the poll, though.)

It's a haven for music producers of all sorts.
Did you live in Nashville before Japan?
Hmm...
I loved Depeche Mode, New Order, Sonic Youth and Violent Femmes... (as you stated, these bands started out early to mid 80's, but some of their best stuff was late 80's/early 90's)
much preferred Stone Roses, Oasis, primal scream, jesus and mary chain,

Thought of them, and they're no.3 on my list of bands to get into (after the Cure and My Bloody Valentine) but I didn't think they were quite revered enough for everyone to notice :p
Missed Faith No More too.

As far as My Bloody Valentine goes, Loveless is typically hailed as their classic album. It's somewhat different than their previous stuff. And it's hard to say if it was indicative of their new sound, as it was their last album.
As far as the Jesus and Mary Chain goes, either Psychocandy or Automatic. Automatic primarily because of "Head On" which the Pixies covered on their Trompe Le Monde album.

It's okay, Trompe Le Monde is their worst album. I think it's because of Kim Deal's lack of participation in the songwriting and vocals.

Definitely! The same would go for any one of the bands on this list. Except for Metallica. Replace them with Alice in Chains :p

We see Rugby Union games here on Fox Soccer Channel (AKA Fox Sports World)... also Super 12 games.
Why is it that, in Rugby Union, when a guy is tackled, the tacklers must get off of him... and then the guy rolls the ball backward with his foot?
In Super 12 and the Rugby World Cup, when a guy is tackled he is pummeled into the turf and the defenders pile on him .
Which is the true rugby? The one where the defenders have to get off the player with the ball after he's been tackled, or the one where the defenders stay on top of the guy with the ball until he's released the ball with his own hands?

That's Rugby League. I'm not a fan. I grew up in South Africa (confused yet?) and we didn't really have any League there... In union the guy being tackled just has to release the ball, and the tacklers can hang around.

Union is the original, and League split from it somewhere along the line...

Yeah, tried that. Shipping is usually a minimum of $8...occasionally importing is cheaper, especially in the case of rare CD's. Oddly enough, rarer stuff is easier to find in discount stores anyway, so it's no real bother...I usually earn over $100 a week in pure spending money, so if I wanted to, I could get at least 10 CD's/Vinyl records a week. :)

Bass: Scott Reeder
Drums: Alfredo Hernandez
After Kyuss, Homme did a stint with Screaming Trees before disappearing for a while. Garcia and Reeder formed Unida a few years later. I seem to remember Garcia doing something between Unida and Kyuss, but I'm drawing a blank.
Homme went on to form Queens of the Stone Age with Hernandez and original, original Kyuss bassist Nick Oliveri.
OH...and the original drummer was Brant Bjork.
:D
Well done. :)

That's Rugby League. I'm not a fan. I grew up in South Africa (confused yet?) and we didn't really have any League there... In union the guy being tackled just has to release the ball, and the tacklers can hang around.
Union is the original, and League split from it somewhere along the line...
cool... sorry about getting Union and League confused.
I was able to watch Australia in the 2003 world cup and have sort of a short list of players in my head:
Wendell Sailor (sp?)
Matt Giteau
Elton Flatley
George Greagan (sp?...never have seen his name spelled)
Steven Larkham
The lone Springbok i've committed to memory is Joost Van der Vesthuizen (sp?)
Who could forget a name like that? hehe
Guys from England: Wilkinson, Lewsey, DaLaglio (sp?), Robinson (the fast winger guy)
New Zealand: Joe Rocococo (sp?), Carlos Spencer

Yes, I left out R.E.M, Alice in Chains and Tool (even though I like them). There are only 10 options on the poll, see. And I know Metallica and Sonic Youth started in the early 80's, but whatever. :p
There's probably some others I forgot too. Ah well.
You also left out:
Skid Row
Trixter
Winger
Nelson
Slaughter
Firehouse
None of which made it big until after 1985 and all of which IMO are better than everyone you listed here for the poll.

I MAKE KILL ON BAD HAIR METAL!
If you want decent bands from that era:
Motley Crue
Pretty Boy Floyd
Guns N' Roses
Dangerous Toys
Skid Row was pretty good...way out of the league of the rest of the other hair metal you listed. Nelson was a freakshow/musical nepotism.

I'll grant you that some of those groups weren't great, but they were still better than everyone one on the list provided. Didn't G'n'R and Crue start earlier than that?

They're STILL going. My previous band opened up for them at a local music festival a few years ago.
*le sigh* I am jealous. They are one of my favorite bands of all time.
Of those, Rage. Followed by Pearl Jam.

I' gonna go with Rage. Or Soundgarden. Or Metallica. Or Tool. Or Pantera (whom you missed). Oh wait, I have to choose? OK.
I choose RaSoMeToPa. Yes. Um.

Or if I have to pick one of the above mentioned.. Metallica..
Or Pantera (whom you missed)..
Aye, oops. They have some of the most evil riffs ever without sounding cheesy. Pretty hard to do.

I'm surprised someone else didn't bring up the topic of Pantera. Completely dicarding everything before Cowboys, I think they were excellent.

Yeah, I agree totally. I knew there had to be something i'd forgotten...
Meh, I'm not too big on late 80's/early 90's stuff. However, I'll have to say The Cult.

They are really great guys and a very, very good live band.
In fact, most bands I've met/played show with were really cool guys... but there's always exceptions to the rule:
1. Type-O Negative: assholes...all of them. I almost got into a fistfight with a drunk Peter Steele. He was hitting on my GF (rather aggressively) while we were backstage at a Pantera/Type-O show.
2. Rex from Pantera. Just a loud-mouthed prick.
Everyone else I've dealt with were pretty damned cool. :)

By the late 80's early 90's Metallica was a bunch of has-beens that just hadn't figured it out.

Pixies of that list. U2 was pretty good in the late 80s, as was The Cure.

Cult, Catherine WheelOoh the Cult and Catherine Wheel.
I love the Pixies :)
I even started playing the bass because I dated a guy that had a major thing for Kim Deal. The guy's gone, but the bass isn't :)
