Have you ever been near a secret government base?
Eight years ago I was on a road trip with a friend. We were driving from Salt Lake City, north through Idaho and then in to Oregon and back to our hometown in California. Quite nice overall.
The second day we were in Idaho and we decided to drive to the world's first nuclear reactor. We drove for about one hour out from some shithole Idaho city that has the world's largest potato, remind me to tell you aobut that sometime. Anyway, we came to the place. It was the middle of nowhere. There was an intersection. To the right was a high fence with no signs, a small guardhouse with guard and nothing except mountains about 10 miles/15 kilometers away. To the right was another high fence with radioactive warning signs and an old abandoned building.
There was a sign that said it was the world's first reactor but it didn't say left or right. We decided to drive to the guardhouse and ask the guy where we should go. We drove over, he stepped out, he was wearing non-descript fatigues, class B's army I think. He cradled his M-16 as we pulled up.
My friend began to ask for directions. . ."Turn around and leave." he said.
He didn't smile and he said not one more word. We left in one quick hurry. As we pulled ahead to make a u-turn a hummer came out of nowhere, and I mean nowhere. Four passengers, a fifty mounted on top and they were looking unfriendly.
It is one of the most interesting things that has ever happened to me. I have always wondered what the hell they had going on out there.

how would you know it's a secret government base, if it's secret?

Never had anything to do with the government, but way back in the 90ies I used to live right across the street of a medical research facility.

One night I was walking home from a party, and when I came near the building a black van "raced" onto the compound, came to a sudden halt in front of the delivery entrance and spat out four guys in black fatigues with MP 5s...
Then two other guys were carrying a small chest into the building, followed by the guards, and then the thing was out of sight as I was hurrying home, because it all felt more then just a little awkward.

Due to the freedom of information act there is a wonderful sign on the way into town pointing off the motorway telling you about the "Secret Bunker 3 1/2 miles".

Apart from the colouring that's the same sort of sign :p personally I think they're all pointing in the wrong direction to confuse whoever we're currently waiting to attack us.

I saw a nucler silo in New Mexico once.. I got out of the car to take a picture and noticed a big "photography prohibited" sign on the fence. So I took a picture of it instead. Yup, that's Pepe "Danger" Dominguez for you, a regular rebel. Take *That* Uncle Sam.

I hiked for several hours with a group of friends to see one of those secret government facilities that all locals know is there. It was a little scary, very stupid, but quite fun. We were successful.

The internet has removed the guessing game part of finding secret government bases. Now you can look up satellite images on any location in the US for free and anonymously online. Area-51 and all the rest are there to be seen with a few clicks of the mouse.

There are several underground facilities in the US. Yes, you can see a satellite photo of the area, but you're going to see roads, fence, and trees.

Step onto the grounds, and you probably won't like what happens next.

Yeah, I got a refrigerator magnet from Area 51.

...I had to steal it, but I got one.

I've never been on a secret military base, but I have been in a secret area of a military base. Air Cadets had an annual skills camp at Amberley Air Force Base, I was selected for kitchen duty and the guy in charge took us into an area where they analyse areial photographs. I didn't see any aliens, or even any photos but I was somewhere I wasn't supposed to be and that's kinda cool! :)
