why do we throw up for so many reasons?

You throw up when your sick... yeah i figure thats just cause of your body trying to get rid of germs, throw up when your poisoned, same just getting rid of stuff.

but you throw up when you get motion sickness, or some people when they see or taste some food that is disgusting, or see images that are disgusting, or smell disgusting smells..etc...

Why do we throw up those times? (i posted this here because this forum has many smart people)

First, the disgusting things is more a pyschological response then anything. If you perceive it as disgusting, your body reacts to it that way.

Motion sickness is attributed to many things, so that is a little vague to answer. Pretty much though, you one sense (forgot the name at the moment) that controls balance is off, and thus your body reacts to it as such.

As for shoving your finger down your throat.....that is known as your gag reflex. It's a natural reflex. That is how you can tell drug addicts; they lose their gag reflex when on drugs.

Throwing up when you see something disgusting seems like a bit of overkill, unless of course you see something disgusting in what you're eating, then it makes sense. If you sit down to a meal and then something "disgusting" happens, like people start throwing up, then it could be a good idea for you to throw up too, just in case the first people to throw up are doing it because they've been poisioned. (Food poisoning is a very common hazard in many parts of the world.)

Throwing up due to motion sickness could be just a bit of a short circuit in our make up, as our evolution never really involved us moving faster than you can run or swing on a vine. You get motion sick when there is conflict between what your senses are telling you. If you're in a car and reading, then your sense of balence might be telling you you're moving, but this dosen't match the infomation of your eyes. I think you throw up due to motion sickness because your body interprets the conflict in signals as a sign that you may have been poisioned or drugged by something you've eaten.

This is an excellent question you've asked Gwazwomp, I get a real thrill of intellectual excitment thinking through things like this.

Hey ... just be glad there's a warning system in place when it comes to vomits.

I wonder (and really just guess!) if perhaps the motion-sickness vomit reflex has something to do with the idea that the experience of motion sickness is similar to becoming dizzy from poisonous food or something?

I used to get nauseus from what I thought was motion sickness, but it turns out it was petrol fumes leaking into the chassis of my Dad's car. I only got seasick once, on a very turbulent boatride on holidays as a child, but I wasn't chucky, just queasy.
Nowadays I usually only vomit when I've really overdone the booze, which is very rarely. Localised cat-farts, and the faecal splashback when a client farts his enema back in my face are also near-spew moments, but I have successfully restrained myself. The last time I vomited was when I had menstrual cramps. My doctor speculated that perhaps this was because Naprogesic can be an irritant to the stomach, but I take them as directed (with food) and only feel vomitous when I'm cramping.

Well, there's a "vomit centre" in the brain. I kid you not...
And I'm guessing there are lots of different nervous inputs. I'm p;retty sure that the sympathetic nervous system is involved- since it's activated when you're stressed, in pain or ill. And our nerve functions tend to overlap, and we get crossed wires sometimes, explaining random puking episodes.

1 Motion sickness- I think that the disorienting motion causes the brain to think it's getting delerious with fever, and consequently causes the body to purge it's digestive system in order to remove any potentially poisonous or rotten food.

2 Disgusting images/smells/flavors- It's a warning system that kept our ancestors from gorging themselves on rotten or contaminated food.

As for shoving your finger down your throat.....that is known as your gag reflex. I can understand the purpose of the gag reflex to help prevent you from swallowing something you shouldn't, but I don't see how puking helps it.

I tihnk puking is just a coincidental thing where you contract your gut to expel the thing that shouldn't be down there, and you stomach contents pop up to say hello...

you get motion sickness because your body can not explain why youre feeling like your moving, but appear to be still,.. this is why motion sick people like to sit in the front seat of cars, they see waht's goin on which gives their body an explaination for why they feel like there moving. Also if your body says youre moving in un-natural ways for extended periods of times, example g forces sharp turns loop de loops etc,.. eventually anywone will get sick it's jsut a matter of how much you can take. Some ppl cant take as much, that's what makes evolution so great, were all not the same everywone has varatie. Some ppl just take a lot less to get motion sick.

On with gag reflex,.. This originated with things that didn't have hands to pull stuff out of their mouth if it got stuck,. one way to free somethign from your throat/mouth is to puke it out,.. your stomach and abdominals violentlly contract forcing liquid up your throat, this is a last ditch of your body to try to save youre butt cuz it thinks your choking to death,.. why else would you have something stuck in your throat,... anywaise i hope this helped

lol Wow...this is an interesting subject. I, personally, throw up far too often than I'd like. If I get really stressed, worried, or sick (naturally), up comes the food! Or lack thereof...

I'm not one to know much physical science, so uhm...I really have no explanation except that our stomachs are sometimes weaker than others'.

Ever considered that throwing up is like peeing out of your mouth?

Just had to say it.

Heh, well, as someone who throws up A LOT, and unintentionally at that...

I throw up when I eat meat because the enzymes in my digestive tract have, over time, lost the potency necessary to digest animal meat. The only exception, which thankfully keeps me from the ranks of the average vegetarian, is turkey, which no doctor has yet been able to fully explain to me (I suspect that the composition of turkey is less dense and easier digestible than red meat, for instance).
I throw up when I see or something disgusting because, in most cases, it's somebody else vomitting. Though hearing/seeing people hock up mucus to spit it....something about that gets me gagging as well (a la Heathers and Titanic, to name a few).
However, I also throw up when I laugh too hard. I throw up when I have cramps. I throw up when I cry for an extended amount of time (ie 10 minutes or more....so really not that long). I throw up when I cough too much. Maybe I have a more overactive vomit reflex than the average forumer.....but, on the upside, I have practically no gag-reflex to speak of!
I mean....if that could be somehow construed as good, in any manner other than semi-sexual.....
