Favorite Musical
Right now I'm listening to Wicked, but I'd be hard pressed to pick which one of them all is my utmost favorite.
The top three, however, I could say would be Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Dancer in the Dark. I love Lars Von Triers anyway, but after I saw this I had newfound awe and respect for Bjork as an actress. She was breathtaking.

I actually just saw Phantom on saturday at the Majestic, New York. It's the only one I've seen but I loved it.
It's a tie between Star Trek: The Musical and Predator: On Broadway for me.

Somehow, mentioning Star Trek reminded me of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, and so of course I must think of the musical in Season 5.. that was brilliant :o)~

I only saw one: Catz
In my opinion
1. West side story
2. Les Miserables
3. Phantom of the Opera
4. Wicked
Porgy and Bess is a Contemporary Opera not a musical.

Okay .... then please provide the authoritative definitions of "musical," "opera," and "contemporary opera"
I havn't seen Cats, Avenue Q, Hairspray, Cabaret, Song of Music, and a variety of others. All in due time, I'm only 17 - I have my whole life to see it all :o)~
DUde, musicals are pretty much the best thing ever.

Friends of mine went to see Batboy and said it was utter crap.
My personal favourites, I liked Cats, but my favourite by far was Stomp, in the Vaudeville Theatre in London.

Isn't Stomp more of a musical group?
I saw Wicked in the beginning of January, and it is tied for my favorite with Rent.

Of course, after how Lars treated her during the making of that wonderful movie, she's sworn never to act ever again!
He has that affect on people. Nicole Kidman suddenly became "unavailable due to other movie commitments" for 'Mandalay', the 2nd in his 'Dogville' trilogy.
I'm surprised no-one's said 'The King & I' yet, so let me be the first.

Okay .... then please provide the authoritative definitions of "musical," "opera," and "contemporary opera"
Musical Theatre tends to be more concerned with plot, occasional adding dialogue to keep the plot moving, with the emphasis on the moving plot. While Opera tends to focus on the movement of the music, Dialogue is a big nono in an Opera. Contemporary Opera sprang out of the 20th century, Gershwin, Bernstein, Blitzstein, all were major influences on it's development. The Musical really sprang from the Contemporary Operetic movement. The New Generation composers slowly moved away from the decadent and flamboyous Opera experience preferring simplicity and realism over the often ridiculous and overly dramatic Operatic style of presentation to the audience. And the Audience prefered it to. Thus Contemporary Opera can be seen as the bridge between the Generation of the Opera and the Generation of the Musical Theatre.

loheingrin! number one best i'd have to say.
Well that's an Opera actually......
Though a fabulous one, i have an outrageous love for Wagnerian Opera
In random order...
Sweeney Todd
Company
Sunday in the Park with George
Kiss of the Spider Woman
Rent
Parade
Chicago
Cabaret
In other words, musical drama instead of musical comedy. ;)
