That is nice, but that 20GB memory makes me believe that it's over my $300 price range.

I've used sony's products before, and generally found them to be, by and large, crap.

Both my friend and I own iRiver players, and neither of us are happy with them. Mine in particular promised a 20 hour battery life, but it lasts for (maybe) one. It doesn't have very much space, and the so called "recording music off the radio" didn't work at all. I wish now that I had bought iPod.

That is nice, but that 20GB memory makes me believe that it's over my $300 price range.
The iPod mini measures 9.1 x 5.1 x 1.3 centimeters and costs 28,140 yen.

Sony's Network Walkman, on the other hand, has a 20-gigabyte hard disk drive capable of recording up to around 13,000 tracks of music. It is designed to work with the Connect online music store.

In the area of battery life, the NW-HD5 can continuously play music for a maximum of 40 hours. Slightly smaller than a cigarette pack, it costs 35,000 yen.

A Sony spokesperson is confident the Walkman can do well. "Of all the mobile music players, we have the best hardware," he boasted. "And 40 hours of consecutive play time are the longest in the industry.

Hmm 40 hr battery life, that could Sony just talking out of its ass. Now I hear from my friend that IPods do not support MP3 format. Can anyone confirm this?

Yes, they do. Sony's do not. They make you convert your files to ATRAC or something silly like that. Failed on my friend's player, not only did she not get any music on their but it blue screened her computer.

Yes, they do. Sony's do not...the Sony does support both MP/ and JPEG formats like the most expensive Ipods...and the Sony battery kicks ass.

Both are really bad investments. The iPod mini is worse, but they're both really bad. I recommend the Creative Zen, or any type of Archos. NEVER get an ipod. Both companies offer players of 20GB or more for under $300.

I've been very pleased with my Iriver player - even though I only bought the 256mb version.

The "radio-record" function has always worked flawlessly for me, but I really have no use for it.

IMO, the best feature is the line-in direct encoding. I have converted mass cassettes & vinyl to CD with it.

My only gripe is that there is no easy "one-button" voice record mod to it. If I'm listening to MP3 and need to make a quick memo, I have to go through 4 steps to do it.

Other than that, the built in mic for voice recording is good enough that I recorded an entire funeral (2+hours) at 128kbps and was able to do some really nice things with the file in WavePad (a free editor).

I don't think the Ipod can do that. I say buy as big an Iriver as you can afford.

Nope. Can't stand consoles. I've used it. The interface is horrible, it took me a good 15 minutes to figure out how to use it, and it apparantly BoSed by friend's computer. She only could get a grand total of one song on their before it died, every time.

Load of crap, ANY hard drive can survive a fall from 30 meters, but here is the catch. If the drive is spinning and it slams into a hard surface, your fucked. Expect my mini :D

Take the ipod mini which I happen to have one, and a large one ( got them both from different grandparatsn* my ipod has survived drops down flights of stairs, and still worked perfectly. Sony is by large, shit.

Get one of the new minis with the 6gb hard drive, you wont regret it.

Oh, BTW, my Iriver does get around 40hrs playback from it's single AA battery, at least it does at the volume level I use & with my earbuds. Louder/more draining headphones will change your results.

Here is another product that looks very interesting to me because of its multiple-use/flexibility/expandability factor...

Of course they are diffierent animals... but then, the original post was "Iriver or iPod", not "iPod or Sony"...

I only purchase multi-function devices. If it can't record, I won't buy it. I like the Iriver's because the direct-encode and DON'T have hard drives.

That is all.

All of these newer mp3 players are simple trying to bring Apple down, and if they think that they can do this with empty promises, then, by all means, let them try. Oh, and to whoever posted the page of that "all-new" 20GB Sony Walkman, or whatever, it's dead ugly.

You want class, get an iPod. You want reliability, get an iPod. You want sound quality, get an iPod. You want originality and good looks, get an iPod. You want battery life, better not get an iPod... :p
