This is just stupid beyond words. Mugabe, who beats, imprisons, and kills his political opposition and has never won a fair election in his life, has accused (via a state-run TV station) the UK of election fraud. Yeah, right. We all know how squeaky clean and honest his own elections are. Bastard.

All the UK election was was an ad for why FPP is shitty.

Mugabe would be better off sitting quietly and not drawing attention to himself if he wants to continue what he's doing. Idiot.

I think we need a new thread:

Who is crazier? Mugabe or Chavez?

Mugabe by far. It's valuable to remember that regardless of how anyone feels about Chavez, he was democratically elected in certified-clean votes.

I reckon there's some truth to that, but I can't help but wonder how many times that's been said about Castro.

I hope you're right, but also, I hope that the hydra doesn't sprout another head and some other African warlord/strongman takes his place, simply doing the same thing under a new name, which is so prevalent in the third world today.

Ha, Mugabe calling someone else's elections rigged. He needs to get slapped. "Don't throw rocks when you live in a glass house," definitely applies here.

The current govt in Zimbabwe also gets to assign a certain amount of seats in the next govt essentially meaning that the other party has to get well over the majority of votes to get a majority in the parliment.

Fear? That can be a useful tactic, even in developed nations - but only up to a point. Mulroney used that (by conspiring with big business to spread angst amongst the middle-class) to gain his final majority government before people in Canada got fed up and lynched the Tories.

Mulroney wisely abandoned his sinking ship and resigned from the PMO about six months before his government got reamed by the electorate. So from where I sit, fear can somewhere get you where you want to go in politics, but it doesn't usually let you stay there.

But as for oppressive regimes, well - sky's the limit I suppose.

Oh, you mean fear that gave the Bush administration the extra 5% it needed to win re-election? All that scaremongering over terra-ists and such, remember? Fear and voter intimidation is not limited to third-world countries, sadly.
