Dismay at US Koran 'desecration' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/4525941.stm)

Pakistani officials say they are "deeply dismayed" over reports that the Koran was desecrated at the US detention facility in Guantanamo Bay.
The latest edition of the American Newsweek magazine said such tactics were used to rattle suspects.

It says that US personnel on one occasion flushed a copy of Islam's most holy book "down the toilet".

Pakistan, a conservative Muslim nation, is also a key US ally in its war against terrorism.

'Highly objectionable'

Pakistani foreign office spokesman, Jalil Abbas Jilani, told the AFP news agency Pakistan was also concerned about "the highly objectionable and regrettable treatment meted out to the detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre".

Mr Jilani said the reported act of sacrilege had shocked people of every faith around the world.

"The government of Pakistan condemns the incident and demands that an inquiry should be conducted to bring to justice the perpetrators of this shameful act," he said.

Insulting the Koran and Islam's Prophet Mohammed is regarded as blasphemy and punishable by death in Pakistan.

In an interview last week with the BBC's Haroon Rashid, Abdul Rahim Muslim Dost, an Afghan prisoner recently released from the Cuban detention centre, said a number of Arab prisoners had still not spoken to their investigators after three years to protest at the desecration of the Koran by guards.

Mr Dost also said inmates' beards were shaved and the prisoners were shouted at during interrogations.

The US is holding about 520 inmates at Guantanamo Bay, many of them al-Qaeda and Taleban suspects captured in Pakistan and Afghanistan following the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.

The Pakistanis are only allies of the US after all, so who cares. Pffft.. flushing a Koran down the toilet... frat brothers, army initiates and Ku Klux Klan apprentices have to do that in jest all the time. And the Bible is being flushed down toilets around the globe and nobody complains about that. Pffft can't they deal with a few harmless jokes in Pakistan? Them Gitmo detainees are just having fun! I tell ya, FUN!!! :D

nah, they seem to be largely ignoring it. The Chinese and South Koreans are being vocal about it lately but the Japanese just waddle on smiling and liking the Chinese and Koreans.
Must get real annoying for you guys that people just won't let go about WWII. I enjoy military history and I have studied and read about WWII but every year. . .59 years! 60 years since! 65 years ago D-Day. . .etc etc etc.

Hrmm ... and here I keep being told this isn't a Christian vs. Muslim war and, yet, every time I turn around, the people in Gitmo are being "interrogated" in a way only offensive to Muslims.

Whenever a US soldier desecrates a Qur'an, that US soldier is committing an atrocity against ordinary American Muslims as well. Since there's a war on, wouldn't that be treason on some level? I don't feel particularly safe in a country where US soldiers don't care if they offend me or commit atrocities against me.

These people are suspected of killing and in many cases are known to have killed thousands of people and you're riled over a book? It's paper, ink and if you're lucky, it has a leather or imitation leather cover. Scripture of any god, goddess or collection thereof, is carried in the HEART! If they do not prove their own beliefs in daily life, then they are unbelievers to their own faith and deserve whatever they get.

As for the shaving, come on, this detention center is in CUBA! Yes, they're used to a hot climate...but it's a mostly dry one. Cuba is hot, humid and miserable in the summertime...for health reasons they're better off without the facial hair. In addition, I was unaware that prisoners on remand in any US prison, whether it is city, county, county, state or federal, were allowed beard. Mustasches, maybe, but not beards. This would be for ease in quickly identifying prisoners.

I don't really think it matters now. We're on a countdown to Armegeddon anyway, it's not a matter of "if'. Instead, it's a matter of when, who's involved and on what side. If you really think we're gonna avoid a WW3, well, keep dreaming.

Oh, btw: I don't differentiate between one religion and another. Matter of fact, I tend to leave religion OUT of the issues altogether. Religion is fine, I'm sure, for some things, but on a global scale they're sort of ineffectual as a platform. If a person is an asshole, then they're an asshole and to hell with what or who they do or don't believe. And anyway, the North African nations have been squabbling like five-year-old kids for thousands of years...chances are if those idiots hadn't brought their shit to American shores, we'd have abided by the UN dictates and stayed out of it.
