A random observation i've made...

I've made the interesting observation that most would-be presidents (like Bob Dole, Al Gore and John Kerry) quickly fade into nothingness after a lost election. Ok, it's not exactly suprising, but, isn't it amazing? :)

Well... since he got his last prescription filled, Bob Dole's been "popping up" all over.

That was subtle.

Unless you're in Australia when it simply qualifies you to lead the opposition. The current leader of the opporisition has been appointed to the post of party head three times now, twice he's led the Labour party to election an election loss and they're giving him a third shot. Poor Simon Crean. :(

Crean would have been electoral suicide as well. Labor are screwed.

I disagree. He was going through a hard time when he lost the leadership, but the ALP was starting to pick up on the polls. As soon as this happened he was replaced by Latham and the polls continued to rise and everyone associated it with his appointment. If they stuck with him and still lost at least they wouldn't have that loud mouthed jerk running the party. How embarassing!

As I recall John Kerry is still a senator. I wouldn't call that 'nothingness'. I don't know what the hell Bob Dole is doing now. He's probably retired. When you're retired you tend to stay out of the spotlight. Al Gore seems to want to do something for the Democratic party. Maybe he'll run for congress again.

What exactly is the alternative that you envisioned?

Well, after all, they lost. Obviously people didn't want them in the spot light (or at least the majority), and so now they're out of it. Simple, neh? (;

Richard Nixon lost to John Kennedy in 1960. He went on to win the election in 1968. John Kerry is still a senator and he still sends e-mails about the political issues he'll address during the next week to his presidential campaign mailing list. That's an indication he'll run for president in 2008.

Mmm...I dunno. I think he's gonna back down and let Hillary run. :headbang:

Just pointing out a small flaw in your statement. ;)

It's actually quite hilarious. For months, Kerry was on everyone's lips. Now, he probably won't even get a footnote in history. After all, who the hell remembers who Lincoln's opponent was?

Stephen A. Douglas, who he ran against for Senate in 1858 and lost.

Yes, he defeated McClellan in 1864 for re-election, but his first term of office began in 1860 with the Douglas defeat which was made possible by the reputation he made when debating Douglas for the Senate in 1858.

Indeed, with the Lincoln-Douglas debates being some of the most influential in the history of rhetoric. :)

John Kerry is still a Senator because he did not give up his seat to run for the presidency. What will happen when runs for re-election remains to be seen.
Bob Dole is retired, he is also quite a bit older than Gore and Kerry. Al Gore could not win a seat in the Senate again. Keep in mind he did not carry the state of Tennessee. He is not very well liked there. Maybe he could be a carpet bagger like Hillary.

He did win the popular vote, but that means absolutely nothing in the U.S. If, say, Gore won in California (popular), the represenatives don't have to vote for him in the electoral college. It is a good idea that they do, if they like their jobs, but it is not necessary.

Gore won the popular vote, but Bush won in the right places. :D

Improbable. Hillary Clinton is unelectable and John Kerry knows it. Stories of her bitchy personality are well known and won't be well received by many people. Jay Leno will make his Michael Jackson jokes look light hearted if she runs. Any Democrat that is considering her as a candidate has truely lost touch with reality.

Al Gore could not win a seat in the Senate again. Keep in mind he did not carry the state of Tennessee. He is not very well liked there. Maybe he could be a carpet bagger like Hillary.

If it worked for her then he should be able to pull it off, no sweat.
