I propose a question to everyone out here. What was the first fighting videogame ever? The earliest I can find is Urban Cowboy for the NES in 1986. There may have been something for the Atari somewhere along the line. I really do need the answer to this question. Thank you.

Cannot think of a name

The first one I encountered, and the one that I always felt set the standard, was Karate Champion. It was that one with two joysticks for each player and the joystick combos equaled combos for your dude. The name is too generic to make a google search anything but very frustrating. I wouldn't argue that it is the first 'cause I'm not that savvy, but that was the first I ever saw.

It's "Karate Champ," and it was made by Data East.

after a bit of research, it looks like karate was released 01/01/80 and looks older than boxing. boxing WAS released in 1980, but the exact date is uncertain.

Depends what you mean by 'fighting' - Spacewar, writen in 1962 qualifies for certain senses of the word.

If memory serves, "International Karate" was the first beat-em-up game. Of course, it depends on what one counts as a beat-em-up.

Definition of RPG:

Adventure: Atari 2600
Zork/Crystal Caverns : PC

but I think there was one even earlier.

Colossal Cave Adventure - early 70s, running on a PDP-10 was the first adventure game, but whether that counts as an RPG is debatable.

Richard Garriot published his first RPG in 1979. I don't know if that was the first one ever, but it certainly was a RPG.

Temple of Apshai is another early contender from 1979. A game that spectacularly failed to grab my attention wheb I encountered it a year or two later on a TRS-80.

Wouldn't Rogue be the very first computer RPG?
