Tech Sucks

Haha, all you engineers and computer cats got all mad and came here to ridicule me, suckers.

Actually, you probably hovered a preview and knew better by now, but now I've taken the wind out your sails by acknowledging that, too. Ha HA!

Anyway, I'm sitting in my 13th hour of the first tech process for a musical production. I'm the media board operator/design assistant (or as I like to call myself, fetch monkey.) That means that I sit here the whole time waiting for the brief moment for my cues to be called so I can hit the space bar. I'm the assistant, so I don't even fix problems, just throw my hands up when one happens. Fortunately there is wireless here. But that has provided limited entertainment. Even the designer I'm working for has been passing the time playing games on his computer.

If I wasn't a fetch monkey I'd be getting paid an assload to do this now. But I'm a fetch monkey, whoring myself for a reference and experience. And I'm bored out of my skull. The first part of my day was absorbed catching up with the stuff I was supposed to have fetched by now, but now I just listen to fractions of songs. And I hate musicals.

In my actual career (That is-the thing I really want to do for money vs. jobs I could have got when I was 18) this is the most boring part.

What is the most boring part of the thing you actually want to do?

Editing. I hate it. I hate it with a passion. At least, editing my own stuff. Editing the stuff of others is much more fun and a darn sight more cruel.

And you're absolutely right. Tech sucks. But remember: bad tech, good opening.

Never heard that one.

I actually like editing, but only the editing-not the logging, not the capturing, not sorting the bins-just the editing. There is a zen like quality to it. Plus, you are no longer trying to get subjects/actors to do anything. You get to move them where ever you want and have them start when you want.

AHHh, 3 minutes to the end and suddenly their running a bunch of media cues. I think this is the first show that the stage manager has called with media. She's getting the hang of it no problem, but she's nervous. And this is the first time I've used this system. Fun times. Woo Hoo! It's over 'til tommorrow....!!!!
