The Americans entered the war purely to benefit hollywood - so hollywood could take true stories, and change all the british characters into americans.

Now that would also explain why Hitler allied with Italy (who´d want Italy as ally anyway? With allies like them you don´t need enemies anymore. ;) ).
His vegetarian dishes requires large amounts of Italian oil! :D

It's funny that you should mention oil and WWII... because, jokes aside, the question of oil was very important in WWII. Japan was industrializing... and had no native reserves. The US oil embargo was a critical issue going into the war, and the distribution of oil supply a critical concern within the war.
Had oil not been an issue, Japan might have never attacked Pearl Harbor.
It is all related.

That's all well and good, but have you tasted salad with light crude drizzled over it. :(

An embargo that wouldn't have existed if the Japanese hadn't been in a war with China...

As was pretty well everyone one else! It was the in thing to do. If you doubt me, read up on the Opium Wars, the Boxer Rebellion and the Open Door policy of the world colonial powers.

Open door policy was to keep China free... thats more of an anti-thesis to your point.
I hate to tell you this, but a large chunk of WWII actually was about oil, and the US did become involved because of oil. Unfortunetely it wasn't the US looking for new supplies of oil, but Japan. In fact Japan would have left the US alone if not for the fact that they wanted oil and the US enforced an oil embargo on Japan. Yes it is true, Japan attacked the US for oil.
Agreeing with the above, most of our airstrikes in Japan were intended to destroy any oil capability they might have had, the reason why there was at one point a Japanese bicycle force (or so I've heard, I'm too lazy to properly verify this).

It's kind of futile to try to get inside FDR's mind 64 years after the fact. Oil played an important role, but the fact that Japan bombed our ships anchored in our waters and Germany and Italy declared war on us was probably more at the forefront of our leaders' minds when they went to war.
