It is a sci-fi novel and i am sending my characters to a futuristic mining planet and i need a name for it.

Does anyone on here have any ideas?

It has to have a ring to it.

I like some of the ideas put forward.

I had an idea for it:

Ologost. but i realised i all ready used it for the characters alpha aite.

Traditionally, planets are named after deities (traditionally Roman, but might expand to other mythologies if enough are discovered).

Given that it's a mining planet, I'm thinking mining-> heavy industry-> forges-> Vulcan.

Traditionally yes but the planet is in a different galaxy in a far off part of the universe.

the inhabitants would have named the planet.

Very technologically advanced

they have a huge fecking defence system for their planet.

what are the miners... Criminals, low paid hands, corporate flunkies...

the planet can have multiple names. one that the govenment gives it and one that the inhabitants (miners) give it.

People can work out the pronunciation (roughly). it wouldn't be my leet us, though - thats an English language pronunciation. My guess is more like "mee-let-oos" (based on latin-derived languages).

A little about the environment:

The environment has a lot of mountains and such for mining and it has a floating station where the miners live during their work shifts (which last anywhere up to a month or so) the cities are on the other side of the planet which looks much like Earth in its countryside except it has an untouched, unpolluted feel to it. It has crystal clear lakes. The inhabitants are humans (as millions of years ago humans lived on one planet far off into the universe. this planet is unknown, but my characters seek to find it thus they seek other humans in the universe.)

there is one sun, but this planet provides all other planets with technology as they are allies (the system is frequently attacked) the technology they lend are weather viels. these make the climate suitable for sustaining life.

But language evolves. As the civilisation evolved, so would language, and thus, the name of the planet would alter, even if only slightly.

Besides, the feel of the name affects how a reader feels towards the planet - what kind of impression do you want to give?

Naming A planet eh?

commonly used methods:

Take a word associated with watever your doing and mess it up a bit...

For mining? hmmm....

Gravel= Grevail
shaft= Shaefet

or just combine some words...

Gravel+shaft= Graeft
dirt+shovel= Dirshel

or take a cool language, for example latin, and translate it...

Broken ground=Infractus humus

I'm not sure how good that last one was but you get the idea.

Depending on who is mining what there (and how "unimportant" mining planets usually are), either go for a letter/number combination that looks and sounds good (or spells in h4<k3rc0d3 or whatever) or take a female name (miners are usually males, are they not?) in combination with a roman numeral (to indicate its position in the system which could have the same name?).

Call it L3I4 in the Lando system ;)

Ooh, ooh, I got one with a mini-back story!

The super-rich always claim they got where they were from hard work, right? So, theoretically, they would work hardest in the mines if they thought there was some financial gain greater than playing the markets or whatever. Bear with me here.

The richest people invariably gain wealth with at least some level of shady dealings or downright dealings in organised crime - sure, some make it look legal by sticking the 'good of the empire' behind their greedy foraging, but it all comes down to theft of lands, right? Also, if that doesn't work just use the old 'property is theft' argument to accuse all super-rich folk of crimes. Keep with me, come on...

Now, the super-rich will have ways of getting out of their sentences - slick lawyers, a few bribes, waging war with half the galaxy behind them - so ultimately, no rich person serves a full term in prison for their crimes. The galactic government wants to arrest these people and make them serve their time, but with no effective methods. The solution? This planet, and more specifically, its name. TAX HAVEN.

By calling a planet Tax Haven, the über-rich will be immediately interested. They will want to declare all profits in this place. But a certain planetary 'law' states that the ultimate benefactor of the profits must be present on the planet - but only the benefactors. They won't be happy, but tax free profits will keep them interested.

Next, make up wild stories about the mining of this planet, and the fantastic riches to be made. Plant a few workers there and make it so one of them 'gets lucky' once in a while, thus keeping interest alive. Since only the super-rich can live on this planet, they will see these possible riches as a massive benefit - make it up so this stuff is worth trillions for ounces. The competitive, greedy nature of these people will drive them to work harder. This is the first advantage i.e. you have basically imprisoned these crooks on an horrible, dustbowl of a planet of their own free will. The second advantage is; they are mining whatever there is down there that you wish to mine! Coal, minerals, ore, whatever - as long as it isn't worth much but you can easily turn a profit, it's all good.

So, in summation - call your planet Tax Haven. You can impose sentences on the real galactic crooks whilst turning a tidy profit.

Well an idea might be to give it its offical name first such as

"insert mineral being mined here" plannet sector *** Plantet *** (insert numbers, letters or greek letter names in the *** spaces)

and then give it a more coloquial name that the miners use because of a fameous atribute that planet has

Could do something like that.

here is a little more back info on my book :

There is a small order of 12 creatures who were the original creators of their respective race.
These 12 are called apon in times of need eg. a possible chance of universal war which the Vercetai bring (the alien race in my book) however 11 of the 12 have to remain dormant so other cannot sense their energy and find a location for them, as they are to powerful togeher. one of them stays awake, the reason he is doing this is because one of the 12 fell in battle, the human creator. The 1 that is awake is tracing one of my main characters (Col. Balhaar) through the universe to try and sway him to thier cause.

the alien finds him on this planet which we are naming and their is a chase through the mines resulting in one of my characters being killed by the creator (he is the Vercetai representive of the 12). thats all i am saying, but i have alot in store for the characters.

Hey, I just thought of something! You can use the names of real planets as named by the inhabitants. Ex. "Tythanios" = Mars to the rest of us; "Kalkéthion" = Io; "San Jovia" = Aurora... you know.
