How much education have you received?
What were/are you studying?
What did/do you want from it?
What have you achieved with it?

I have attained my high school diploma and I’ve just finished my first year at university. I’m majoring in philosophy, however, I hope to switch to the Humanities.

So what about you?

I have a high school diploma and have finished one year of college. I was studying English with a concentration in journalism with a minor in international studies until I decided to take a year off to re-evaluate my life and education. I wanted to become a journalist but now I don't know what I want to do with my life or my education. So far I haven't used much from my year at college in the real world and the work I do, well, it doesn't really matter much that I have a high school diploma.

I took business administration in undergraduate school, with a concurrent major in political science and minors in public speaking and economics. My masters is in industrial relations and organizational development. My undergrad degree enabled me to enter the Army as a college option for Officer Candidate School. Both degrees stood me in good stead when I was working for GE and then Exxon as an Employee Relations Manager.

I'm currently working on my Ph.D. Through a quirk of subject matter and relevancy, my Ph.D. will be a self-designed program in education. I'll be focusing on the interrelationships between the use of technology in learning, the role of tutoring, and home schooling support systems.

I intend to use my Doctorate to start a consultancy for people setting up home schools, including recommended technology, assisting with tutoring, and design of curricula.

I finished my third year of an honours physics programme at McMaster university.
At this point, I don't think I'm going to proceed in physics, I just want my bacelor's and to get out, then I will likely go for a bachelor's in philosophy or psychology at the same school or go to teacher's college for my BEd and teach highschool.
I haven't done much with my education, it got me more money in one of my summer jobs last year, my boss was impressed by the honours physics so he paid me more even though it was a catering job, which has nothing to do with physics.

How are things in Cheney? I went to college in Ellensburg. Eastern Washington is a great place for an education. The cow shit smell in Ellensburg has diminished significantly since Shockey's rendering plant closed in about 1996 or so.

Diploma @ Lake Stevens High School, Lake Stevens, WA; 1988
Associate of Arts & Sciences @ Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, WA; 1991
Bachelor of Music in Education, Minor in Traffic Safety @ Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA; 1995
Master of Music in Conducting @ CWU, Ellensburg; 2003

Lots of in-between stuff. I taught at a public high school from 1995-1998, did three years as a civil servant (Snohomish County Auditor's Office in both Licensing and Recording divisions -- I needed the money and the bennies were outstanding...never paid a dime for health care) 1998-2001. Now I'm looking to use my degree to feed my soul and teach choral music at the HS or CC level and pair it with using my left brain's writing, editing and proofreading skills to make actual money. So far, it's been a fairly fruitless search. I have a part-time gig as a scorer for the new SAT essay section for Pearson Educational Measurement in Auburn, WA and I teach one choir as PT faculty at Edmonds CC. I am not drowning, but I am treading water right at the nose-line.

At least I'm no longer a civil-servant wage-slave. It paid handsomely with the aforementioned bennies, but I needed therapy for 18 of the 36 months I was employed there. I was biting the heads off of friends and loved ones and generally depressed all the time. The therapist "discovered" that I hated my job and needed to get out. WELL, DUH! It's a damn good thing it was only a $10 co-pay per visit to THAT observant fellow. So now I'm broke, but in control of my emotions. Jury's mostly out on whether or not I regret that trade. I usually don't regret it until I see that my friends are all in their mid-30s like me and have families and houses and cars built in the same decade we're currently in. I'm not materialistic, but I'd like to not have to pray every time I write a check.

So there's a precis of my education, both in school and in life. The former costs you money and is of questionable worth, the latter is of inestimable worth but costs you money AND sanity.

And yet you typed a space between "any" and "thing" along with writing a sentence that is awkward and reads poorly.

Now that doesn't mean you're uneducated, you could just be tired.

However, a post like yours is provocative, and dare I say deliberately so. As this thread has pointed out, education isn't all that important compared to how it's used.

I studied something about business and marketing in University. Got the degree and everything. Mostly useless now. I'm doing something totally unrelated. Probably will be doing something very different a couple of years from now, when the stuff I'm learning now will be mostly useless.

I have achieved a couple of things with that education, but it's pretty irrelevant by now. They don't teach you the important stuff in Universities anyway.

I graduated as Dux of my high school back in 2001 in Lesmurdie, Western Australia. I had decided that since I was very much interested in space exploration and research and had the marks for it, why not give engineering a go and try and help out. Graduation was too late in the year to sit for the SAT, and the states would've been too far for a bloke on his own the first time, so I looked at Engineering schools across the country.

Hence, I am now in the fourth year of a five year combined program at Sydney University, cranking up 5 and a half grand of HECS debt a year, studying Aerospace Engineering and Advanced Physics with a decent scholarship to keep in food other than tinned shite. It's fun, challenging, rewarding, lets me tinker with cool stuff and gives me a host of job options after graduation that are not within my filed of study, unfortunately.

Been thinking about post-grad stuff, maybe a masters or PhD, but I've already got one thesis looming on the horizon as it is. I'll see what I think after I've done that bastard.

Oh well, they say you only use about 20% of your education out in the real world, most of which probably comes out as literacy, numeracy and learning the fact that it's not a good idea to tell the boss/teacher/supervisor/self appointed god of all they survey what you really think about them.

I agree that uni is not for everyone and believe that some subjects would probably be taught better at a technical college, such as nursing. However, universities are also useful for undertaking pure research and paying bright sparks to sit around all day and think up ingenious new ways of doing things, such as this whole internet thing. It was originally taken from a secure data network in the U.S. military, and then copied by the academic establishment to allow the sharing of large data files between remote locations. So, saying that unis should be abolished on an internet discussion forum is a little bit silly. This however does not detract from the worthiness of technical institutes; my mum (former registered nurse) used to teach child care workers, elderly care workers, teacher's assistants and people who wanted to be nurses but didn't do the right subjects in high school, didn't finish high school, had turned 40 and wanted a new career etc. She mainly taught human development (both physical and psychological) throughout a person's life, applied microbiology and basic applied psychology, as it applies to getting rowdy kids to settle down after lunch.

As you can plainly see from this, and every other post in this topic, there is a broad variety of people here, and saying that your education is superior to anyone else's is just plain silly. I know a man with a PhD in applied mathematics who can't balance his finances.

4. What have you achieved with it?

1. i got 6 A's and 5 B's at GCSE level, and grades A (Economics), B (Physics), C (Biology) and D (Chemistry  ) at A-level from King Edward VI School in Southampton. my friends and i used to love winding up americans on chat rooms by telling them that our school is older than their country:p

2. thats what i studied. then went to uni and failed a year of Economics Bsc (remove the "c" in BSc and you have what it was...;)). Am now trying Politics, but i'm probably going to fail that too:(

Studying Early Modern History, compartiment Cultural history at the University of Antwerp - my last year, dissertation is killing me :p
I wanted to become a better person through education, and I wanted to become more wise in general. And I think it's going good on both accounts...
I've achieved a higher degree of knowledge, observation and tolerance - on both myself and the world in general. And I've found out what I really want to do - investigate how the world works, and not to benefit from it (like those damn economic masters, evil I say, evil!) but to make others benefit from it - I know it sounds lame to most, but that's what makes me happy, that's what interests me. What can I say, I'm a buddhist...
PS More people should do humanities - the world would be a better place...

How much education have you received? Just finishing my first year in College
What were you/are studying? Computing AS and GCSE English (I failed it at school :()
What did/do you want from it? Not sure, I just know I want some sort of computing job.
What have you achieved with it? More geeky friends like myself, Office job at work after only working there for three days. (I work Sundays, as a warehouse op, but first I get sent upstairs to process any orders that got sent through on Saturday, on SunOS 5.6) :D

Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Laws
Started Grad Diploma in Legal Practice but had to quit because I got sick & decided I don't really want to be a solicitor in any case.
Thinking about doing a Masters in maybe a couple of years. Will probably go into either Government (Policy) or Academia. Not in any hurry though.

Wow, an amazing way to utilise education. Boast about it.

If this thread was entitled "how good are you at sport?" I doubt you would have written a similar post.

We tolerate - nay, encourage - elitism in every other sphere of human endeavor. Why should education be any different?

I've a first class BA Hons in Psychology, currently in my first year of a grad research programme. This morning I'm demonstrating my lab to potential undergrads.

Educated beyond all possability of employment. They should scrap education and replace it with training, scrap universities and replace them with technical colleges.

You're never too educated to teach.

Incidently, the point of education is not money. If a large bank account is your only goal in life, then there isn't any reason to go past 6th grade.

Tell me about it - now that the economic liberals are getting their way, there are schooltrips to banks and all kinds of companies, and no longer to museums! I've met a 16year-old kid yesterday (probably a one-time case, but still) who didn't know who Peter Paul Rubens or Amadeus Mozart was, but insisted that Hitler used to lead a bad company that couldn't make ends meet at the end of the quarter, and that he would've done a lot better because he had an A for economics, "and after all, isn't that all we need to make it in life?"! I've heard other money-hungry kids, but none other was so eloquently ignorant about what really makes up a society, namely culture as a whole.

Why? Technical colleges suck. I want to learn something interesting, not sit at a computer and be a drone. Who cares if it's employable, it's learning and it's still good and important for a person to do.

This exactly why I'd like to see Tech colleges separated from real universities. I sat through too many classes full of drones who didn't want to be there and were bored, because the powers that be have seeming decided an education can force people to think.

(I may need to go and open a thread on this again, before I hijack this one too much further. ;))

Me?

I just finished my first year at Ohio State as a political science/international relations major, with a german (possibly) minor. But I have had sophomore standing since December.

I graduated with honors from one of the best public high schools in my state.

I'm a freshwoman in a boarding school, in CT.

Courses: English, Latin, Math(Trig), A rather strange history course in which we are learning about seemingly random countries (Brazil, The Congo, India, and South Korea), Biology, and a course called WISE (Women In Science and Engineering) where we are mostly learning some programming.

My grades are pretty good, but I have no idea where I want to go to college or what I want to do.

Still in Secondary School taking English Lit, English Lang, Maths (+Statistics), Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Socioogy, Art, Health & Social Care, Food Tech and French GCSEs along with the compulsory RE/Philosophy and Ethics and PE.

I plan to take Psychology, Health & Social Care, Maths, English Lit and perhaps something else for my A Levels/ AS Levels and do a Psychology Degree.

I was brought up in a fairly well educated family, read from a young age etc. In our last reports I got the highest overall average and I'm getting A*s in the various Sciences, Statistics, English and Health and Social Care. I have exams next week and will see where I stand in the rest of my subjects.

I want to be able to become a psychologist or therapist... something along those lines. I find the mind very interesting and also enjoy helping people deal with problems. I enjoy learning and exploring new concepts and theories, enjoy Art and enjoy creative writing and am in the midst of writing a story while also writing poems.

I received extensive formal training in the Air Force in avionics (aviation electronics) and teaching.

My BS is in General Studies with a major in Business.

My MS is in Education with a major in Occupational and Adult Education.

I'm currently employed as an Aircraft Materials Acquisition Engineer for a flight simulator manufacturer.

I will retire in 4 years, four months, and 9 days, but who’s counting. :D

Detail:

Top 8% of high school class
30 ACT

BA-Journalism, University of Wisconsin-Madison

630 GMAT

Master of Business Administration, Belmont University

99th Percentile ASVAB (wanted to get a commission and help the US effort in some way, but asthma as a kid pretty much nixed that idea).

The master's degree taught me basically how to run a business, from finance to accounting to marketing to operations to human resources. In addition, we had to take this awful Info Technology class, so I know a little about that area too.

How much education have you received?
Several years of college

What were/are you studying?
Computer Science - Software design

What did/do you want from it?
Game design

What have you achieved with it?
Absolutely nothing

After about 5 years of college, I burned out. Back then, if you said you wanted to learn how to make games, people laughed at you. So I took the classes that taught -something- towards my goal. That worked till I got to the point where I had to take all the other classes I had been avoiding...

Is that supposed to be an excuse? It was 2am for me, so what?

Look, if you make a post that brags about how smart you are and it's error-filled and hard to read, you paint a bullseye on yourself.

Well, got my HS diploma... hooray. Going into my third year at the University of Texas at Dallas and trying to go for my BA in Government and Politics. But this is something I'm using to jst study for fun. After I finish, I'm going back again to get really serious and try pre med again. I tried once, but failed miserably, so I figure I'll use political science (which is far more interesting than Biology, despite the fact that being a doctor is something I have wanted to do for about 15 years and is still something I want to go for) to grow up, and develop better study habits... we'll see how it goes.

Done GCSEs (10 of them, all good grades), A Levels (Maths, Music, Physics, oh and an AS in Electronics), currently doing a BA(Hons) in Popular Music and Recording. Sounds a bit like a waste of a degree but trust me it isn't! It's much harded than I expected.

Once I've finished my degree I'll either bum around for a few years, travelling or something, do a Postgrad course, or get a job (hopefully in sound engineering or something similar)
