Garden State movie, take 2

I saw the movie Garden State for the second time a few days ago, and I was left rather annoyed. The first time, I loved it, but this time around it was just a bit too preachy, a bit too artsy, a bit too sappy, a bit too predictable, a bit too earnest, and just a bit too much generally.

Did anyone else have the same thing happen?
Does anyone else have movies that they love and then realize that they're, well, a bit lame?

That happens occasionally.

The problem with Garden State was structure. He does have a good eye and a sense for imagery, but he used a hammer with the scripting. The love interest became too much of an actual love interest and too quickly without any real complication. Most importantly, that movie should have ended when they yelled into the chasm. The thing with the father would have had to be reworked, but it should have been reworked anyway.

This is a lesson that should have been learned from The Graduate. It's as if they continued after the bus ride to the platitudes they tell each other before thier eventual breakup as the sizzle from the situation dies away and they find themselves to be an embarasing reminder of past descressions(sp)...wouldn't have been as good a movie.

I hope Braff gets another shot, but I hope he takes as much time with the script next time as he did with the shots this time.

yes I think you're right. The entire bit after the chasm-shouting was pointless. Please, I any of you make movies, don't have making-out-in-the-airport scenes.

I haven't seen The Graduate, perhaps I shall.

I enjoyed the movie and have it on dvd. The dvd comtains some very good scenes that were cut under time pressure. If they had been included I feel the movie would have flowed better and not seemed as forced. All in all, though - not bad for a rookie film-maker.

I'll keep it in mind.

Run, don't walk. But keep in mind that it has a slower pace and development than modern movies. And the ending is something that we need to come back to in film. That ending and the ending to The Conversation are two of the best endings in film. Heaven's Gate screwed us...
