Canadian elections?

When exactly is the vote in commons going to take place that could force an election?

I am personally indifferent to whether there is an election or not. On one hand, Stephen Harper is a dick and really, I would rather have someone who is corrupt (Martin, apparantly) in power than a bigot (Harper), however, my current place of employment will not get me enough money for tuition by September, but if an election is called, then I can work 7 days a week and stand a chance at doing so.

There's been a lot of talk about bringing down Parliament May 18 or 19, with an election for June 27 or so.
I think Martin wants to call it early, too. Better to campaign by saying Harper cost us all the good funding levels than to campaign later, when he's had two years of doing nothing.
For what it's worth, if Ontario puts the Liberals in, I think the other provinces should have the ability to veto. I'm from Ontario and it makes me crazy how we can't ever seem to vote strategically. I can only imagine what it's doing to the rest of the country.

The vote on the budget is a motion of confidence. If it doesn't passes, then election are called. That'S the earliest possible time for the government to fall.

Then there's a motion of non-confidence that is underway but will be voted upon later. About a month later.

I think this country needs a Conservative government again. Besides, Paul Martin has proven that his minority government isn't reliable. I'm sure the Conservatives are going to do a better job than the Liberals would. Both parties are more or less centrist anyway. Stephen Harper looks cooler than Paul Martin too :D

The liberals are centrist, the conservatives are a tad frightening, however, they would likely end up with a minority government as well if they were to win and would be largely ineffective.

The only thing I would like to see the liberals do before getting kicked out is pass the whole gay marriage thing. Harper will just keep putting it off until he's out of office. Once it's passed, there won't be much he could do though.

Oh for the love of...

Just because someone is labeled a 'Conservative', doesn't mean they are pro-big business, homophobic, xenophobic, war mongering, and just about every other stereotype you associate with 'Conservatives'.

Unfortunately, it seems that everyone west of Quebec and east of the Manitoba border thinks this about Stephen Harper and the Conservatives. In fact, it seems that they LOVE Paul Martin more than ever (according to the polls, anyways), even though he was involved in Adscam.

Geez, do easterners love to get mugged? Do they want corruption?

Personally, I don't agree with all of the Conservatives views. My view on gay marriage is to let the gays have the same legal rights as married couples if they choose and let them deal with whatever spiritual consequences that will erupt on their own, but let the churches have a say in whether or not they will marry gay couples. That sounds reasonable, right? Then why are the Conservatives still saying no? And their love of big business. Big business doesn't want to help anyone but themselves... so why are we giving them tax breaks? Look at Bombardier... they're one big tax break! Major money pit!

But I do like the Conservatives stronger views on world politics and the military....

My point is, I don't agree with everything the conservatives have. In fact, if I knew that the Liberals would actually do what they say in their elections, I would vote for them. But they don't. Liberals routinely lie to us, steal from us, and give us nothing but stagnation. Canada has been systematically rotting, from defense to education to health care because the Liberals didn't strengthen them (though they promise to).

But I know that if I vote Conservative... THEY WILL ACTUALLY DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So please, vote conservative. Stop griping about how 'conservative' they are and vote for them. What's your other choice... Liberals?

Naw, Martin will delay. He already is delaying. He begged the country to wait until the whole Adscam thing gets finished, which will be November. Typical Liberal tactic... delay and let their Ontario ridings that put them in power forget.

I agree. Give us the right to veto. Or at least give us an electable senate to act as a regional balance.

Oh, and you don't have to imagine what an Ontario run government is doing to the rest of the country. Read some papers in the west, and you'll find out that us westerners are p*ssed off, especially the Albertans, who feel they are propping the country up singlehandedly without so much as a thank you.

For the record's:

Our parlement is composed of 307 members. The party with the most members got the power to write legistlation and budget, but they need the majority of the parlement (154 members) to make it pass.

Rigth now we have:
-132 Liberals
-99 Conservative
-54 Bloc
-19 NPD
-3 Independent

Paul Martin plan has been to give NPD's Jack Layton big social expense in the budget so he would vote for it, wich Layton will do. Now, if you make the count, 132+19 make 151, wich meens Martin still need the 3 independents to get the vote. We can guest he will find "good" argument to convince them. Anyway, these 3 have nothing to win but all to lose in a election.

The moral is Martin will be able to hold elections until he want, but he will have to do it in the next year since he does'nt have the money to achieve is goal while pleasing the NPD.

The situation actually leads to ridiculous situation. There's is a WWII remembrance week rigth now in holland and everybody's scared to go in fear of a vote will theire gone since the majority hold in one hand. Martin accepted to go 1 day and screwed is oppoment by trowing at them an invitation to join him. So they "kind of" have to go because of the media pressure.

Yeah, in terms of democraty, it is actually scary to see a country "run by one province"
