Gibson Les Paul Standard, of course. But, Fernandes makes one that looks just like a Les Paul, is lots cheaper, and sounds even better. Forgot the name... Steve Jones plays them.

By the way, if you can't afford a Gibson, Gibson has a company which makes considerably cheaper but still very good guiters. Their name is Epiphone.

Depends on what you're going for.

On the whole, I am a Gibson man, myself. I like the action of a Gibson.

The main difference in playability between the SG Supreme and the Les Paul standard is the string offset. The SG gets a better tone, but the LP has smoother action. On the whole, I'd rather go for tone.

The Jackson line is a wonderful line all around, but the Rhodes reigns supreme in tonality and sustain. To quote from This is Spinal Tap, "I could pluck a note and walk away and have a bite, right, and come back and it would still be goin'"

The Warlock has power and holds its bite through all manner of effects and distortion, so it's the way to go if you're going for hard metal - though the Rhodes has cleaner pickups standard.

The Gretsch semi-hollow is a fine folk/country guitar and also great for old time rock and roll. It doesn't hold well on effects beyond a mild flanger, but I've seen a couple of guys do amazing things with a Gretsch and a phase shifter.

My advice: get them all.

My final vote, though, goes to the SG Supreme. All around, it is the most versatile and best guitar on your list for a varity of styles. Though the Jackson Rhodes is a close, close, close second.

I can't stand the neck of Gibson's; I prefer the Tele. Other than that, I might go with a semi-hollow. Maybe a Gretch.

I take it you don't play jazz then? :)

A lot of blues/rock players complain about the neck of the Gibson is why I ask.

There was a brief period where it was possible to buy Gibsons made by Epiphone and Epiphones made by Gibson IIRC.

I'm a rock/punk/metal guitarist. Guitar isn't my instrument too much. I'm more of a drummer, then a bassist. I'm competent though, and I play in some bands on guitar.

My all time favorite guitar is Juanita. Juanita is my 1964 Gibson Dove accoustic.

However, since this is for guitarists, here is my list of top 5 all time best electric guitars ever made (from a jazz/folk players perspective):

5. Ibanez GB200
4. Jackson PC-1
3. Gibson L-5
2. Gibson Le Grande
1. Ovation Viper (I know, it's accoustic-electric, but deal with it)

Woo! Lists!

My soul resides in the bass, but my first love was guitar. I am also a drummer ... I'm no Neil Pert, but I bet I could give Keith Moon a run for his money.

Well how good are you? Send a demo? Unfortunately, the market is saturated with male drummers right now. If you're really good, though, you can get a deal. You're in luck, however, because you'll only be competing with idiots who saw "Drumline" and think it's cool to slap themselves in the face with sticks.

Edit: Though we are, technically, hijacking. I made a drummer's thread.

Hmmmm...SG.

But really, the guitar i'd most want is probably a Maton...awesome tone, they look cool, and they're Australian, which means that they're comparatively cheaper for me. Gibsons are ridiculously overpriced, particularly for a left handed model, which I need. I'd be looking at $4000, probably. Epiphones are OK though. They're under $1000, so i'd consider one.

Right now I use a Cort, heh.

While I regard the Les Paul to be the superior instrument, I prefer the SG for its lightness and ease of movement. If I've got a Les Paul strapped to my shoulder for more than 40 or so minutes, my shoulder feels like it wants to seperate.

Having at one time played on all of these except the Warlock (Becuase I think BC Rich's are crap)

I'd take the SG.

Hands down.

The Les Paul is the better instrument for most sounds, but when you want lots of distortion or a really heavy sound, the Les Paul doesnt always deliver.
The SG, is a monster.

Very lightweight too.
In fact the neck seems to weigh more than the body does.

1. Ovation Viper (I know, it's accoustic-electric, but deal with it)

I never see Ovation guitars around here...but I would almost kill for an Ovation Ultra GP based on the awesome tone it has. Pity they only made a couple of hundred, and they are really sought after...and I bet none of them were left-handed.

i didnt vote, but if i had to play any of those guitars, id choose the SG, but this is beside the point because i really dont like the look of most gibson guitars, especially the les paul. yes of course are excellent instruments with highs and lows, but id much rather play my telecaster, they just look much better. in my opinion.

The '69 Reissue is one SICK guitar. I used to have a Les Paul Standard. I also have had a Martin 00016GT accoustic (my suggestion If you want an accoustic), I now have an SG.

Where's the Fender Telecaster? It's a brilliant guitar and looks cool too. Plus Im getting one soon.

So I ended up voting for a Gretsch Hollowbody (Nashville), though I don't mind the SG but I don't see the attraction of the Les Paul.

Those are good options. I have a Squier (by Fender) Stratocaster as well as my bass, which is of unknown brand. There is a guitar that I'd love to have. the Peavey EVH Wolfgang. It's designed by Eddie Van Halen. Unfortunatley, it would cost me about 3 months salary!

you people are all missing the most important invention by man since sliced bread: The Fender American Strat. Ok, maybe it isn't necessarily more important than the Les Paul Standard, but it definitely is on the same level. I love my Strat and I don't know if I could ever have a better all around guitar. All of the guitars on the survey are amazing axes, and I've played all of them, but I just love my Strat the best.

The only problem is, everyone has one, so you end up with an unfortunately somewhat generic sounding tone (depending on other equipment though). I wouldn't sneeze at a Strat, but considering the price they are over here, i'd rather search for something a bit more distinct.

I personnaly think that a generic sound is due more to a lack of skills on the part of the guitar player, and not the equipment. I think that the Strat has one of the most distinct tones out there. And come now, obviously not everyone has one, no need for gross overstatement tyring to prove a point. I think only one or two other posters have talked aboiut owning a Strat, and one was a Squier (which really doesn't count in the whole scheme of things).

I'd have to agree that the Strat should have been included. While I personally don't care for them (I think they sound kind of "tinny"), they are classics in the guitar genre. Just like you have to include The Rolling Stones (someone I don't care for) in a list of classic rock acts, you have to include the Strat in a list of classic guitars.

I play a Carvin by the way. I've been playing since I was 8 (I'm 37 now), and my first electric was a Gretsch Diamond Anniversary hollow body. I've been told this baby is worth some $$$, not that I'd ever sell it! Glad to see so many others taking up the "craft". Keep jamming guys!

Let me think...

I can think of 5 people I know personally that own Strats, Squier or standard. (Including my guitar teacher). Apart from that, I know one Ibanez player, one Telecaster player, and one Les Paul player. 'Twas an overstatement, but quite an obvious one. Of course, not *everyone* owns one, but comparatively, they are extremely popular. The majority of local bands I see have Strats. They're basically the industry standard, at least here. As a result, Strats sound very samey to me. In fact, the marketing slogan of the Squier Strat is "The world's most popular electric guitar." (http://www.derringers.com.au/prod_images/Stratpac.jpg)

I'm not saying they are bad guitars. They are certainly quite good in terms of manufacturing quality, but stupidly overpriced (a fault with Gibson guitars as well). A Fender Strat here will range from $1500 (Mexican made) to around $2500 (Typical U.S. Made), with some models going over $5000 Source (http://www.derringers.com.au/asp/derringers.asp?prod=fs&offset=15). Japanese models are somewhere in-between. A left-handed model will pad that price by as much as 30%. I'd probably prefer a Jazzmaster or Telecaster (If i'm sticking to Fenders, which I probably wouldn't, even though I like the sound of Tele's) for that little bit less. A Squier is about $500, but i'll stick with my Cort, which is worth about the same and I regard it as a far superior performer for the price range.

Of course, you *can* overcome the generic tone problem by slapping on an obscure distortion pedal. :p
