Pretty much what I was going to say. Africa is in such a horrible state today because the imperialists not only drained the resources and enslaved the population, but they then pulled out on a week's notice. That's like a mother pampering and doing everything for her child for 35 years, and then suddenly kicking him out saying "you're on your own now". Chaos ensues.

But then again, does that mean you're responsible for European imperialism? Is it your fault that the Dutch cut off the hands of thousands living in the Congo? Did you cause the British to beat unarmed Indians? Of course you didn't. So where the hell do you get off pinning American problems on me?

it would be about freeing the slaves actually.... what is your point? My point was simply that Europe is no more a "good" or "bad" place if you look at accurate and objective history from the Third World point of view than the USA or Russia.

If you look at past history, there are NO major powers in the world today that have not at one time or another invaded or conquered a weaker region or nations.

The US was pretty imperialistic from 1890 - 1933 in Latin America, and Americans (including large numbers of European immigrants and before that people who were legally either British or Dutch or French or Spanish) conquered North America from the Native Americans

Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the UK, Italy, Portugal, and Spain all had colonial empires that were in each case larger in land area than their homelands. The Belgium occupation of Belgian Congo was so brutal that the Belgian government had to take it away from the Royal Family or face intervention by other European powers who found Belgian tactics horrific even by 19th Century standards.

Europeans started the slave trade, and the US ended the legal importation of slaves in 1808, a record only the British can claim to better. Actual slavery of course continued, but Napoleon got rid of Slavery for the French, and the British and Spanish didn't outlaw slavery until about the 1830s.

Brazil was the last American (north or south) nation to end slavery in 1867 because of British pressure.

No American nation (north or south) has ever made the murder of millions of people an official act of government policy.

the bottom line is that without slavery there would not have been the sectional differences that could only be resolved by a Civil War... officially or not, its why the Civil War occured.

No... slaves were a reason the war startes but it was STARTED by the south, so it was not over slaves. But over states rights and to preserve the union.

I wonder why this whole discussion is focusing so much on history. I
would bet that the most of us here were born some time after Spain
conquered the Americas, slaves were traded and probably even after
Belgium left the Congo (which has since then not had that great
improvement either, I could imagine that hands are being cut off in the
area all the same...). But for pretty much all of us, let's face it, our
opinion on the subject is based on what happened more recently, and then
we looked at history to justify our view.

Now I'm German, although living in australia for nearly four years now,
so I guess I may be a little bit biased.

Inherently all humans are the same I would say. If we grow up in a
culture, we act according to its customs, be that owning slaves, cutting
off hands or hooting and hollering when we see the pictures of yet
another cruise missiles hitting its target. So, it shouldn't surprise
that the Americans didn't do anything different to the Europeans in the
earlier days. Annexation was pretty common in the new world too, be it
Native American nations, be it countries like Panama, be it the
Phillipines or, if I recall correctly, Hawaii.

As to what people like Drunk Commies (Why are communists drunk? How
could they have built an empire of such size and power in a constant
state of drunkenness?) think of Europe, I think it comes from the fact
that I believe Europe finally learnt its lesson. For 2000 years we were
busy shooting, hacking and gassing each other, until 1914, when some got
the message. Others didn't (and im gonna stand in a corner and be ashamed now for another 60 years) and so we did it on even grander scale. and then we got it. and thats why the UN is full of "pussies" and the EU "won't stand up for itself" in the way you think it should.

It comes down to this: the idea that you can kill, maim, overthrow,
triumph over and destroy your enemies until everyone is on your side
clearly hasn't worked. There is always gonna be one that survives and
spawns a new generation of enemies. And words like "freedom" and
"democracy" mean nothing to many people, really. I dare say that while
some had it pretty bad, the majority of Iraqis lived a simple normal
life under Saddam for example, going shopping for groceries, bringing
their kids to school, watching TV on their, admittedly smaller, TVs and
so on. And now in many parts of the country you can't actually leave the
house without fearing for your life. Plus we have another generation of
enemies spawning right now as we are watching. And I'm afraid they don't
distinguish between Americans and Europeans nearly as much as we do.

As for the Chinese, we'll see how they do things in a few years, when they are big and strong enough to do as America does.
