I hope you all have a very safe (http://truemajority.kintera.org/bensbbs), very drunk mexican style day. Let us not forget (http://gregpalast.com/) that this is the day that Jesus saw his first donkey show.

I mean, yes, it's great that the Mexicans turned back the French force sent by Napoleon III to capture Mexico. The force was small and was defeated, but then a much larger one came, captured Mexico City and installed the Archduke Maxmilian (of Austria, younger brother to the Emperor Franz Joseph II) as Emperor of Mexico. He was subsequently killed by firing squad when Mexicans re-won their independence.

Thanks, but I actually wrote that off the cuff. One of my degree is in 19th & 20th century European history, and I've read most of the books on the Habsburgs which have been published in English.

There is remembered that the army of Mexico conquered those of France in 1862 and ended with their occupation in that country. (I don´t know if I wrote it well, we usually speak spanish in Argentina)

My question is why the hell are Americans celibraiting this? What good does a Mexican victory against the French do for the Americans? For that matter, why the hell are Mexican-Americans celibraiting this? If MExico was such a good place , why did they leave to go to the States? Screw Cinco de Mayo, its May 5th. (yes I know it means the same thing, I just prefere how it sounds in FREAKIN ENGLISH!)

I think it sounds much better in spanish. Plus its a great excuse to go get drunk and eat delcious mexican food which is some of the best food int eh world. Besides there are tons of Mexicans in America so that would be a good reason to celebrate their home countries goodness for them. Why can;t someone move to another country and still love their country of origin?

Edit: If I move to Canada or Holland because I think they are super awesome (even though I love America), does that make America a crappy place to live? No, would be teh answer I am looking for here.

I can eat mexican food and get drunk at anytime (infact I make it a point not to drink Corona on this day). And as for the Mexicans in America, no its not okay to have this bloody holiday. Just like its not okay for my kids to learn Spanish when you should be learning English!

If the Indians wanted to keep their country, they should have done a better job defending it-too bad so sad, welcome to evolution. As for the Eggs and presents, that is a religious holiday, not a political one. It's like celibrating thanksgiving in South Africa or the 4th of July in Japan. Its silly

Well, if you want to keep your country, you should do a better job of defending it from immigrants who will one day outnumber you, change the official language to Spanish, and force you to sweep streets, drive cabs, and pick up garbage. Too bad, so sad, welcome to evolution.

um, no they didn't - at least in teh story I heard on NPR - The Minutemen were going thru the whole "I'm not racist " routine while they talked about how those dirty mexicans are ruining American life. And the Border Patrol talked about how it's nice of the minutemen to try to help but they are getting int eh way and setting off their sensors and whatnot and putting themselves in harms way.

Nice thing about Cinco de Mayo is that it's like St. Patrick's Day. On St. Pat's Day, everybody's Irish; on Cinco, everybody's Mexican!

It's actually more widely celebrated in the US than in Mexico, but here in Texas it's serious business. Even the local Thai restaurant is serving burritos and margaritas. :D

I'm sure that there are some racists in their midst. I'm sure there are some racists in the diamond district in midtown, and in Harlem, too. That's an unfortunate reality in humankind. :(

The NPR report I heard (a few weeks back) was that the Board Patrol rank & file were happy they were out there, but that the BP officials weren't.

Also remeber that the Mexican's defeated the french partly through the tactical use of cattle.

"The battle between the French and Mexican armies occurred on May 5 when Zaragoza's ill-equipped militia of 4,500 men encountered the better armed French force. However, Zaragoza's small and nimble cavalry units were able to prevent French dragoons from taking the field and overwhelming the Mexican infantry. With the dragoons removed from the main attack, the Mexicans routed the remaining French soldiers with a combination of their tenacity, inhospitable terrain, and a stampede of cattle set off by local peasants. The invasion was stopped and crushed."

Consequently, the battle did affect the US. By deposing the French, who were supporting the South during the concurrent US civil war, things shaped up the way they did in the north, and allowed the civil war to end sooner than it may have. The US then helped mexico get rid of the french permanantly after a larger force defeated the mexican patriots around 1864, installing Maxilmilian as emperor of mexico.

It's celebrated much more in the US, where it's used by beer companies as an excuse to sell more beer, than in Mexico, where it's a civil holiday to celebrate the Mexican army... on the day of the only international battle that has ever been won by Mexico... and it didn't alter the course of that war much. But, hey! WE WON!

Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! * makes the wave *

Um... I think meant they DEPOSED Maximilian as Emperor in 1867...

Maxmilian became emperor in 1864 with the backing of Napoleon III's (French) Army. After the French abandoned the country in 1867, Maximilian was lost, though he refused to leave Mexico and abandon his followers. He was executed, and Benito Juárez was declared President after him.

(In 1864, the US was still fighting the Civil War, thus their non-involvement.)

Actually, Juárez was the legitimate president before Maximilian. He governed in exile transferring his capital from city to city all the way north to the border with Texas across El Paso, a city known as Ciudad Juárez today.

After Maximilian was deposed he continued his presidency and was reelected twice, I think. Some people didn't like that, although it seems the reelections were legal.

(In 1864, the US was still fighting the Civil War, thus their non-involvement.)
Yup. Even though Lincoln knew about this and the importance of not letting a European power establish a foothold in America again, and that there was a mutual admiration between the two presidents, there was nothing he could do.

It was the wars in Europe that saw the support for Maximilian crumble and allowed the Mexicans to retake the country.
