Tatoos: awesome or retarded?

What do you think? I think they are so stupid they are awesome! I got a sweet pirate tatoo as soon as I could legally get one. Perhaps I'll get more. My ex girlfriend, got a "Weezer" logo on her waist. I laugh at her forever. My lunatic vegan brother got a veal calf trapped in a box tatooed down his leg. It is kind of weird. Two of my friends from college got Grandpa Simpson's "fighting hellfish" tatoo. I was supposed to also get one, but getting a tatoo from a cartoon seemed a little too retarded.

Should you decide to think outside your own frame of mind, you'd realize you'd answered your own question.

However, should you think otherwise, I'll help you out: You basically thought everyone else's tattoo sucked. What stops yours from being "retarded" in 10 years.

More power to you, it'll be a good story for the kids.

Do what you want. Not the answer you wanted, but one the one you're getting.

Some tattoos are cool. I saw one guy with one of a B-17 on the back from WWII. It doesnt sound that cool now but the way it was drawn with the other stuff around it was so fucking metal. But a retarded tattoo... getting some god damn kanji symbol emblazoned on your flesh.

It really depends...
Having them all over the place seems like a waste in my opinion. I think they should be special. *shrug* Therefore, too many means you don't appreciate each one as much.
But I love knowing the story behind them.

I don't think I personally will ever get one, but I would like my future husband to.

Some tattoos are cool, most are retarded. A good tattoo would have to be timeless. Something that never goes out of style. I dont see myself ever getting a tattoo, but I think some of them look good on certain people.

Get your name tattooed on him somewhere you mean? That would rule. I think wedding rings are for sissies. I mean they are nice, but if you are really committed a big tattoo of your name in a heart really says I love you forever, or I'll end up looking stupid till death.

But, tattoos can be interesting, and I don't have a serious problem with them. It also depends on the nature of the tattoo.

I like some tattoos. Depends on the design- whether it works well as a tattoo, how original it is, or isn't, how well it suits the person, placement, skill of the tattooist etc.

For me, at least, permanence was the point. Very few things in life seem to be permanent. People change jobs more often than they used to, there's no security, marriages often don't last, whatever people promise each other...

but a tattoo is forever.

Getting them off isn't that easy. You have to go in for the laser surgery multiple times to get a tattoo off. It just gets lighter and lighter each time.

True, and it's actually both patronising and stupid to assume that everyone with a tattoo eventually wants it removed.

Agreed. Sort of.

Many tatoos are a bad idea because they are not well thought through.

Other tatoos have deep personal meaning and are obtained after careful contemplation of the future.

Both of my tatoos are related to significant personal events, have deep personal meaning to me, are relatively small and/or possible to cover-up, and are tasteful.

I've had one for about 16 years and one for about 11 years. No regrets whatsoever.

I thought they were retarded because they were supposed to freak out the squares -- but then the squares started getting them. I'm about as square as they come when it comes to self-mutilation. I'm of the opinion that what's on the outside of a person doesn't make much difference. The goths, the bikers, the multiple piercers -- you ask 'em why and all they can say is something along the lines of "it's different". Yeah, like everybody else. I think difference, true difference is in the mind and how it affects your actions.

That said, I had a dream back in April of 2000. I dreamt I was getting a tattoo. I never remember my dreams, but the image of the design being needled into my right upper arm somehow burned into my memory. When I woke up (about 3am that night), I sketched it out in pencil and went back to sleep. In the morning, my then-girlfriend saw the design and inked it for me, adding color and a caption.

I place a lot of value on the information and guidance of dreams, and to actually remember one is so rare, that I convinced myself to go get a tattoo using this dream design. I put the decision off in order to fully allow the idea to percolate through all of my reason. Finally, about eight months later, I was still thinking about the design and went to Laughing Buddha on Capitol Hill here in Seattle.

I handed over the inked design and the artist there re-drew it to make it tattoable. I was impressed with his work, and $150 later (art + procedure), I had the artwork that graces my arm today. It's a stylized red heart with an eighth note piercing it from bottom to top. The head of the eighth note is not solid black but is an oval yin-yang symbol. The heart has scars on it, symbolizing the many times the note has passed through it. The caption, in Latin, reads: CANTUS PERFORARE COR ET ANIMUS. A rough translation of "music (specifically vocal music) pierces the heart and soul."

So I guess the moral is this: tattoos are retarded if they're approached without serious (also sober) and lengthy consideration. Other than that, think about it long and hard and knock yourself out. Make it something that's core to your very being and it'll never go out of style or need to be removed -- that is, unless you become Jewish and want to be buried in a kosher cemetary.

It took me about 8 years to decide I definitely wanted a tattoo, what design I wanted, & where on my body I wanted it. But, since getting it done a couple of years back, I've never regretted it. It's one of the best things I've ever bought :)

Tat's are cool. Depending on the tat, if you have like a band name or foootball team done, then you are a retard. You may hate that band or team in three hours time. A tat has got to mean somthing, I want to get a dove holding a rose done on the insdie of my thigh (for reasons of my own) and a quill pen on my chest because I am a writer...and a rose on my wrist...and many many more. I am completly un-tattooed at the moment. Peirced but un-tattooed....too poor :(

It depends on that tat. If you do it after careful thought and because it has a special meaning for you, excellent. If you get one as a lark - iffy. If you do it to be cool and stylish - retard. However, under certain conditions, retard tats can become cool if they aquire significant and personal meaning.

I have numerous friends with tats, including at least five with large parts of their bodies tattooed. Two have large body tat essentially telling the persons life story. Another has several large tats covering his torso and arms each with a significant meaning. Another is a tattoo artist. And the fifth (a Japanese aquaintance) acquired his "ganman" the hard way - traditional Japanese style with bamboo needles. Anyone who knows tattoos or Japan should understand the signifigance...

*nod* Tattooed wedding rings...we're thinking about it.

I know a guy who did that - he couldn't wear rings because he worked with machinery that made it dangerous.

well since i have 4, and 2 more planned-i am going with "awsome"
design wise it is really a matter of taste.

from my personal view i have seen some that are beautiful or unique and others that look like a mess or i find bland.

mine in particular are all coreographed(circular on the shoulders and then the others just below on the upper arm) and are stylized logo's from both science fiction and metal bands
left shoulder-house kurita emblem from classic battletech
left upper arm-thor's winged hammer from the cover art of manOwars album "sign of the hammer"

right shoulder-japanese metal band seikima II's mon(japanese house/family crest)
right upper arm-gothic styled imperial zeon crest from the original mobile suit gundam series(0083 stardust memory)

Lol, I've got a tattoo and haven't shaved my legs. However I might epilate when they come down in price.

Yea...it seriously depends. You get one that you want, not cos it's 'cool'.
In fact with my friends it's probably 'uncool' though I've had a lot of other people say 'did it hurt? you know I always wanted a tattoo....'
And it's very definitely uncool with my parents..."only gangsters have them in China." "But we're not in China." "Still, you got what only gangsters get in China." "Circular argument mum?"

Basically, I wanted a tattoo for years, saw my opportunity in San Francisco hippy quarter and took it. I personally don't like huge tattoos, ones that look scary for the sake of it, or logos/Chinese characters. I don't see why more aren't prettier, you usually only find butterflies if you don't come up with your own design - which you should to some extent.
