i've been playing round with pics of che guvera recently, having started reading one of his published diaries (the Bolivian Diary). the only pic of him you ever see of him, for the most part, isthis one:

http://digilander.libero.it/falcemar/images/wallpaper%20CHE.gif

so i got bored of that and did this

http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/cg/PP0703.jpg http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/cg/PP0703b.jpg

a little more interesting.
and then, inspired also by a lovely pic of tony blair on the cover of a new book i saw in Waterstones, this

http://www.hlj.me.uk/pics/cg/Copy%20of%20Huw010401%202.jpg

Che Guevara (http://www.today.ucla.edu/1997/971010CheShow.html) was a murderer (http://havanajournal.com/culture_comments/2771_0_3_0_M/).

PM, I know you are a communist, but I also know you are a pacifist. Che Guevara was a violent ruthless prick, whether you agree with his views, you would have to be appalled by his methods.

There's a book called Against All Hope: A Memoir of Life in Castro's Gulag. It is written by a poet and human rights activist who served time as a political prisoner in Cuba after stating that he was opposed to communism. He was imprisoned at La Cabana Fortress when Guevara was in charge of it, and he writes about the abuse and execution of political prisoners that went on there.

When a man is a bloodthirsty mass murderer, you wish to see past that and admire his "good" qualities? Reading about him is fine. I read a book recently about Dr. Mengele, but I would be hard pressed to say I admire his advances to medicine considering his routine torture of subjects.

well i admire his conviction, his resolve, bravery and ideals. i think i see alot of me in him, or would like to
i don't go out of my way to research/read up on things very much (wikipedia will usually do), so its a rare thing for me to be interested this much in something. wanting to find out more, and mildly admiring this man is suddenly an inditement (sp?) on my character?

Che Guevara's accomplishment was this man's pain:

Search Order
by Raúl Rivero

What are these gentlemen looking for
in my house?

What is this officer doing
reading the sheet of paper
on which I've written
the words "ambition," "lightness," and "brittle"?

What hint of conspiracy
speaks to him from the photo without a dedication
of my father in a guayabera (black tie)
in the fields of the National Capitol?

How does he interpret my certificates of divorce?

Where will his techniques of harassment lead him
when he reads the ten-line poems
and discovers the war wounds
of my great-grandfather?

Eight policemen
are examining the texts and drawings of my daughters,
and are infiltrating themselves into my emotional networks
and want to know where little Andrea sleeps
and what does her asthma have to do
with my carpets.

They want the code of a message from Zucu
in the upper part
of a cryptic text (here a light triumphal smile
of the comrade):
"Castles with music box. I won't let the boy
hang out with the boogeyman. Jennie."

A specialist in aporia came,
a literary critic with the rank of interim corporal
who examined at the point of a gun
the hills of poetry books.

Eight policemen
in my house
with a search order,
a clean operation,
a full victory
for the vanguard of the proletariat
who confiscated my Consul typewriter,
one hundred forty-two blank pages
and a sad and personal heap of papers
—the most perishable of the perishable
from this summer.

There is nothing wrong with that at all. However, there is such a cult following around Che Guevara, due to the fact that he was a communist, that many large circles of people forget that he was one of the most violent and unsympathetic men of the 20th century. I want to make sure you get both sides.

I did get off on a little Che rant. (I'm a little touchy on some issues)

But your artwork is very good as well. I must say, though, that Che has a much more imposing visage than you did when you were 15.

As I said, nothing is wrong with trying to learn more. It should be commended. But, reread the above quote and pretend we were discussing Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, or bin Laden. All of these men had conviction, resolve, bravery, and ideals. And an admirer of them certainly deserves an indictment of their character.

Notice how an admirer of them is not the same as a student of their history.

He wasn't even a good revolutionary. Tried to stir up revolution in S. America, the people were like "nah", he gets captured and executed.

Oh and the fact that he greatly helped the revolution in Cuba doesn't give him credit?

Do you have any idea of how many revolutionaries are captured and executed without succeeding in one? And how many revolutionaries fought in more than one?

I admire him before he became a violent murderer. His bravery, Conviction and sense of Ideals should not be forgotten, yet neither should his atrocities.

but there are qualities of these notoriously "evil" historical characters that can be admired. not for the evil these men made, but just for having a characteristic of inner strength that i feel i utterly lack. yes there are many more, and more normal, less evil people i could admire, but i'm being irrational and swayed by my socialist policies towards looking past the evil and admiring che for the man, not the actions. i probably sound stupid, but, meh...

I'm not counting Cuba.

Yes, many "revolutionaries" are captured and executed without succeeding in one. That is why they are forgotten, and also they suck, as do their beliefs.

Many "revolutionaries" have successfully fought in more then one.
