Question to the English on this forum.

I have a friend who's most recent hobby is pretending he is from england and trying to convince others that he is. However his accent is unlike anything I have ever heard escape the lips of the few english I know in RL. However all of the ones I know are from London, while my friend makes his imaginary home in Bristol (he claims his accent is totally accurate for being from Bristol), how (dis)similar are the accents, and what are the primary differences?

Question answered, thanks Tink :fluffle:

bristol accents are much different to london accents. it is similar to a welsh accent (which probably doesn't help). it is mainly assosciated with a farmer's sort of accent

^^^ Yup.

Bristol is in Somerset/Wiltshire, and pretty close to Wales.

It's a mixture of a west-country and welsh accent.

Get him to record his voice, and we can judge it :p

I couldn't describe it in writing but they do vary quite a lot. Plus, there are many more accents within the UK than a lot of people from other countries are aware of.

That doesn't help at all, does it?!

There are more accents in the UK than there are in America. Every city has it's own accent here.

I've got a posh western UK accent, but thats been mixed with common south east UK accent over the years. My accent is now apparently... sexy.

But on almost every american show I see, their brits are posh, and play the steriotypical role. It's depressing.

Biccies aren't my thing. Just the tea and perhaps a nice episode of Megas XLR to watch. :D

there are loads of different accents in the UK. I'm from Manchester (so no doubt all that you Yanks know abt Manchester is its best football team [and the best in Britain] - Manchester United (or soccer in your case)), and I have a pretty strong Mancunian accent. I think the best accent in Britain is a Geordie accent tho I do quite like the Manc one aswell.

again, this probably doesnt help...i think the best thing for you to do would be to get on a plane over here and do a whistlestop tour of britain and see for yourself. (And I agree with the comment that there needs to be more northern accents on American TV instead of the quintessential RP accent). no1 but daft ppl or high ranking members of the Establishment speak with an RP accent anymore

Meh, American football is the way to go anyways. (Of course I may be a bit biased having played it for seven years. I even had the oppurtunity to play at a couple of Universities but chose not to)

Liverpool beat Chelsea in an important game last night, which means they are through to play in the final of a European competition

And, being a Chelsea fan, I'm a bit gutted

There are many stereotypes about the British here, most importantly that they're are cultured and refined. Quite the contrary, after being a regular on a mostly British forum, I have learned that they are just as vulgar.

I'ts a common commercial tactic, they always try to create a character with a British accent to sell their product. The thing is, they often get it wrong. It's usually a lower class or Cockney accent.

Then there's always the evil bad guy in movies with a British accent.....
My Irish Great-Aunt definately had that attitude. From a very young age there was a definate influence passed on that British=bad

Chelsea...yeh right...it's taken you fifty odd years to win the premiership (though strictly speaking it wasnt called that before)...and you couldnt win the treble if you tried (erm beaten by another red northwest team in the champions league)...plus it wouldnt have been a proper treble (champions league, FA cup, premier league), cos u were knocked out of the FA cup pretty early on. I'll stop now, tis not really to do with the thread of the conversation, but Chelsea...I hope for your sake you were joking.
