Lately I've been getting into working out and a healthy diet. I have a sedentary job, but it requires alot of socializing, schmoozing and considerable thinking/research. I started to wonder about how many calories I was burning compared to a less intellectual yet sedentary career. I also started thinking about how much we all are burning here.

You will all notice that we burn the MOST when we are learning. That means that if you just post here to flame or chat w folks you agree with you are really not exercising your brain as much as the folks who research not only their opinions, but particularly the opinions of others. I'd encourage all of you to flex your noggin and burn some calories!

IQ can effect energy consumption. After learning a task, lower IQ
people have to exert more energy to complete a task than high IQ
people who have learned the same task.

id say about the same, the lower iq guy may not spend as much energy learning (since its not as intellectual a job) but more energy figuring out every freaking thing in the world that the smarter person takes for granted.

Thats an interesting quote. Essentially lower IQ peoples brains burn more calories than higher IQ peoples brains do on a similar day all tasks being equal. That would break down to the lower IQ people having a more active mind... Counter-intuitive.

I would say the ammount of calories burned with that is insignificant. I mean... when you take it in account, the whole digestion burns calories too, since stomach and other intestines are muscles too and they need energy to do something as well.

We've done this as long as I can remember (read: at least the early 70s).

Cut down a tree or two. Split it, carry it, stack it. Plant two trees for every one you cut.

In the winter, burn it.

Not only do you save on the oil bill, but you get a great workout. ;)
