UN peacekeeping forces use it occasionally, but the reason it wasn;t used before is that it was freakishlyt hard to maintain...and even more expensive to mass produce.....much like the MP44, great gun, but oone had the visioon to use it.

What has power got to do with it? They're made up weapons. I expect there were weapons from Dr Who more powerful than star trek's phasers, but nobody thinks they were more cool, because they were made out of tinfoil and toilet rolls.
The fact is, phasers, including the one you linked to, look like crap.
Blasters, on the other hand, look rugged and formidable, like a weapon should.

Ah, but who wants to be the lucky soldier who gets to catch one? You'd think the redshirts would at least like a trigger guard and some ironsights...
...
And yes, weapons are meant to kill people.
They also represent the highest technology, and the most innovative engineering, of a culture; they are designed to make sure the user wins and the other guy ends up dead rather than the other way around.
Except phasers, which are obviously designed as phalic symbols.

I think Phasers look exactly as they should; prissy, pretentious weapons designed by a prissy, pretentious Federation. That doesn't mean they weren't supposed to be powerful. Look at the contex, and look at your own opinions of the Federation and their ideals. The weapons fit perfectly into the society that was created in that universe.
Even a glittering ceremonial weapon can kill you pretty quick. Some of the old, royal halbreds and pikes that are displayed in castles and museums look rather delicate and few look formidable.

Damn straight, but you do have to remember. The Federation does get down and dirty when they have to. Phasers aren't the only kind of weapons Starfleet uses. I believe at one point they developed a projectile weapon that could beam a duranium slug through walls.

The boomerang is designed either to stun/injure/kill an animal to eat or return to the sender. While a hijacked plane may stun you for an instant as you watch it hurtle towards you, you won't be stunned for long and I can garuntee that no tribe is going to eat your remains. I hardly think you can compare anything in your post to a boomerang, unless it comes back to you...

Well, I'm not arguing merely from the perspective of Star Wars vs Star Trek.
I'd rate the rifles from Aliens above both Blasters and Phasers. I don't care how fancy schmancy the tech specs say something is. It's how it looks and sounds that adds coolness factor in a movie. And really, I don't find phasers all that impressive.

You ar eglossing over the fact that war boomerangs designed specifically for killing or incapacitating the (human) enemy also exist.
Do you have a link/pic? I've never actually heard of a boomerang specifically designed to kill people, although I know they were used in 'war.' I put war in inverted commas because in aborigional culture you could have a war without actually killing people. Anyway, the boomerang was primarily used for hunting (although also used in ceremonies and music).
These days the only people who use boomerangs are sports people (there are several categories, longest flight, most accurate, most returns in under two minutes et cetera).
I am curious if within the last one hundred years there has been a documented report of anyone being deliberately killed by a boomerang?
What has power got to do with it? They're made up weapons. I expect there were weapons from Dr Who more powerful than star trek's phasers, but nobody thinks they were more cool, because they were made out of tinfoil and toilet rolls.

Interesting pictures! (Although wikipedia distinguishes between boomerangs and kylies: boomerangs have a curved flight pattern, where as kylies head directly to the target but they're similar enough) I couldn't find anything conclusive either (so I guess it is safe to assume they haven't killed anyone recently).

Just about the weirdest assault rifle ever (http://world.guns.ru/assault/as62-e.htm)
Oh and I recall seeing a photo of a Russian tank machine gun with a 90 degrees bent down barrel...

How does that look like crap? That's one of the best looking sci fi weapons I've ever seen.

Take a closer look there. Blasters to me don't look formidable at all, they look like peices of primitive crap. They must also be crap due to the fact that storm troopers can't ever hit anything.
Silly Trekkies, Star Wars has the best weapons ever. To point:

I won't get into the ST vs. SW hand weapons issue, but in reference to these two...
#1 is a WWI/II era "broomhandle" Mauser with a dorky flash suppressor and a scope.
#2 is a "Lewis" gun, also WWI/II.
I wonder where Han got his 7.62mm Mauser rounds?

A 7.62x25mm pistol ("mauser" rounds) is infinately more interesting than a flashlight wearing tupperware. So is a Lewis Ground Gun.

Here's another one...I have no idea what it is.

It's a teargas projector, designed to create a spray/fog of teargas in a large cloud at relatively close range.
The F2000 is a 5.56x45mm short assault rifle with an attached computer sight 40mm grenade launcher. The sight computer allows the grenade round to be programmed for maximum target effectiveness (air burst fragmentation, direct impact anti-material etc.)
