What the heck is a Master Device?
I've got the IDE Cable attached to the motherboard, the manual says I need to connect the second plug to the Slave Device (Hard Drive) and then the third to the Master Device.

The Master Device is an IDE device that functions as the primary device for that IDE cable. Commonly a PC has two IDE thingys (Primary and Secondary) that can have two IDE devices connected (the Master and Slave). Normally the Master is a hard-drive and the slave is external storgage device such as a CD player.
