Do you like Evanescence?

If you answered yes to the above question then congratulations, you have bad taste in music. I hoped and prayed that they would fade out by Christmas but noooo, almost every day I hear someone talking about how supposedly awesome they are... The lyrics are cliched, the vocals are annoying, the music sounds like numerous retarded three year olds with no hands banging on trashcans with screaming cats, and add that to the fact that they have a really terrible name. Almost as bad a Hoobastank. (who also sucks... hard)

Well, it is not up to you to judge people's choice of music. I must admit I don't like all the songs of Evanessance but some are good, no doubt about that. The bad things they are a group that is an example of popular metal. Within Temptation started out as a very good gothic metal band but after their first hit cd 'Mother Earth' they tend to be commercial. I guess you never seen Hoobastank live? They were in Rock Werchter few years back and they were great. Personally I hate the bastard music of 50 cent and hoped that he would disappear after that racket single yet he endures. Point being: it is not up to someone to critisize certain popular tendances.

I quite like em as well as Hoobstank. They've got some good songs, albeit some bad ones as well. Of all of them I have to say Hello is the best from Evanescence and Running Away from Hoobstank. Granted they're not Van Halen or Guns N' Roses but hey they're 100x better than whatever else is on right now.

Evenescence are almost as bad as Marylin Manson; in that they're a poor pop facsimilie of good music. There are much, much better bands out there that do the whole female vocalist gothic rock/metal thing so much better; like After Forever, Within Temptation, Tristania, and of course Nightwish. Evenescence are just clearly derivative and second rate compared to these groups.

Well, I mean there is still really good stuff out there, being produced today, and it's not *that* hard to find. There is a lot of shit, yes. A fantastic lot of shit. But there are still bands musically better than Evanescence and Hoobastank (OK, that is but my opinion, though in particular these bands stole the styles of other fledgling bands).

Unfortunately not here. The main rock station, 92.3 KROCK has just switched to playing modern stuff & "Great Rock" as they call it, which is basically classic rock. That's basically because of the garbage they've played of these new bands has killed their ratings.

Well anyway I like evanescence, I dont think her voice is great but the songs are good - most of them anyway. The earlier the better lol

In any case her voice is way better than Sharon from Within Temptations and that girl from Lullacry lol. Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, Beseech and Epica are my personal faves lol

Everything gets overplayed these days, that is just the way of things. Does being overplayed negate quality? What would that mean for Mozart, Chopin, Tchiakovsky, Bach, Handle and the like??

As for taste in music, mine's pretty eclectic. Hymns, Classical, CCM, Oldies, Sinatra, Crosby, Nat King Cole and the like, Rock, Def Leppard, Scorps, Bonham, Winger, Crew, BJ, Steelheart, Aerosmith, U2, to Pop, some Hip Hop, a few selected raps, R&B, the Blues, Old Western music, (not real fond of current country), Yanni, Enigma, Enya, and multiple traditional styles. I guess I'm not really fond of extreemly dark, depressed, fatalistic music, but I tend to be a relatively happy person so I guess that is to be expected...

No, I just have broad tastes that speak of the diverse exposure to talent on many levels and in may genres of music. Just because I don't like what you do doesn't mean I don't have an ear for music. Most current hard music consists of little more than a few power chords, if you can call that music... at least some of the guitarists in the bands I mentioned could actually create and play a solo... ;)

Yeah but usually multiple selections and not in a like 3 week period. She has a great voice don’t get me wrong but the lyrics are only alright so I guess not my thing

My musical selection ranges WIDLY

Mudvayne, Disturbed, System of a down, metalica, static-x, Korn, Orgy, Pumkins, 40 below summer, kitty, otep, slipknot … (this must not seem like much Varity) but then I go into tool, perfect circle, REM, Stepenwolf, Led_zeplin, Van halen, Eagles queen, (massive fan) of pink floyd …. So on so forth

It is amazing how the louder the guitar gets, the more people there are who thinks it is decent music.

Evenescence = Hoobastank with louder guitars

Hoobastank = Good Charlotte with louder guitars

Good Charlotte = Avril Levigne with louder guitars

Avril Levigne = Really Bad Pop star with guitars

I personally like every song off "Fallen". For instance, "Everybody's Fool":

Perfect by nature
Icons of self indulgence
Just what we all need
More lies about a world that

Never was and never will be
Have you no shame don't you see me
You know you've got everybody fooled

Look, here she comes now
Bow down and stare in wonder
Oh, how we love you
No flaws when you're pretending
But now I know she

Never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

Without the mask where will you hide
Can't find yourself lost in your lie

I know the truth now
I know who you are
And i don't love you anymore

It never was and never will be
You don't know how you've betrayed me
And somehow you've got everybody fooled

It never was and never will be
You're not real and you can't save me
Somehow now you're everybody's fool

How could you hate this song? The video's great, too.

If you really like guitar based rock, you should try listening to some Mozart or Tchiakovsky. I'd also suggest listening to Scorpions "Moment of Glory" album. You might be surprised at the similarity in the massiveness of the sound to hard rock. It can move your soul if you let yourself get lost in the music...

The term "gothic" has been really whored out recently. Everyone with black hair is gothic. Bring back the Cure i say. I dont like Evanesence, but they arnt really harming anyone, so if people like them whatever. If it gets 50 cent off the air for 3 minutes im all for it.

About the only thing I give them credit for is being one of the first groups to break through into the pop scene with an unusual combination of heavy guitar work and a female vocalist. There's some merit to be found in that, but not nearly enough to redeem them IMO.

I think their music is bland and uninspired, calculated to sell. The one hit they had made it to a movie soundtrack or two and features some guy shouting during the chorus. Hey look, he can shout. Big deal.

Their NAME, however, I find entirely appropriate. It describes every flavor-of-the-month pop band.

evanescence

the fact that you said that shows just how deprived you are listening to top 40 rock and watching MTV. if you want real quality metal you have to look for it. it went back underground after it's brief popularity in the 80's and is now actually bigger than ever.

if you want to sample new bands i suggest a subscription to BW&BK magazine and thier webpage at bravewords.com. each issue of the magazine is $7 and comes with a full cd with at least 15 full length demo songs from various bands.
i also highly suggest http://www.metal-rules.com/ to get reviews and updates on all the new stuff coming out(most of which can be bought on-line at century media)
so far this year i have purchased more than 12 new albums from both old and new bands. none of which you will hear on any mainstream american rock station.
