The Drum Corps season is almost here. Does anyone have any opinions on the shows for this year? Personally I think Phantom is going to go all the way. Their show is a killer. Rhapsody on Blue and An American in Paris. I think they can actually snag the championship this year.

Sounds like something I might find interesting. Where can I see it?

I saw a "Military Tattoo" that was held in Edinborough, Scotland once. Lots and lots of really great military bands. The Royal Scots Guards band was my favorite. :)

Yep I watch DCI :) My favourite show was a group a few (several) years back that did "The Planets" by Holst. They made this one formation that looked like a DNA double-helix... and then made it move like waves. It was the coolest thing!

It's the Scots Guard. There is no Royal in front.

Not sure what the Scottish Military Tattoo is but DrumCorps is like a gigantic marching band
On a field (most of the time) doing a show (kind of like collage bands but MUCH more advanced)

Example

here are some video's from phantom which I have had the pleasure of working with in the past

It is sometimes the problem is the shows are propriatory to the bands (always has been dont know why) so if you want to see full shows you almost have to buy the dci final tapes (dvd's )

Thats great, it is like the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It's like a big military music show of the Scottish Military.
Here is the link to the 2005 official site:

When you say you have had the pleassure of working with them, what do you mean?
Did you film it or are you a drummer?

I worked with minnesota brass (another corps) and did some training with them
I was a musician (I played trombone tuba snare and tennor at various times) but only snare with Corps

I also did training of and with phantoms line (phantom is one of the leads in the compition) along with a few others
and from what I have seen yes very simmilar theme ... as with a lot of things it got massive in the united states ... there are like 60 corps an average of at least 20 shows per season (or higher) (for just one corps)

Hundreds of shows infront of millions of people

But yes a lot of the same idea (more limitation on insturmentation types in the specific events but looks like greater latitude with the collorguard)

Ohhh by the way we do have our own military band shows ... DCI (drumb corps international) is a collection of civilian groups with a military style
Ages of members vary greatly

I have worked with 17 year olds to 70 year olds (Minnesota brass has 2, 60 + year old trumpet players)

Also looks like DCI does more visuals (all the field movements and drill)

I will have to make sure I see the American one on the net or in person, I really like the Scottish one so if the American one is half as good I'm sure I will enjoy it. Thanks for pointing it out. :)

Yeah. :)
If you are talking about the Scottish Tattoo then I promise you that you will enjoy it. It is worth the wait.
Bagpipes, Drums, Trompets, flutes etc. They even use guns to get the sound into their music, it's great.
The Tattoo even offers more then the Scottish Military, they have the Norwegian King's Guard often, New Zealand Bands, Australian Bands, South African, Canadian, other Commonwealth nations also take part and one time I even saw an American Band, Like in your film threr, play their music.
They even have shows were native people of the commonwealth nations play their music also in the originak way. You can't miss it.

I used to watch it, when I was in Hampton Roads.... unfortuneately none of the channels carry it in the James River area I live in now... so I'm SOL on it.

P.S. Santa Clara Vanguard and the Concord Blue Devils are always my two favorites....

All a hold off tastes from my time in marching band...
