I've never liked BBQ chicken, but steaks and ribs are great. Still, the kid's a student, which means he probably doesn't have enough cash to buy that kind of food and still get enough beer and liquor for the party.

I eat the following at a barbecue:

1. Cheeseburgers (hehe... can't forget the cheese!)
2. Brats (preferably cooked in beer before tossing them on the grill) with kraut
3. Chicken/ribs (slathered with barbecue sauce)
4. Hot Dogs

hopefully all are available...

accoutrements:

1. Potato Salad or cole slaw
2. Baked Beans
3. Corn on the cob (with about 2 pats of butter per ear)
4. Beer(!)

Give me one or two from the top list and all four on the bottom and I'm going to eat and drink till I drop. I love a good cookout.

Fools. Barbecue does not deserve to have its name attached to some outdoor cookout. If you want to have a proper barbecue, you must first get a big barbecue pit (a huge metal grill), and some wood. Not gas or charcoal, wood. Keep the fire low, so that the meat is not cooked by the flame but by the smoke.

The meat should be rubbed in seasonings and then put over the smoke for at least 6 hours until the meat is so tender a baby could eat it. Then, put your choice of sauce and serve with pickles and onions.

Now that's a perfunctory description, but you can get a more detailed plan on the web. However, never, ever call an outdoor grill party a barbecue unless you are actually barbecuing.

They are good! My favorite type of brat is the cooked brat, and Klements makes an excellent cooked brat. If you go to "gifts" you can get some... just go down the list to where you see the hyperlinks for the different types of brats/polish sausages. i think there's one in there that offers smoked bratwurst, cooked bratwurst and cheesy bratwurst (think that's it)... they give you 6 of each.

that sounds (to me) like a great brat starter package.

I think I have to agree here. You can't have a "BBQ" with *only* hamburgers and hot dogs. Hamburgers and hot dogs is called a "cookout". A BBQ requires any number of other foods: steak, brisket, pork, chicken, brats, sausage, beans, coleslaw, bread and iced tea. THATS a BBQ. If you only have hamburgers and hot dogs, it is a cookout.

If you are having a cookout, then hamburgers would be my preference.

Amen!

I'm originally from Texas, and calling a cookout a BBQ is close to fighting words. ;) Ya'll back east BBQ differently, but at least its real BBQ.

Unfortunately it's nigh impossible to do here in Japan. Not a pit in sight, and not hardly near enough room to keep one. :( There are a few restaurants around that manage a halfway edible version of BBQ - Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump, Outback Steakhouse, and Tony Roma's, as well a few local places. But
a good Korean Yakiniku (Bulgogi) place is usulally a better bet for getting good meat.

As for cookouts like the OP described, brats, chicken, steaks, assorted seafoods, and lots of Korean "yakiniku" style grilled meats. For fixings and sides: usually some kimchi, a good assortment of mushrooms and veggies, rice balls, and beer. Gotta have beer. Lotsa beer.

The real question isn't what meat to grill, but how to prepare it. Do you use a rub, or do you use sauce? Tradition in Georgia seems to be sauce, but I really like a dry rub on ribs. Especially when it has a little cayenne in it.

You're not killing chickens to get eggs... I always figured the roosters got sold to people who wanted to wake up at the crack of dawn, and if they're getting killed, I'm guessing they're becoming food for other people to eat... which would be happening anyways.

The etymology of the term is vague, but the most plausible theory states that the word "barbecue" is a derivative of the West Indian term "barbacoa," which denotes a method of slow-cooking meat over hot coals.
http://xroads.virginia.edu/~CLASS/MA95/dove/history.htm

The Australian and Yankee usages are corruptions.
Regardless of the exact etymology, I do not know anyone who is willing to claim the word is not of American origin. (Note: that is American, and emphatically not USAian!)

yeah, they do actually taste good. I was surpised too.

The fish things are a bit dodgy, but ketchup sorts that.

And some of the burgers and sausages my meat eater friends couldn't tell - they tasted like cheap burgers apparently
The burgers are quite burgery, but the sausages are an abomination.

www.quorn.co.uk

It's a flavoured, texture fungal based protein.

Sounds grim, but it's pretty good.

There's also Swedish balls in there-its like soylent green!
I must admit-I'm terribly deficient in the "fungal based protein" area.

Australian BBQ's are cooking as much meat as possible outside while drinking, then eating it a bit burnt baecause you were paying attention to drinking, not cooking.

Same here. We put on some music, plenty of beer on ice. kids in the pool, Drink, grill, laugh.

Kosher hot dogs are pretty darn good. We have a local barbecue restaurant that serves them. Almost as good as pulled pork.

pulled pork with hickory BBQ sauce on a toasted hard rolls is damn good.

Meat. Pork's belly and neck (Bauchfleisch & Nackensteaks). Mmh.
Not to forget German beer to make all the meat swim in my tummy :p

But I would eat your hamburgers & hotdogs as well, a nice Bratwurst on the side, potato salad - DAMMIT! Now I'm hungry :D

Wtf... Ive never heard of that. Can you tell me what Quorn is?

A "mycoprotein" meat substitute made from a vat-grown fungus. It's been available in Europe for more than a decade. It's supposed to be better than soy-"meats", but there is some scepticism about it.
