I just asked one of my friends if they knew where I could find some Ella Fitzgerald stuff, and they had no clue who I was talking about so I'm wondering what kind of music y'all listen to.

I listen to first and foremost COUNTRY! I love it like the dickens. I live in South Carolina though, the majority of the stations are usually country. I love the lyrics though, they're either pretty funny or inspirational. Plus, I like the little twang for lord only knows why and I love some of the voices like Martina McBride. That woman has one of the best voices alive.

I also love swing and big band, especually things from Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald. It's great to dance to with the forgotten moves of the 40's and just has a great tune to it with some of the best vocals in the world.

Finally, I love r&b. The whole experience just rules.

What about y'all? Back it up too.

Ella Fitzgerald is classic. To me, she has the best voice of the 20th century. We really lost something in 96' and to me she really is the first lady of music.

Rock.

It's the dividing line between us and them, and them are the oppressive overlords of humanity and the servants of darkness. They listen to crap like Christian popular music which I understand is even now being cataloged in the music library of Hell so they'll have something to listen to.

Rock and metal in all their forms except nu-metal and most gore-metal. Oh, and most pop-rock.

I also like a little bit of older rap, and am planning to buy something by Billie Holliday soon. (I've heard a couple covers of "Gloomy Sunday" that I like) and perhaps Bessie Smith and Leadbelly.

Well, as far of the saddest of sad, there's goth, or doom-goth, such as My Dying Bride. As far as the most hate filled hate, I suggest Napalm Death, as, while they're full of hate, they're not hate-filled in the sense that a racist or homophobe is.

They are an international band. They aren't indie at all, unless they're still indie because they fit the sound of the genre despite signing to a major, which is a concept almost as stupid as pop punk.

The fact is that for a British band to make it big in America they have to sign to a big label like Epic, but here in Britain they can make big on indie labels therefore making them Indie.

I guess. I still think the concept of indie as a genre is silly; there are plenty of stoner rock, grunge, punk, etc. bands that have and continue to release stuff on independent labels. Why is "indie" a sound? It's just alternative rock.

I listen to good music.

I don't think there's any genre in which I'm not bound to love some stuff, and hate some stuff. For instance, in classical music, I love Haydn but hate Mozart. In alternative, I love Pearl Jam and the Smashing Pumpkins, but hate Nirvana. I love artists you've never heard of, but I also love some that are incredibly popular. I pay much more attention to specific artists than to any genre.

Anyway: gregorian chant, pre-baroque music, good baroque (esp. J.S. Bach and G.F. Haendel), classical music, almost everything from the romantic era. I love jazz, especially bebop (but hardly exclusively), but I do hate some jazz (most of the recent stuff (but then again you've got some great fusion nowadays)). I like early hip hop. In rock, I love classic and alternative rock mostly. I also love good heavy metal, black metal, etc. Good electronic music is also great. But to all these lists, there are huge exceptions.

I'm watching VH-1 .. listing hottest couples and such.. well Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley came up. They kept calling Billy Joel a pop artist. I never considered Billy pop. I consider him a sort of R&R. Looked it up on web.. also many sites labeling Billy as pop. I'm sorry but I don't list him in the same genre as Brittany Spears .. Celine Dion and the rest of that crap. Are they calling him pop cause he has so many hits? I know the term "pop" means popular .. but I also thought it meant worthless crap that teeny boppers or people with bad music taste liked. Is Elton John also considered pop?

I can enjoy all genres, but my favorite is rock, especially punk. My least favorites are country/southern rock/bluegrass and pop. I actually like reggae a lot. It wasn't really on the list. Actually, all ska-related genres are cool. Go ska.

Billy Idol is actually pretty close to being a pop musician. Many people have a misunderstanding about what pop is. It is really pretty much any music that is based upon repetitive hooks and basic song structure that is meant to keep the listener focused on the melody of the hooks.

I would view Billy Joel as pop-rock. I don't view pop as short for "popular" when it comes to music. However, the style of pop has changed throughout the years, as pop used to mean oldies, early-style Beatles.

I have a list of them on my computer anyway. It was actually faster to cut and paste than to type a list of genres.

Nirvana mostly suck IMO. Did you notice that I have Isn't Anything by MBV, which no-one else seems to have?

Yes. Just because it's good doesn't mean that it's not pop music. There is good and bad music in every genre. The crap in pop is just more famous than the crap in other genres.

Alright, I have a question, what do y'all have against country? This isn't me being rude or anything, I'm just really curious what turns people off of it.
Largely the twangy slide guitars, whining vocals and cliched lyrics. Some of it is good though.

I dislike country, but I like it much more than hip-hop and most rap. C'mon people, you have to admit Mockingbird by Eminem is good. I hated him with a burning passion until that came out. Now I tolerate him. My interests differ greatly- Green Day, Evanesence, The Beatles, Classical, Jazz...

My favorite bands are Sonic Youth, Swans, Dinosaur Jr. American Music Club, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks... post punk is also awsome, like Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen etc. I also happen to think that the Beatles are possibly the best band this world has ever seen. Then there's also the 70's stuff like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Pere Ubu, Can. Any fans of the more obscure music I've mentioned? I'd be surprised.

Rock / Metal mostly but I'll listen to almost anything.
System Of a Down, Queens Of the Stone Age, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Queen, Nightwish, Fear Factory, Static X, Foo Fighters, Korn is tolerble in small doses, Rammstein, Mudvayne, Sevendust, some Limp Bizkit and Green Day
other stuff include classical, jazz if im in the mood, some commerical rock like Coldplaycan be good. 80's pop can also be all right, espceially Aus/NZ stuff like Split Enzs, Crowded House, Hoodoo Gurus etc.

Lately i've gotten into the Devin Townhends side project. For anyone who likes metal but does not know Devin Townhends/Strapping YOung Lad should be ashamed. He played on Vai, Front line Assembly, produces some SOilwork stuff and a whole bunch of other shit.Solo stuff is still metal but more mellow.
ww.hevydevy.com is his label and has a good selection of legal; mp3's of his diverse stuff

Rap Some Busta Rhymes, Xibit, Dr.Dre and D12, but almost all Eminem. Eminem's the most important thing to happen to rap, becuse he has brought it to the suburbs. My parents like his stuff and they are 40-50 yr old white people that hate rap.

Well, with No New York I've been told two different things, one that its still avaliable and is on CD, and the other that it's out of print. I heard it cos a friend downloaded it and gave it to me, so it is out there. And I totally agree, I reckon Children of God is their best, I really like the undulating sound it gives, i.e the smooth switch of the heavy "new mind" to the very mellow "in my garden". The Verlains wrote a song called death and the maiden which Stephen Malkmus of Pavement covered, they're quite a good band, it's worth checking their stuff out too. Might be hard in the U.S. Their label is Flying Nun if it helps.

Things have indeed changed. For your parents to be digging him .. it doesn't hurt none that he is white.

In my case in the 7th grade my Beastie Boys: Licensed to Iil tape was taken and drestroyed by my sister in law .. in my face.. because she said they were talking about cocaine when they said "from here to white castle". I had no idea what they were talking about at the time (and had never even heard of cocaine til that day she said that and took it).. but now I know they were talking about the damn burger's. Who's mind was in the gutter there? hmmm. My Fat Boy's tape was taken and destroyed by my sister .. just because .. and Ice Cube: Amerikkka's Most Wanted tapes were regularly destroyed by my dad (I'd just dub it from a friend each time). He's the only one that had a right or reason to do so....since the album was pretty violent and vulgar.. even though by then I was 16. He detested rap ofcourse.

It still pisses me off about my sister and in-law.
