Version 2.1-Alphabetized, Added more languages: Ancients, African

Often, users may need help identifying or translating a language, or even just plain talking in it. So I have an idea: Let's create a listing of all users who can help with foreign languages. Please post which languages you are fluent enough to recognize and/or help with. Also, PLEASE TG me to frauds, bad translators,mistakes.... I don't require examples. In addition, tell me exactly what languages you can do IN ENGLISH!

***This is a great idea. I like it!!

Add me to the Spanish list please. I am fairly fluent in that.

My Hebrew, however is limited . You can put my name there too if you'd like. However, I'll let users know up front that I am not fluent enough to be fully conversational in it. (I can understand and roughly translate small amounts at a time, but cannot carry on an ongoing chat in Hebrew -especially since my qwerty keyboard has no Hebrew characters.) -If someone wanted words in the Hebrew alphabet, though, I could use special characters in Open Office and then cut and paste them into my post.

They never spoke Gaelic in Ireland, that is a common error. Gaelic was in Scottland, the Irish spoke Gaeglic (again I have difficulty spelling even my native language) or something that is very similar to gaelic.

Maybe because Finnish isn't a Scandinavian language at all? English and Chinese are just as related.

Anyway, in Finnish, language names are spelled without the initial capital, the language is "suomi", while the country is "Suomi". The idea that a language, weekday, or month name is a proper name is silly anyway.

We did have a Finnish thread somewhen...

Finnish:
Järjestelmällisen toisinajattelun kitkemisen voidaan sanoa olevan ainoastaan kaikkien itsevaltaisten yhteiskuntajärjestelmien piirre, ei niinkään määritelmä. Varsinainen itsevalta on mahdollista vain, kun jokainen on ostettavissa, mihin vaaditaan monimutkaisia, jopa tarkoin suunniteltuja korruptiorakenteita. Tällaisia rakenteita oli havaittavissa muun muassa äärikansallismielisissä valtioissa toisen maailmansodan aikana.

Please give some examples, it'd be fun to see what kind of languages they are, and to verify that it's actually true. With native orthography + for other than Latin alphabets, some sane transcription (NONE of that "English spelling" shit, which is worth-free).

Olisi hienoa nähdä esimerkkejä siitä minkälaisia kieliä osaatte, ja samalla varmentaa, ettette vain väitä. Esimerkit mielellään oman kirjoitusjärjestelmänsä mukaan + muille kuin latinalaisia aakkosia käyttäville jokin järkevä translitterointi (EI mitään englannin mukaan translitterointeja, joista ei ole hyötyä kenellekään).

(Orthography: AEIOU as in Spanish, Ä fronted A as in English "bat", Ö rounded E closest to English 'er', Y rounded I with no English counterpart. Stress on first syllable. Doubled letters pronounced simply longer.)

If you know two or more IE languages, specifically European, you will probably be able to take on Esperanto with ease. It is a very simply structured language.

Little Spanish - Hablo un poco Espanol. (tilde, gahhh!)
So-Little-Finnish-I-Shouldn't-Even-List-It - Terve! Mita kuulu? (or something like that)

Is Chinese/Mandarin as hard as everyone says it is? Or is it just the new alphabet that kills you? Interested in learning it, that's all.

For what it's worth, you can add me as a fluent Swedish (Svenska) speaker.

You could put me down for Spanish and German, but if you've got native speakers, don't bother.. However, I can translate Tagalog and Visaya (another Philippine dialect), since I know a good deal myself, and live with many family members who are fluent in both. :)

Updated to here. Please don't say you can do a language unless you are positive you can. It's either you can or you can't

Pretty good at French, German and Spanish. Doing A-levels in them... :)
