I'm wonderin... what made you come up with the name for your countr when you started playin NS?
Well, the country I post under, Zotona, just came off the top of my head. *Shrugs.*
Riverlund
29-04-2005, 22:27
I just used a name of a country from one of my weekend D&D games. It's rather pastoral, and full of rivers, hence the name, and I like rivers, so...there you go.
Peechland
29-04-2005, 22:29
I live in Ga which is the peach state-hence Peachland. But it wouldnt accept peAchland...so I made it peechland
Frangland
29-04-2005, 22:35
I tried a bunch of others first...
then settled on Frangland, which is lame. lol
France + England = Frangland
My nation name comes from a book published by the Organisation of the Swedish Pharmaceutical Industry.
The book is a catalogue of all prescription and non-prescription medicines avaliable for sale in Swedish pharmacies, and details their side-effects, dosages, active substances, costs, indications, contra-indications and so on and so forth. It's avaliable online at http://www.fass.se
I just happened to have the book on my desk when I signed up:

If I could do it all over again, I'd call my country "Lactation Nation" or something like that. hehe
Drunk commies reborn
29-04-2005, 22:38
I'm a born again christian alcoholic communist.
"The Community of Pyhi" is "Pyhin yhteisö" in Finnish; that also means "the holiest community." Wandering to Pyhi would be "Pyhiin vaellus" which also means "pilgrimage." You see, this is really about playing with words of different languages.

Carnivorous Lickers
29-04-2005, 22:40
I'm carnivorous. I sometimes go to the zoo at feeding time and watch the lion lick the deer quarter before eating it.

I'm wonderin... what made you come up with the name for your countr when you started playin NS?
I picked somthing as close as I could get phonetically to my general attitude...
Venus Mound
29-04-2005, 22:45
I picked Venus Mound because, on top of being a bodypart, it sounds like a geographical location (Venus Mount?), so that adds up to a funny name which also sounds like it could be the name of a real country.
I have two other test countries for fun, one quite conservative and the other über lefty. I named the latter one the Kingdom of Paratonia, a condition similar to catatonia (my first choice, already taken), to reflect the country's potential for change. And the commie country I named the Democratic States of Beyond the Grave after a book, and because it sounds cool, and communist totalitarian country-like.
East Lithuania
29-04-2005, 22:45
Mine... my family heritage is from Lithuania, and the wouldn't let me use the name. And since i live in NJ, on the East of America, it became East Lithuania.
Named after fictional creatures I made up called Jibs who were humaniod autotrophic reptilian-like warring creatures. So Jibea is just it.
My puppet Legionar comes from the game RA2's Chronolegionar and the currency came from the chronosphere.
Sometimes I despair about humanity and government in general, and lately America in particular, and I have long joked about giving up on the whole thing and retreating to the Sierras, building a cabin, planting land mines and machinegun nests, and declaring myself an independent nation. I named the country Cabinia after its capital, the cabin. This was a running joke for me long before I came to NS, so I already had a made-up nation when I got here.
Sol-Rellia
29-04-2005, 22:52
Well Sol was already taken, so I added Rellia onto it.
Pure Metal
29-04-2005, 22:53
i used to love, really love, heavy metal, when i made my nation.
still like it a lot (preferred music genre), but i listen to a lot of other things now :)
SorenKierkegaard
29-04-2005, 23:08
Well, I'm a fan of Kierkegaard, not die hard, but it's good stuff. And I'm on a kick with the name, cause we just got a pet bunny two weeks ago and I thought it would be funny to name a little fluffy bunny after a stoic philosopher. Kierkegaard = a fuzzy black and white bunny. There's irony in there somewhere.
Sdaeriji
29-04-2005, 23:09
Punch keyboard.
Add vowels.
Repeat as necessary.
The origins of "Sdaeriji"
Mine's from Edgar Allan Poe's "Ulalume". "Weir" was taken.
The skies they were ashen and sober;
The leaves they were crisped and sere—
The leaves they were withering and sere;
It was night in the lonesome October
Of my most immemorial year;
It was hard by the dim lake of Auber,
In the misty mid region of Weir—
It was down by the dank tarn of Auber,
In the ghoul-haunted woodland of Weir.
I added "-ia" because it sounded more nation-ish. Plus, I didn't want to rule over just a lake. That'd be weird.
Artamazia
29-04-2005, 23:54
In history, we were learning about ancient Persia, and Zoroastrianism, and someone mispronounced Ahura Mazda as Artamazda. I just took out the D, and added an A to make it sound more like a country.
An archy
30-04-2005, 20:41
This name comes from my political tendencies. I am an anarchists. I devided it up into An Archy to symbolize the anarchocapitalist leanings I had at the time I created the country. (The Arch Delux was a hamburger sold at McDonald's in the 90's. Since the class action law suits against the company, they have taken it off the market. In an Anarcho-capitalist country, they would not have felt the need to do so unless the hamburger did not sell. Therefore, I felt that An Archy aptly represented my political beliefs, McDonald's being a symbol of big buissiness.)
Note- Since my thread, "A Question for Communists", I now describe myself as an "Anarcho-centrist." I am, at this point, entirely unsure of the optimum level of collectivization.
Niccolo Medici
30-04-2005, 20:47
Boy...I see one of these every couple of months.
And I always answer them too...how vain am I? (don't answer that)
Niccolo: First name of the Author of "The Prince"
Medici: Last name of the guy he wrote "The Prince" for.
The prince was the first political science book I ever read for fun. Big influence on me.
The Land of the Enemy
30-04-2005, 20:51
I just translated the word "mordor" into English.

This name always struck me as one of those underground/indie comics 'about life'-you know with chain smoking abstractly drawn characters that have long inner monologues about the irratating aspects of life. Somewhere between Ghost World and American Splendor.
Yevon the Third

Wait a minute....Yevon the Third? I didn't know your nation ever got deleted.
It was cog'd. the next one was myrth'd.

My name was chosen to be ironic. My country is run by a corrupt dictatorship.

Oh....
And so I'm not getting off topic, Suicidal Librarians isn't even my original nation. The one I actually made at school was Stupid Freaks. I posted with it on the old forum a lot, but I decided to stick with Suicidal Librarians.

Wall hallo there, RiotGirlHeather... would you care for some broiled pancreas? I was so disappointed in my Minister of Finance that I had him... canned.
Taverham high
30-04-2005, 21:41
i really dont like my nations name, which is after my school, because i liked the idea of screwing about with the pupils and teachers, heh heh heh.
i improved it a bit by calling it 'the dail mails moral nightmare of taverham high', but i still hate it.
i just had the stupid teletubby song stuck in my head at the time, so i suppose it was a subconscious thing
"Takuma" just sounded and looked good.
In retrospect, however, it really should have been "Tacuma", even though that doesn't look as good.
Australus
30-04-2005, 22:47
My name is Austin, and I wanted something nice and country-like, so I decided to use the southern-hemisphere equivalent of the Northern Lights (the Aurora Australis) for my country's name. But since Australis was already taken by a defunct nation, I had to tweak it a little.
I promise I'm not paying homage to Australia.
The Ingame explaination? A great hero, with a last name similar to chellis, saved us from the north koreans, when we fled...blah blah blah...
In an old roleplaying game I was in, I made up a race of aliens named chellians, who resided on chellis. They came to war with certain factions on earth, and ended up winning. I've always been a horrid RP'er, though, because I never let myself lose.... but thats another story.
Pharoah Kiefer Meister
30-04-2005, 22:51
Pharoah: (deliberately miss spelled) kings of Egypt, some who were
viewed as gods.
Kiefer: my last name
Meister: Master
A hurriedly made up name when signing up.
Snowglobia
30-04-2005, 22:56
I named it after the snowglobe in 'Citizen Kane.'
Boonytopia
30-04-2005, 23:28
Named after the legendary Aussie cricketer David Boon.
Jello Biafra
01-05-2005, 03:21
I realized that this was a political game, and decided that I wanted to name my nation after someone who shaped my political beliefs. And Noam Chomsky was already taken.

Because I am quite lazy, just what is it an anagram of?
Ness Snorlaxia
01-05-2005, 04:46
Ness Snorlaxia - my screename on many forums is "NessSnorlax." So, I added a space between the two words and added the -ia to "Snorlax" to make it sound more country-ish.
Super Mario Bros - the classic video game Super Mario Bros.
Nintendo Revolution - upcoming Nintendo console.
PlayStation Portable - video game handheld that is competing with the Nintendo DS.
Lycia City - in the game Fire Emblem, there's a place called "Lycia." Since that name was taken, I added "City" to it.
Oubangui-Chari - former French colony that is now called Central African Republic.
Zalaegerszeg - a city in Zala County, Hungary.
Victoria Valley - In Ness Snorlaxia, I named a state Victoria after the former queen of the United Kingdom. I added "Valley" to it as the name "New Victoria" was taken.

Same here. Not the Zotona part, the "top of my head part". :) I still often wonder if it sounds good or not...
Off the top of my head. I thought it sorta sounded like a country. *shrugs*

Cape Carnivale
01-05-2005, 08:16
I thought Cape Carnivalé was a port, but after puttinh it into google, I'm starting to believe it somehow popped into my head as something I thought was a real town.
Unless I am mistaken and it's actually just really small and insignificant.

You might be thinking of Cape Canaveral.
Jordaxia
01-05-2005, 13:27
okie dokie.... I've had one or two nations over the years, but not that many, so I'll give them all.
Jordaxia: take my middle name, Jordan. Realise it's a sucky name for a country (as the real Jordan proves) and replace the N for an X, because X is a much cooler letter. Jordax. Realise that Jordax just doesn't flow, and the natural evolution for it anyway (consider that an Empire of Jordax would be the Jordaxian empire, and its people would be Jordaxians), and add the ia.
It's pronounced Jor-Daze-ee-a, just in case anyone was unsure.
Glanis is the name of a celtic God, can't remember which one.
Haliae is the name of a Greek water sprite type creature, or the goddess of them, or something.
Mad Kraftwerk Fans.... well.... it just amused me, and I like Kraftwerk.
there you go.
Harlesburg
01-05-2005, 13:29
Its my last name and i wanted a real country name even though it is a City name.
I would have gone with Banana Republic but i thought realisticly good thing i didnt aim for that cause it was taken! :) :(
First atempt to! :D
Jeruselem
01-05-2005, 13:31

Leliopolis
01-05-2005, 19:25
I first came up with Leliopolis last semester in Ancient Civs and we had to make up a city state and make laws, a flag etc. my group didnt want to go along with it, so their sadly is no city state called Leliopolis. The name means city of Lelio, one of the names used by Lestat in the VCs. Lelio is the name of a young romantic in an improv play that Lestat does when he runs away with a troupe. So, yes, the name of my nationsate is a vague reference to a series of books by Anne Rice, and a bold declaration of my dorkyness for anything Vampire Chronicles.
Technottoma
01-05-2005, 20:54
Back in the 7th grade I had to do a brochure on a place I'd call a paradise. I had to have (in the brochure) what was so great about the place, government, schools, landscape, and jobs for people who wanted to relocate to the place. I decided that my ideal paradise would be a place with unlimitedly sophisticated technology. So I took the first part of the word "technology" (techno) and grouped it with a word I thought ment paradise (toma; does it?). Final product: Technottoma (pronounced Tek-no-toma, short o sound).
When I heard about NS and signed up I already knew I'd call my nation (or commonwealth that is, since Technottoma is actually a planet in the Gamma Quadrent) Technottoma.
Harlesburg
02-05-2005, 06:53
Where is Harlesburg?
Im on the Computer!
I dont think it exists but i always had a dream that id have my own Country and had already thought of names for cities
Mirth-Not Myrth but close
Shaed-Yes i actually had that!
But no Harlesburg
My nation was to be called Maur!
I felt that the word Fenure has a sort of "real country name" sound to it.
Although my first country, Northros, was due the Westros already being taken. I was playing A Game of Thrones CCG alot at the time (and still am).
However Fenure ended up becoming my primary nation. Fenure was created only days after Northros. Fenure ended up joining the UN and becoming a delagate of two seperate regions. Thus I ended up loggingin as Fenure more and joined the message board under that name.
Intangelon
02-05-2005, 10:48
I just pieced together an official-sounding name from Latin pieces that conveyed the nature of any online "nation."
in- ("not", though occasionally "very" as in "inflammable")
TANG ("to touch" as in "tangent" and "tangible")
-elon (just something I threw on to make it sound like a country that didn't end in the monotonous "-ia").
It's pronounced "in-TAN-jell-ON" with the syllable "ON" getting minor stress.
So essentially, my country's name is "untouchable-ania" or something. "Intangelon" sounded cooler, and, being virtual, I thought it was mildly clever.
Nothing spectacular, but I rather enjoy it.
Thanks for asking.
Kzuu Mai
02-05-2005, 11:33
When I made the nation I was mildy interested in Sun Tzu. I swapped the T for a K and added an extra U for no apparent reason, then added Mai on the end because Kzuu was a bit short and boring.
Pronounced kZOO My, with a only a very slight pronounciation of the K.
Not a particularly fascinating or clever "History of name" but never mind.
Jester III
02-05-2005, 12:58
Been Jester and Jester II in two other online games, thus it ws logical. Besides, do you know "Wyrd Sisters" from Pratchett, were the jester inherits the kingdom? ;) Its very practical should i get banned for being too unfriendly (can you say Jester IV?) and reflects my personality, being cynic about authorities now and plain silly the next.
