Hero Building

The Fifth Star

Ok, Let’s try something new. This is going to work like a “Chain story”. I’m going to introduce a group of people or a person, and their setting. The next post must keep the story of a person of the group (or the whole group itself) moving. Keep in mind that a good story always follows a couple guide lines. These guidelines are followed by almost all classic heros of Greek or Roman literature. These guide lines don’t have to be followed, they only open the story and gives it more depth.
The hero’s quest includes:

separation from the known
1. The call
2. The Threshold (with guardians, helpers, and mentors)
Initiation and Transformation
3. The Challenges (obsticles)
4. The Abyss (low-point)
5. The Transformation
6. The Revelation
7. The Atonement
The Return to the known
8. The Return

The Classic Hero
-- Unusual Circumstances of Birth
-- Traumatic Event Leads to Quest
-- Leaves Family and Lives With Others
-- They must perform extraordinary feats, usually by a gift or talent.
-- They usually have a fatal flaw that unearths an obsticle
-- Special Weapon
-- Supernatural help
-- Death must occur in an unusual way.
-- The hero fights for his own honor; his deeds belong to his community only after his death.
-- Atonement With Father/Parent-figure
-- Spiritual Revelation

These ideas or of, and writin by, Joseph Cambell and are expressed in the book, Man and Mythology.

Alright, now to start the story.
Outside a small house lays a sign baring the name Markham. In this house lives a small family no more then a son and his father. They where of course are happy living in their small house in the outskirts, but nothing is constant in this world and brave men often start out weak. The old man was growing older and the son had to support them both, so he found a job working as a mountain guide not far from home. At this job he meets a faithful friend, as they often work together. Unlike their frame, their friendship was strong.
