Is Democracy Gay?

What's the deal here? I was humming the song "Philadelphia Freedom" at work today - and some guy said that it was a "Gay" song. He also went on to imply that Elton John was also Gay! This is ridiculous, right? "Philadelphia Freedom" is a British homage to American Democracy, isn't it? The wise-ass at work said that the name "Philadelphia" is greek for homosexual sex. What the hell?! He also pointed out the lyric: "Philadelphia Freedom took me knee-high to a man" as if it were implying some sort of homo-oral shenanigans. I find all of this very offensive and think my co-worker owes Sir Elton, the British people and the good citizens of Philadelphia an apology.

A few things.

Elton John [is] gay. But homosexuality doesn't make you any less (or any more) of a person. Gays, straights, and people of any other sexual orientation are equal.

To imply that Philadelphia, a city with a metropolitan area of 4,000,000 (1.5 million in the city proper) is gay is preposterous. Your coworker is obviously an ignorant homophobe. Philadelphia actually has one of the smaller gay communities.

Democracy is a government. It has no sexual orientation.

Philadelphia is Greek for "Brotherly Love", from philos, "loving", and adelphos, "brother". They didn't just make up the name "City of Brotherly Love".

You people are all crazy! Elton John can't be Gay. He was married to lady. Besides, the queen wouldn't knight a gay guy - no offense! As for this Philadelphia stuff... just cause Tom Hanks made a gay movie in Philadelphia or that Terri Bradshaw is Gay doesn't mean it's a Gay town. No one has ever called me a troll before. I feel very conflicted now. What should I do? Was I out of line? Did I hurt someones feelings? Do I need to apologize to somebody?

I really did not mean to imply that Elton John was Gay. I was simply passing on the rumor that some mean-spirited coworker told me. I also am pretty sure that Philadelphia is like 99% hetero(Bradshaw excepted). I hope that clears things up.

People are accusing you of trolling because Elton John is QUITE OPENLY gay. In fact, he's planning to get married to another guy this christmas.
AND IN CASE YOU THINK I'M SCREWING WITH YOU. (http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/04/25/elton.wedding.reut/)

Really, you were called a troll because it sounded like you were bashing gays. Since a good many NS players are gay, that's looked down upon here.

Yeah, seriously, Elton John IS gay.
And the Queen has NOTHING to do with the Honours system, she just holds the sword. The Queen merely acts on the "advice" of the Prime Minister, who awards all honours.
The ONLY honours that the Queen Herself chooses are the ones given out on Her birthday. She chooses them entirely. You clearly have no knowledge of the British Honours system.

just because he has announced that he is going to marry a man doesnt make him GAY.

??????Last time I checked even Elton thinks he is gay!

Philli is referred to as the city of Brotherly Love because..

brotherly love, a city of Lydia in Asia Minor, about 25 miles south-east of Sardis. It was the seat of one of the "seven churches" (Rev. 3:7-12). It came into the possession of the Turks in AD 1392. It has several times been nearly destroyed by earthquakes. It is still a town of considerable size, called Allahshehr, "the city of God."

Brotherly love has nothing to do with being gay..it just promotes incest!

Troll is right. Sir Ian McKellen is quite the homosexual, openly and admittedly. Her Majesty Knighted Sir Ian based on his contributions to the United Kingdom. These standards have nothing at all to do with whether he prefers a man or a woman for sexual satisfaction. Sir Elton was also Knighted.

With all due regard for your trollish rant, your objections to Philadelphia being named out of the Greek language are noted and filed in the proper place. I believe you would call it the circular file.
