The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy

I saw the new movie version of The Guide last night. It was... OK. They stayed fairly faithful to the book right up until about the last half hour. After that it kind of twisted off and did it's own thing. I guess the opening dolphin song and dance number was not in any of the books either. The people they cast all did a pretty good job, but I couldn't help but comparing them in my head to the BBC TV version. They did not have enough of (or about) the guide itself in it in my opinion. The Guide bits were some of the funniest parts of the BBC version. Some of the dialogue from the book was chopped up to the point of not being funny as well. I didn't hate it, I laughed out loud several times, and it was free. So overall, I guess it was... OK. :)

DISCLAIMER: This of course is just my opinion, I don't claim to be a Douglas Adams expert.

Well, since (I thought) everyone knew from the start that the Radio Script differs from the Book(s), differs from the TV script, differs from the Movie Script differs from the (new) Radio Script, that real Froods would take this into account and wouldn't try to compare them and just bask in the glory of all that is Hoopy.

Oh, by the way - Belgium! for discussing any of the bits untill I get to see it.

No one I know liked it a lot. Most people preferred the book and the radio show, which if you haven't looked at the latter you ought to.

Don't you listen to a radio show? How do you look at it?

Yes, I am aware that they are all somewhat different. That being said there are BIG differences and there are little ones. So when hollywood in general and Disney in particular get their hands on something, it's hard not to make some comparisons..

Indeed. I think the last thing any of us expected from this movie was continuity. :)

I think the biggest problem is they're remaking British comedy for an American audience. The evil committee machine will strip a great deal of what made the books great and replace it with hackneyed and unfunny garbage.

42!!!!
(The sort of real question is what do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?)

Anyway, Adams himself said that all versions of HHGTG contradict each other. Why should the movie be any different?

He is one of my favourite authors:(. Absolutely brilliant. Have you read his essay on his atheism in the last collection of his essays and musings, "the Salmon of Doubt"? If not...do so at once I say!

(The sort of real question is what do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?)Because it was not the result of the ten million years of Earth's existence. It was meant to be gibberish. The whole "base 13" thing was random chance.

The books (except for Mostly Harmless) are exceptional and unmatched in their genre. I also find great appeal in the campy Britcom.

I will see this new version soon and I'm sure I will enjoy it very much, especially picking apart all the little differences between the book, tv series, and film - which is, actually, part of the fun in any film adaptation of a previous work.

Purists get pissy, but I enjoy that aspect of it.

Though I am curious ... any explanation as to why Zaphod only seems to have 1 head in the trailer?

I seem to remember seeing a picture or something...I think one head is supposed to be on top of the other which is hidden under his clothes, and sometimes the top head goes up and the lower one pops out.

Hey, where's the obligatory 42 in the thread?

Right here, spookily enough:

No that was me. I bought two of the books (the orginal and the Resturant at the End of the Galaxy) and am probably going to go and see the film this Saturday.

saw the movie today (first session at my local cinema), and whilst it was quite different to the books, radio series, and TV series, it was good in its own way. They still retained much of the original humour, but they scrapped the Leopard joke...

That was one of the things that threw me off. They led up to it as if it were going to be there then, *poof* nothing. I wonder if it got edited for some reason. Some of the stuff they added (like the yarn bit) I enjoyed quite a lot.
