Whenever I hear a song by Hanson I get ill. I'm not kidding, I seriously start feeling queasy and my head hurts and it doesn't stop until I change the channel or leave the room. I despise their music to the very core of my soul. Why then, you might ask, do you admire them? I admire them because I despise what they produce.
I am a man with varied music tates. I love the Beatles, the Monkeys, Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, and Queen. I'm a fan of Ozzy and Bruce Springsteen. I love Aerosmith and Blue Oyster Cult and Green Day. I have the soundtracks for Les Miserables and the Pirates of Penzance. John Denver and Jimmy Buffet, AC/DC and Van Halen, Billy Joel and James Kochalka, Joan Jett and Trocadero, Pat Benatar and America, and almost anything else you can imagine. Pretty much everything except what people call 'Pop' now-a-days (I say now-a-days because back in the '60's the Beatles were pop). Modern pop I really can't stand, I change the radio whenever it's on and turn my music up if somebody else near me is listening to it. So, why do I admire pop stars? Simple: Because they're rich, famous, and envied by almost all of America.
To me, a person needs to produce something of value to succeed. I don't mean they need to revolutionise the world, they just need to contribute something. Whether its the newest medical advance or simply manual labor, I feel that for an honest person to succeed they need to contribute something (I say honest because drug dealers and whatnot can succeed without contributing anything to the world, and I'm saying this because I'm sure if I didn't then somebody will yell "But what about the drug lords? Huh?" and then we'll start flaming and cursing and the Mods will come and we'll say "It was that poster! Ban them!" and they'll say "What about that post?" and I'll say "Yeah...well..look over there!" and they won't fall for it and we'll all get warned and badness will happen). But the pop stars have succeeded beyond what I'll probably ever accomplish, and they've done it without producing a single darn thing. I mean think about it, you watch a concert of theirs and you see women that I'll never get screaming their lungs out, you see millions of fans, you see hotels and limos and rather costly plastic surgery, and all without producing anything worthwhile.
I admire that, because somehow they've managed to work outside the system and get to the top. I figure they've got to be a lot smarter than they let on, or they're increadibly lucky. Wait....they had a song called "Mmm-bop".....lucky bastards.
