Depends on where you go...Here in Iceland they don't carry guns (except at the airports). There is a special team called the "viking squad" that carries big guns if they are needed, like the swat teams.

I wasn't really making fun of the events - having seen the documentary film Terrorists about the trials they held afterwards I'm sure I only got a partial glimpse of the full story and a somewhat biased one at that, but enough to know that something had gone seriously wrong with the police there.

If its any consolation to you though Sweden is far from being the only country that likes to gloss over the excesses of the cops at the anti-globalisation protests, but I'm sure this is hardly news to you.

A few years back, a similar scenario actually happened in LA when two dudes with full body kevlar suits and armed with Ak-47s robbed a bank and fought it out with the LAPD for hours and shot like 15 cops. Their (the cops') puny handguns didn't even phase the bankrobbers who were each shot like 70 times.

IIRC, the police at one station are told that they're going to be laid off because of the lack of crime in their district. So they go make some crime.

Police officer Benny is obsessed with American police cliches and livens up his own boring everyday life with dreams of duels with bad guys. But poor Benny and his colleagues doesn't have much to do in the small town of Högboträsk. Most of their days are spent drinking coffee, eating sausage waffles and chasing down stray cows. Peace and quiet is the dream of every politician, but for the Swedish authorities, the lack of crooks is reason to close the local police station. When the cops investigate a suspected act of vandalism, they realise that they themselves may be able to raise the crime statistics high enough to stay in business.

How many Yanks have seen a movie where not a single word of English is spoken(except the Passion of the Christ) and where you must rely on subtitles, unless you know the language.

For example Ondskan(the Evil) was approached by several Hollywood studios for an American version. The makers said that they prefered the Americans to watch the original movie.

I am not bashing Yanks. Germans, Frenchmen, Italians, and Spaniards all translate movies. I have seen American westerns in German and Tommy Lee Jones with a spanish voice. It is terrible. Americans seem to think so to, so they just make their own version of the movie.

I believe watching a movie in another language with subtitles(preferably without them though) is one of the best ways to learn a language(short of going to the country where it is spoken) I think this is a reason why Scandinavians and Dutch are some of the best English speakers outside of Englishspeaking countries. Besides, with the deteriorating reading skills of students they could use the practice! I have been watching subtitled American movies for years. Plus I kinda like German TV-shows, unfortunately we haven't seen as much as the proponents of EU promised!

I don't think that was the point... It's a fact that the Americans re-make alot of films for the american market and that the result is always horrible. A recent example is that awful shite called "The Ring", the Americans managed to make it even worse (something I'd have thought was impossible).

GodDAMMIT. I really hate stereotypes. I guess you think all 'yanks' are just inbred illiterate hicks who would rather watch nascar than watch a subtitled movie. Well, thats mostly true... but thats besides the point. I happen to enjoy foreign cinema so much that I bought a region free DVD player. And I actually prefer subtitles in movies that arent in English because I absolutely detest dubs. So before you go off with your little preconcieved notions about other people you have no clue about just dont say anything at all.

Well, it certainly sounds like you're bashing us. And more than likely the remade verion would suck horribly. (The Ring and The Grudge were terrible compared to Ju-On and Ringu)

It's on an icelandic website (.is) , but the language in the movie is swedish.

Here in the US, I don't know who is doing translations, but they are incomplete at best, and misinterpret idiomatic expressions.

I have a tape of Le Weekend which is badly translated in the subtitles (roughly 1 out of 3 spoken phrases is not even translated at all). I find this typical.

Even if I watch France 2 (which they re-broadcast here in the US), the translations miss part of the content - some of it is definitely not translated.

This occurs most often during interviews - it's as though someone didn't want the viewer to really know what questions and answers were transpiring.
