The Most POWERFUL (non-mod) Poster!

Which poster makes the most valid points? The poster who makes a thread you JUST HAVE to post on. The one who has a reputation for being very "influential". Who? Damn it, who?

I think Niccolo Medici. His posts are always extremely intelligent. He doesn't post often, so you get a feeling he only posts if something is very important. And his posts have an air of authority about them that makes you think that he's right and there's no point in disagreeing, because you're obviously wrong.

hmm. well the most powerful poster or the poster who makes a thread you just have to post one, doesnt necessarily have to be someone who makes the most valid points or is the best debater. There are a lot of people who I love to post with because they are hilarious and witty. To me thats very powerful. The ability to make someone laugh is just as important as the ability to make someone think about whatever it is youre saying. Having said that......the list is loooooooooooooong. Lots of funny people here. And btw.....just because someone on here is very funny and likes to joke about a lot....does not mean that they are any less intelligent than the posters who are serious knowledgeable debaters.

I purposly avoid all debates, not because I'll get annihalated, but because on here they seem a pointless waste of letters.

That said, I am the most powerful poster.

I don't think there's any one most powerful poster, but people who contribute in different areas. Here's my big-list.

Lunatic Goofballs: Damned hilarious... but then you read something that you think came from the keyboard of one of the primo debaters, and it's made by LG. You gotta respect someone who can be so insane one second, then arguing with the best of them the next.

Nicollo Medici: First point, the name. Whenever I think of "The Prince", this is who I always remember the author as before I remember his last name was machiavelli. Second point, the sheer skill that Nicollo displays in the debate is something that actually makes you think. I'd love to see him play devils advocate supporting something that is drastically unpopular just to see what he could do with the subject.

Cogitation: Now I know this is a mod, so disqualified by default, but I feel his non-mod posts are concise, helpful, and amusing when they attempt to be. And he doesn't seem to be the person to ever lose their temper in an argument, even disregarding the fact that he's a mod and so technically not allowed to.

Keruvalia: I make a point to read his posts because they often offer a different perspective to a debate, or an angle that I had not considered, as well as being intelligent enough to back it up. Can't argue with that, really. Well you can, but it's a turn of phrase.

Eutrusca: A wealth of experience and a willingness to share it. Not nasty, or spiteful to anyone on these boards that I'm aware, and funny as hell when he wants to be. and he tries to put on the facade of the "dirty old man. Gotta respect that.

Niccolo Medici

If I see his name on any thead I just have to go and see what he's written.

edit: Not the right one. I don't have a need to post anything after him. Usually there's nothing left to say.

If I allowed myself to name everyone who I admire, I'm going to still miss people off the list, so I'll be further unfair to several of those I would have named and state instead my 'maybe-ish' top three in alphabetical order (because I'm already being unfair), to wit:
Bottle

Back in the day (and I mean way way back) we had a fellow here named Annelida (I think- again, it's been a long time. I could be confusing names) who was widely conscidered one of the wisest forum goers. He was a serious guy, always backed up his arguments, and never lost his cool to trolls. I think just about everyone here respected him. Sad too, because when the mods tightened some of the rules he decided to leave the forums. That was probably well over a year ago.

Nicollo Medici: First point, the name. Whenever I think of "The Prince", this is who I always remember the author as before I remember his last name was machiavelli. I'd love to see him play devils advocate supporting something that is drastically unpopular just to see what he could do with the subject.

I have to admit that creating a work like "The Prince", "The Art of War" or "The Discourses" or at least contributing to discourse on the same level as these giants would be a ambition worthy of my life's dedication. I would do well to focus all my waking moments to refining my arguments and theories into a brief, concise, and powerful argument.

...As it is, I'll settle for posting on NS occasionally. I'd post more, but I'm lazy. ;)

I probably shouldn't have looked on this thread, my ego needs no further stoking, but thank you for the kind words. I HAVE in fact tried debating on issues counter to my own beliefs; with some limited success in doing so. For example, I have argued both sides of the gun control issue, picking whichever side seems weaker in a given thread.

I find arguing from both sides can expand one's views, to help one understand the human aspect of both sides. My beliefs on such issues as Abortion were a lot more rigid before coming to NS, I've seen many people credit NS for helping them re-evaluate their stances on issues.

My problem when taking sides in opposition to my own continues to be an over-emphasis on passionate appeals...so often rational debate seems impossible on sensitive issues. I am tempted to use emotional pleas instead of concentrating on facts when I have less-than-perfect knowledge of how to counter an argument.

Well written emotional appeals can soften the hearts of those in a debate, and change the dynamic of the discussion, but they hurt one's ability to be a detached authority in a subject. I have to remind myself to use them sparingly, only when the subject is too close to my heart...That or when I'm lazy; I can't always be bothered to find that old magazine article, website, or journal article that backs up my assertions.

I miss having some of the old posters here who would be kind enough to take my statements and provide the back-up data for my conclusions. Usually I've read them before and that's where I got the info from, but I don't really like spending my time footnoting my every word.

I'm lazy like that, which is why I am credited of using what little "air of authority" I have to keep dissent at bay. I should mention I COULD back it up, but I'm lazy (see a pattern here?). Some posters have called me out on occasion, and I thank them for that ('cause it makes me a better debater, less LAZY), so I've been forced to hit the bookcases around my computer for support.

As for my realitively infrequent posting habits; would you believe I'm busy? ...No? How about lazy? ...Yeah? Good. I'm getting through to you.

I'll say this though; Reasoned debate, rational policy creation, and education in the various idealologies and subjects found here are my primary concerns on NS. From these I can refine my own theories and beliefs, and use them for my own purposes. I've found NS very useful, and the people here very helpful, insightful and for the most part very friendly.

Oh, as for the most powerful? Too many powerful voices to mention...That and my usual way of trolling around NS is to look for good subject titles, not so much who made them. I see so many one-post wonders come in and lay down an amazing argument that I constantly remind myself that the world is vast; there are worthy people everywhere. The only powerful ones I remember usually are the powerfully repellant trolls I avoid.

Difficult to choose one person who is the 'most' powerful on NS, but I'd be tempted to lean towards Bottle.

There are many others who are instant reasons to check a thread though: Peechland, UpwardThrust, Personal Responsibilit, Keruvalia, Dempublicents(1)... etc. And, many others that I also respect - even if I don't instantly throw my eyes at a thread with their name(s) on it.
