One thing People, one word can describe the problem.

Intolerance.
Islamic Terrorists/Extremists, Christian Extremists, Communists, Homophobes, Racists and Nazis, etc.

that is not to say we should let them kill, maim and rape, but that is the problem.

Iraq is a perfect example. Saddam Hussein ran a brutally oppressive regime that killed, abducted, raped, tortured the citizens in his own country for decades. Bush II invades saying "Screw this, it's time to sort them out properly', then other intolerants come in as an excuse to kill americans. Meanwhile, the apologisers are carrying on in the background and the U.N. is trying to hide the fact that members took money for looking the other way during the embargoes.

I disagree with Bush II on a whole heap of his policies, but the Iraqi and Afghanistan invasions at least have a reasonable cause and effect. It has replaced the Taliban with democracy for Afghanistan, and things are looking promising in Iraq due to the desparaion the etemists are going to to disrupt.
You can tell how sucessfill you are by how many people try to bring you down. If you are doing bad, no-one will bother.

Laziness. An innate resistance to effort. Those who are too lazy to search, think and understand are thusly confronted by things that they don't try to understand. They become afraid of what they don't understand, and even of the effort of understanding, because it opposes their belief system, and so they percieve it as a threat. This percieved threat elicits aggression, which is rationalised with hatred.

Loving and supporting someone requires energy. Pushing beyond a threshhold of tiredness to read your child a bedtime story is an act of love. Staying back to help a colleague after your shift is an act of love. Those small acts say more than any words can, because they are an active manifestation of your love for another person.

Disregarding the impulse to make these efforts is what is wrong with the world.

Okay, I've thought about it some more. For the number two spot, I'd say it's pretty much a toss-up between bureaucracy and ultra-sloooowwww websites.

Extremeist groups in Congress. When Goldwater said the Republicans were too conservative, then something's really wrong. Can't it be like 1976 again? I hear that was the best year in American history. I mean ya had Bicentennial, lax drug laws, 18 drinking age, and no one watched the news. It was all about minding your own damned buisness, which Congress needs to do. We don't need a new law every day.
